My point being that to say "we've now moved beyond the other 13/14 teams that make up the numbers" seems premature and tempting of fate.

Well that's utterly ridiculous! The laughing stock continues... They've done Pulis, they've done Allardyce, now they're going down.

Can you imagine bringing in a young progressive manager wanting to play silky passing football; then after 4 games decide that Roy Hodgson was really the man you wanted to hire?

    From Football365 Winners :

    Marco Silva
This column mentions Paul Merson’s comments on Marco Silva quite regularly, but there’s a reason for that. It is not through blind loyalty to Silva – although he has started superbly at Watford – but because of what comments like Merson’s represent. They are scathing not just against an individual but an entire swathe of managers because of their nationality. “What is this geezer?” was the standout line. Not even “who”, but “what”.

I could have stomached Merson and Thompson’s Sky Sports rant when the Portuguese was appointed at Hull City had there been no repeat. Yet having watched Silva improve Hull City despite taking over after the abject reign of Mike Phelan, Merson went in again. So, for the last time, a retort:

“They will get relegated. To have a manager who has enhanced their reputation by being relegated is remarkable. He had the chance to bring in players and didn’t achieve what he was brought in for.”

They also took more points than Stoke, Watford, Burnley, West Brom, Middlesbrough and Sunderland since he took over. And the players he brought in improved Hull.

“The problem is Watford will go to grounds and get dominated.”

Two away games played. Two wins. Four goals scored. No goals conceded.

“I read that they might not give Troy Deeney the captaincy and for me he’s kept the club together. If they left him out they’d really struggle and I don’t think they’ve bought well.”

Deeney is yet to start a league game. Watford have taken eight points from four games.

“I don’t think they’ve bought very well when they needed to strengthen so their weaknesses are exactly the same as last season. They’ve not really bought anybody with Premier League experience, and that’s why I worry about them.”

Initial evidence would suggest that, as with Silva, Premier League experience isn’t necessary to hit the ground running. Although they did buy Nathaniel Chalobah, Tom Cleverley and Andre Gray.

The most surprising aspect of Watford’s start to this season is not their goalscoring (seven in four matches), but their defensive solidity. A team that conceded 68 times last season (only one side who survived relegation conceded more) has not had its defence breached since the 57th minute of their opening match. Watford looked haphazard and incoherent in defence against Liverpool; the change is remarkable.

It’s hardly a question of mere good fortune, either. Tottenham are the only Premier League team to have allowed fewer shots on target than Watford. I picked them as this season’s potential entertainers after the 3-3 draw with Liverpool but, since then, Silva’s side have allowed only five shots on target in three matches. That includes playing for three-quarters of the match against Brighton with ten men.

Silva is not a man to launch tirades against his critics; quiet progress is more his thing. Yet his initial achievements merit being shouted from the rooftops, if only to drown out those who rejected him on the grounds of everything but his CV. Despite managing Hull and Watford, two supposed strugglers, the exhaustive list of managers with more Premier league points than Silva in 2017 is as follows: Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp, Ronald Koeman, Paul Clement.

In theory it's ridiculous to sack a manager after 4 games, but in reality they are just correcting their initial massive error of appointing a manager that has no chance of implementing his system into a team that is totally unsuited to it. After a couple of seasons and a few more transfer windows it might have worked, but it would be too late by then this season.

I think it's very harsh to sack him.

Yesterday they should have won. They created enough clear cut chances but blew it. That's not De Boer's fault. I actually think they were beginning to mold into the team and style De Boer wanted. It would only have been a matter of time before it all started to click and they started winning.

Now their players will have to completely change styles, training regime and philosophy under Hodgson. All that plus with their next 4 games in the Prem being Southampton, Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea, I can see them still being on 0 points after 8 games.

Hodgson is a horrendous appointment for them. Not that I care because that's one less team to worry about, but he hasn't been in club football for at least 5 years.

Their players seem unhappy with the decision as well so I'm sure their will be a bit of player revolt behind the scenes. I can see Sakho and Zaha looking for moves away come January.

Palace have to one of the favorites to go down now.

The beauty of all this though is going to be Merson and Tommo going on about what a great appointment it is because he is English and a top manager.

If this was a British manager the press would be saying he'd be stabbed in the back/not given enough time.

Hodgson tends to be a defensive safety first type of manager - will the likes of Townsend and Zaha enjoy that?

Call him a "young progressive manager" if you wish, but he had zero track record of success, or even really successfully implementing good football, in his previous jobs... he's trading off his reputation as a player.

His facial expression has changed now. Good news for us because this win means the dildo brothers will keep him.

Also good that this derails Huddersfield's momentum from the positive start they had, especially conceding two sloppy goals.

The new pretenders luck runs out, makes our 4th place official and clearly too good for this thread. I suggest that if this carries on you'll soon have to move it to General football and rename it Plebs United.

Only us and the two Manc clubs remain unbeaten. Only four games in but it still feels impressive. Our high commitment game with impressive performances across the team denies the opposition chances. Not getting too carried away but it is a characteristic of the top sides. Let's enjoy the moment and see what we can do against Citee, officially the most expensive team in the World. I think we have narrowed the quality gap to some degree this summer despite their massive spending. for example, Richarlison and Jesus are from the new Brazilian generation. A great first test, which should give us plenty to debate next week.

Sorry for my lack of updates on here, moved on friday and no internet at home. Anyway it's very nice reading below

    Prem 2 table 12 09 17.PNG

Burnley and Stoke are looking good seeing as they have played 3 of their 4 matches against Prem 1 sides. On the flip side it must be a worry for the Saints having played none as of yet.

    Hodgson confirmed for Palace then.

I give him until Christmas before he is fired.

I originally had Brighton finishing 20th this season, I'm now changing that to Palace.

I personally think he has been out of club football for too long and the game has changed a lot since he was managing a club. His last management position in club football was at West Brom before taking the England job at the end of 11/12 season. That's five years ago and the pace of the Prem has rapidly increased in that time.

His first 4 games in charge are against Southampton, Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea. On paper the only realistic chance they have of getting points is against Southampton. Football is a funny game of course and anything can happen, but I would expect Palace to be on no more than 3 points after 8 games.

Personally I don't think Hodgson will take them forward and judging by a lot of their fans, they don't either. He has his work cut out and I would be very surprised if Palace now stay up.

Erm .... they had 29 shots at Burnley and missed a couple of sitters. Woy or no Woy, if Palace go down then I'm a Dutchcunt.
