    Nosworthy - Holding Midfielder ?

Well im writing this to see what people think...

Tuesday night we were battered in midfield i thought. We never had a player that could break up play, we seemed to be sorely missing Eustace. We also seem to be have an abundance of CBs. So heres my plan/thought. If Zola is given angella aswell, to play taylor and angella at cb and move nosworthy into the 'makalele' type role to break up the play and then give short balls to either abdi or murray (thus stopping him from having to do cruyff turns on the edge of the box, or playing 60 yard passes thinking that he is koeman when he hasnt the ability. THis would enable abdi and the ball players to receive the balls in better positions and we would be less over run in midfield.

Before anyody laughs this off the forum, nosworthy was interviewed in Tuesday night programme and stated that he used to play this role at Gillingham... admittedly Gillingham are a world apart from where we want to be. But its just a thought. The formation could sit something like this.

    1. almunia

    2. Cassetti 5. Taylor 6. Angella 3. Pudil

    4. Eustace 8. Nosworthy

    7. Anya 10. Abdi 11. Murray

    9. Beleck/Vydra/Geijo

The above away from home giving the option of taking out of the holding midielders at home and playhing an extra striker.

Please be kind to me this is my first thing iv done like this.

    Interesting idea.

I thought we were playing with 3 central defenders and 2 wingbacks. Listening to commentary and analysis we certainly seemed to miss Eustace. If Nos is capable why not?

I know when he does the coif turn it makes us all pause in worry, but it pretty much works everytime, I like it! Interesting point though, but I don't think people would like seeing Hogg on the bench

i think cassetti would be better in that role.. english players dont have the same skill level as the italians and casseti being a defnder can win the ball and most likely pass it to a wfc player. only my opiniom like.

I had wondered if cassetti had been bought to play in midfield. With Angela hopefully signing could see the three at back with pudil on left to support. I'd love neuton but I can't see it now.

Jesus wept. Nosworthy in midfield? Pffffft.

No, Hogg is an excellent holding midfielder, as is Eustace and we're very blessed in that department. Why play someone that isn't very comfortable on the ball in a position where he'd receive the ball more than most players!? He'd be our playmaker. Laughable really.

Could see Doyley in that role. Sort of like a quarterback role, like Pirlo against England. Sitting deep and pinging passes to the forward men.

Spot on, the guy has center half written all over him. Why are we so certain Casetti and the other potential new guy will be any better? Sure Casetti has international caps but he's 35 now and might not be up to it over here, i'd be more than happy to keep Nos and Taylor as our CB pairing this season.

We all know Nosworthy's main strengths are his wonderful technical ability and incredible vision, finding pockets of space between the lines, drifting inside, gliding with the ball, twisting and turning with unrivaled agility, his low centre of gravity flummoxing defenders, so I'd play him LAM, in the same sort of role Nasri plays for City.

For that very reason..he might be good but probably won't play every game.

Be to tired or unfit to play 3 games in a week.

As for Nos...let him do what he does best.

I'd rather he defended well but made a mess of his passing.

i do completely agree that we need 2 holding midfielders in the formation we are playing. Should be Hogg/Eustace, when eustace is injured then we do appear light on numbers for that position so maybe Nos isnt the worst idea to fill in. Against Ipswich we used Hogg, with Yeates and Abdi more advanced and i thought we were completely overrun in midfield. We lost the battle there completely.

I'd prefer him on the wing ...

Crossing the T's etc etc ;)

We were overrun in midfield because the formation didn't work. We had 3 in their against Ipswich's 4. 4-3-3 is supposed to be easy to switch to 4-5-1 and give a numerical advantage in midfield, but Murray didn't seem to understand his new role and Vydra didn't really drop back much. He looks like more of a second striker than a winger. If we'd had a top quality centre forward to hold the ball up it might have worked, but with the players we had available, 4-3-3 was the wrong choice.

    Very under rated player.

100% agree. Very useful player and gives his all.
Actually believe a combination of Nosworthy, Hall, and Ekstraand would be a striker's nightmare.

Him and Doyley had a couple of iffy moments on the ball as expected but they do seem very controlled.

the experience of nosworthy, hall and doyley will be essential in the run in. add in ekstrand who has been very solid since he got into the team, hoban who keeps improving and neuton, and you can see we are absolutely spoilt for quality at centre back.

of course, and i agree with you. i think he is far more suited to playing wing back, but he is not necessarily a bad sixth choice centre back to have on the books :)

  34. Not convinced Doyley or Nos will be first choice prem but they are very comfortable at this level

Solid defender but please can he cut out the Cruyff turns on the edge of the box it ruins my nerves. With him and Doyley in the same defense you do worry there may be an almighty **** up when they are on the ball but they have been great since coming into the team.
