    I agree. I think footballers are some of the least energetic athletes that people pay to watch. I contrast them with professional road cyclists. During a stage race (eg The Tour de France) cyclists need to consume 5000 calories or more a day to fuel their athletic efforts. That tells you how hard they are working.

    Wasn’t it Souness saying recently that in his day they never complained about the amount of games, the more games the better because it meant less training. They had tiny squads back then and less subs, so they’d regularly play 60+ games a season, for pretty much the entire 90 minutes, on awful pitches, being sent up in the air by bone crunching tackles left right and centre, and yet apparently they never got fatigued or tired by it all.

    I think physically our players shouldn’t have any problem dealing with the schedule or the play style, even with our small squad, but mentally it’s now far too easy for them to check out if they don’t fancy it, or don’t like the manager, or just don’t want to be here.
