Yes...hopefully that's all it is...but we seem to be heavily stacked with good centre halves for a Champ club. Shittu, DeMerit, Carlisle, Jackson and also Doyley and Mariappa can play there too. Do we really need that many? No other position is that well served....but thinking back Aidy does seem to sign centre halves first...and probably sees that as the most key position on the field.
Boothroyd has said he's there as cover for Jay when he goes away on international duty. We could easily lose Shittu to the african cup of nations in January so getting in cover now is a good move rather than having to get someone in come January. He'll bring experience to the squad much like Powell did and no doubt it will benefit players such as Avinel and the younger players.
Wigan fans generally seem to think slightly better of him than Palace fans think of McAnuff: http://boards.rivals.net/default.asp?sid=945&p=16&style=2&forumId=3408&action=1&replytoid=529141956 A few comments from their official messageboard: "yeah, i reckon hutchings thought that jackson would jump at the chance of a new contract,so released de zeeuw, which looks a mistake now, we could have done with keeping one of them at least,if only for their influence in the dressing room and their experience!" "Well I guess it free's up contract money; but I really don't think it was smart. My Mom has a great term, don't put all your eggs in one basket and I'm fearful Chris has done that." "I'm getting very worried, Granny hasn't signed has he? And Jacko has gone to Watford. We have to sign some people fast, I hate seeing so many people leave, and I flick onto SkySportsNews every ten minutes, looking at that yellow bar, hoping it will say Wigan Sign... But it's always Wigan Release... "
Quite a lot of positives said about him. Model pro being used a few times. It's an Alec mkII in terms of influence in the dressing room etc.
Charlton fans said a lot of good things about Chris Powell but he didnt turn out to be as good a signing as we hoped. That said i think Jackson will do a good job for us in the Championship
I remember Jackson getting caught out against Spurs a few times a few weeks ago, leading to goals for Robbie Keane, so pace is certainly not as asset but he does bring that experience. As Jay and Shittu will be away on international duty, I am not too worried about this apart from the fact it is for two years, not one (if we go up, do we release him as surely he won;t cut the mustard then?). Seeing as many fans regard Jay as being a good Championship player but not good enough for the Prem, I would have liked a Christian Dailly type player more, someone who could still cut it in the Prem.
Ah touche. I have that alot, its not interesting unless its a photo shoot day where we have models in
just got in and saw this cant fault it a experianced head as malkay will be playing less focusing more on coaching cant do any harm as long as it doesnt spark shittus move out
Jackson a bit to old for my liking. shittu is like a rock if he goes it will be a big loss. anyone remember plymouth game he threw himself at everything, no fear.
The thing I didn't realise is that Jackson was at Naaaarch with Malky and Aidy. So they know him and must know what he's about - and feel he has something to offer.
Yup, took a photo as i saw him arriving at Vicarage road today with Chris Powell who is a close friend of his.
official site says he's number 4 but so is malky am i right in guessing that malky will never olay for us again (except for testemonial maybe)
That'd be PTV transferring his file straight from the Wigan site, where I'm guessing he was number 4. And of course no one knows the squad number yet. They're not even bloomin' annouced til August...
What the hell!? Another stone-old defender, and on a two year contract? Just as I was thinking that our squad for next season was going to be free of dead wood.
