He's a really unassuming guy, and has clearly gone through it a bit mentally. He's a really thoughtful person, and some of the stuff that's yet to be printed is really interesting - but it's just too long to put into one piece. I'll update this thread with links in the coming weeks when I publish the rest. Thanks to everyone who has read it so far.
A very good interview and he sounds like a decent guy. When he was playing for us, I always thought he was talented, but also a bit lazy and so I was never a great fan of his. But hearing about the pressure he was under at such a young age, I sincerely wish him the best.
Surprised that the Marvin Sordell Foundation wasn't mentioned. I always felt that after the Bolton move didn't work out he spent all his time concentrating on human rights and trafficking issues rather than trying to get back on track, on the pitch. Absolutely nothing wrong with that of course, it should be admired that a young man is willing to focus on that rather than *****ing their money on cars and hookers. But surprised it wasn't brought up.
Sordell was always a good lad, just mentally a little too weak for top level football He was messed around by Bassini who needed to sell a player in the last hour of the January transfer window in order to keep the club afloat until the summer.
Any thoughts of you taking over the mantle of the "WFC Legends" with a format of longer, more in-depth interviews?
I am looking to interview a few ex players and some things are in the works, so in a way... We spoke about this at length, but it didn't fit into this Watford Observer piece. There'll be plenty more in the coming couple of weeks. Again, thank you for your positivity around the article.
"Football-wise, Watford is home. Harrow is home too. Colchester isn’t really a home yet. But then Manchester is my home too. And Watford is also my home.” At the interview, 352, was he carrying several bunches of housekeys?
Part one of the series on my blog is now online: http://polymaas.com/2015/11/03/marvin-sordell-ups-and-downs/ It does talk about the move to Bolton, but sets up some of the subject matter of parts two and three. Parts two and three will follow very soon.
You should name the parts like the Harry Potter books. Marvin Sordell and The Bankrupt Dentist Marvin Sordell and The Ten Sets Of Housekeys Marvin Sordell and The Unsurprising Fall From Grace
Met Marv in the Corporate hospitality after his man of the match in the Huddersfield game a few days before the move happened. Really nice young lad but perhaps a little naive. He was sure he wasn't going anywhere despite the rumours but clearly Bankrupt Bas has other ideas. Wonder what would have happened if he'd stayed put into the Pozzo era? We will never know of course but all the best to him and hope he can climb the ladder again, providing he doesn't end up scoring against us!
He's convinced that he wouldn't have stayed on. I asked him the exact same question, and he quite rightly raised the fact that Mariappa ended up going before Bassini left as well, and even Sean Murray was being touted around apparently. As far as Marvin is concerned, looking back on it, the way the club was at that time meant that the biggest assets were going to be sold before Bassini left no matter what, so if it wasn't in January for him it'd have been in the summer. With all that potential, and in the right environment, things could have been so different for Sordell. I honestly think that if he stayed on with us and we did end up being bought out in the same way etc etc, he'd have been a big part of the last few years. How circumstance can drastically change someone's life eh?
Nice interview, looking forward to the rest. Nice boobs on the other half too, if that is your other half on the front page, she has a Velma from Scooby-Doo vibe about her, fair play fella, fair play. Was the picture taken in the Chilterns?
I'll let her know of your compliment..! It's in the Yorkshire Dales. Glad you're enjoying the interview series so far.
Not disagreeing but I think Mariappa left post pozzo. Zola wanted him go stay I thought but he only had a year left on contract
You could be right about that. I never questioned him really because I assumed he was right I guess - but now you mention it that does ring a bell.
Here's part two of the three-part series with Marvin Sordell: http://polymaas.com/2015/11/05/marvin-sordell-away-from-home/ He talks about moving home, family, and the mental repercussions of a nomadic lifestyle.
Really good piece. Just a thought, if you want to get a wider audience for your work, why not see if Adrian Durham will re-tweet a link to this article? He's an egomaniac so the fact that he's mentioned in it means he might well do it! He's got about 250k followers so if he does you should get a fair few hits...
