Marco Silva Tapping Up Complaint

We lost at home to a s*** Stoke team (I think it was their only away win) at the end of October. The goal came from defending a corner. Everyone marked their zones, all Stoke did was ping it to a man who wasn't in one of the zones and he scored, they shut up shop for the remaining hour and Silva didn't know what to do.

I thought we were very fortunate to win that game to be quite honest. I genuinely think we were the worst team in the league around that time last season and if Cleverley hadn't missed a 96th minute (or whatever it was) penalty, you'd probably come away saying it was a good performance - we had been battered until we got back into the game with the goal from Niasse, and I seem to remember Richarlison missed more or less an open goal in the first half

In fact, I was asked to write a piece for The Liverpool Echo in the week after the game, so you can see my initial reaction to it, saved for posterity if you like...

Point taken, but you wouldn't expect someone to change their approach totally, which is what I was getting at

Anyway, if you'd sat through 6 months of Sam Allardyce, I'm not sure you'd have quite so much of a problem with it!

Don’t forget the Huddersfield game, losing 4-1 at home to a team that hadn’t scored an away goal in about 10 games.

Or Swansea who were bottom of the league.

But that’s typical of his time with us, either playing well but inexplicably throwing the game away, or giving away early goals and having to claw our way back into games. Both are a concern.

Yes, teams started to learn that they could sit back and do nothing for 80 minutes and then in the last 10 they could apply a bit of pressure and we’d crumble.

880 posts on this thread! Never a better time to use the phrase "we need to move on". Doesn't really bother me how he does there. My only real feelings on this issue is that he is not worth wasting any time or thoughts on (apart form this post!). If we get a few bob in compensation, so be it. If not, it will not break us. The ultimate conclusion is that there is little integrity in professional sport, but we all knew that anyway.

We go again in August, no doubt we will have a season of many twists and turns and hopefully steer clear of the bottom three places all season, that will do for me!

I think the only way Silva will succeed is if Everton spend a fortune and sign some very good players. I get the feeling Silva could operate at a level where the players very good, much better than his opponent's. It sounds quite obvious, but some coaches cannot handle top players, like Moyes. Some coaches are only good at making a silk purse from a pig's ear. I think Silva is the former only.

If you give Silva limited resources, or a squad where he has to squeezed every last drop out, such as Dyche at Burnley, then Silva will be found wanting. Give him a squad full of top players, then I think he could deal with that.

It gives us something to discuss during the close season, I would expect most posts on this subject to die down once we are underway.
Also of course he has newly signed for Everton, so right now it is bound to be a fairly hot topic.

Well, we will spend a fair bit of money, but this will be balanced out by a lot of players leaving - our squad is huge

Could easily see the following leaving - Robles, Martina, Williams, Funes Mori, Besic, Schneiderlin, McCarthy, Mirallas, Bolasie, Rooney, Sandro and Niasse - none of whom we would miss hugely, but our wage bill is massive, so we won't be making huge moves without some/most of these players being sold first. Rooney appears to be the first one with a move lined up - may be gone by early next week.

Williams has been a bit of a disaster for you. Looked a good player at Swansea and a good signing but has looked a complete liability whenever I've seen him for you guys !

That sums it up quite well

You could add Michael Keane to that category as well, but can't see us selling him this summer

Personally I'm glad this is over. Not bothered if we get anything out of it but Everton shouldn't be allowed to do this and get away with it scot free, (but then again nor should anyone). Looking forward to seeing Silva showing off his ridiculous watch on TV after matches and being glad he's not our manager when he does.

Good luck toffeeblue9 next season. You'd better hope he doesn't start out too well or he'll be after the vacant Arsenal job by Christmas.

Another rubbish report from the Wobby saying we are yet to receive any compensation. Seems to be based on zero facts or an equally rubbish report in the Liverpool Echo. I still maintain everything has been settled behind the scenes and we won't hear anything else for a long time. It's not in the interests of the clubs, Silva the snake or the EPL for this to rumble on.

So you are having a pop at the paper for having no facts, yet have convinced yourself you know what’s happened based on no facts? Bit confusing!

I have to agree. The coverage since WD Sport's demise has been dreadful. WO have nosedived as a paper with any real insight. They regurgitate stories from the web. They have no contact with club sources anymore, which is a shame.

    I agree.

    Size of ego is key.

A low key manager (eg Moyes) will be trampled by big ego players once they smell weakness.

Ssssilva will be fine on this.

The only thing bigger than his ego is his watch.

    RK's diagnosis seems highly plausible.

Pozzo, as we know from previous examples, is extremely discreet in his dealings, the more so with legal matters.

    Expect no willy waving.

My opinion only agreed like most on this foum but it is based on the past behaviour of EPL I.e. to brush everything uncomfortable under the carpet. Also very strange that most of the media has been silent on the background to Silva's appointment. To give an example the Mirror had a full page article this morning but did not mention Watford once. Of course we will all have to wait for further details.

I fully agree with you and HB1. I fear he’ll do quite well at Everton as he'll have better players available. When he had a fully fit squad with is things were rosy. When we got injuries he couldn’t and didn’t want to adapt. Despite our injuries we should’ve been beating Swansea/Palace/Stoke/Huddersfield.. or at the very least not losing to all of them!

There was the article floating about that said he was a classic cheque book manager, his solution to any problems was always to ask for new players. When we had all our injuries it was almost as if he was deliberately persisting with a doomed strategy to prove a point, rather than actually trying to win games that were winnable, injuries or no injuries.

I'm just waiting for him to persuade EFC to pay 20 mill for Slimani and then play him on the wing with Tosun up top. It'll be like a blue Burnley!

So under MS we had 4 pretty terrible results then. How many balance that out? Arsenal, Southampton and Muff (at a push). On balance not exactly a great record with us is it?

  32. when everything as going well he came across as a genius, when going badly he came across as a total moron

I think its quite hard to predict what will happen, its a risk for Everton there are more well known proven managers they could have chosen

For such a MASSIVE club it's strange they've opted for such a small manager and had to break the rules in the process.

With the money they are paying Silva they could've opted for a more experienced manager.
