Is Tommy Smith that bad ??

In fairness, I think Tommy was one of the few to earn some credit in the Prem. OK, he missed some chances (Arseanal away) but he was consistently "OK" IMO.

When you say crap, do you mean compared to the rest of the team, or only by Premiership standards?

If the latter, then you could have said that about two thirds of our team last season!

And when you say "From what I heard" I'm not having a dig but do you mean you didn't attend many games so you're relying on other people's opinions?

I didnt attend any games last season because i was travelling. And when i say crap, i mean in terms of the Prem, and yes, that goes for the rest of them too. This season he has been superb, but that is because this is his level.

Nak - You have my permission to fish this thread out once again when Tommy is a world beater in the Prem next season and serve me some humble pie.

Tommy Smith should not to be at Watford Football Club...end of.

    Why not?

At least he seems to care about the club and does his best for most games unlike certain other players we have.

Know we did actually win against Leciester when Smith was injured but I feel he is probably one of the most important people to our team and more effective than most attacking wise whilst helping the right back defend.

I do think some are a bit bitter just because he said the truth that Sunderland are a bigger club and he has come back to become our most consistent performer at this level anyway.

What did Tommy actually say? I've never actually heard what it was that turned some people against him.

    Another Great Horn!

Well plenty of us disagree - unless you mean he should be at Man U.:]]

Even old jobr thought the world of him.

    Mama Mia!

There can be no higher praise for Tom (always suspected that jobr was a fair minded Horn at heart).

Arguably Aidy`s best value for money signing so far this season - perhaps he can win over some more doubters by making or scoring a couple of goals at Plymouth.

In the Championship he's an excellent player, and on his day one of the best players in this division, probably the best winger!

However in the Premiership he'll get sussed out as he hasn't got the pace to play in that position, IMO. He's quite a clever player though, and may possibly be better off playing just behind the striker if we go up?

My opinion has changed relating to his work ethic and determination because under Luca he was a big time charlie and thought he was too good for the club...hence why he spat his dummy out when the in-form Chopra replaced him for the semi-final against Saints when Loosington was in charge!

Fair play to him though, he's turned my opinion of him around, and I hope he keeps doing it.

Definitely my Player of the Season. Most of our players will probably get sussed out if we get back to the Premiership.

I don't think you need pace to play on the wing or anywhere else. It helps of course, but just look at Aaron Lennon. He is as fast as **** but ask him to cross, shoot, control the ball or pretty much to anything other than run and he may as well be back home picking his nose.

And I know they aren't wingers, but just look at people like Scholes and Giggs. They can chug about at 3 miles an hour on their arthritic legs and still potter down to the penalty box and score a goal or 20.

Smith can shield the ball like nobody else I have seen, and if he can do that when we get promoted there will be no problems. His crossing is still streets ahead of anyone else's in the squad.

Of we won't know until we are up there again.

    Are you joking or what?

Lennon is one of the best wingers in the country! His pace is obviously his main attribute, but there is nothing wrong with his crossing, control or technique!

Giggs is still very quick...not as quick as he was 10 years ago obviously, but he's still rapid!

Pace is one of the strongest attributes you need in the Premiership - Fact.

That not fact Bubble - it's a ridiculous statement. Pace without skill and technique is nothing. Look at Kabba!

Pace is very good to have but as a stand-alone feature it's worth ***all.

Haha nope I am deadly serious. In fact I am shocked that you think that!

He has no end product at all! So many times he just punts the ball down the line and runs after it, mostly going out of play and sometimes managing to aimlessly spoon it into-or-around the box. IMHO I think he is one of the most over rated players there has ever been, but maybe I'm wrong. I haven't seen Spurs at all this year so maybe he has improved.

But we digress from the main point of the thread.

You are very right that pace is one of the main attributes that makes quality Premiership players, but I also think that if you can make up for it with better ball control, shielding etc then it is no worse.

I suppose it all comes down to the individual player though. Whether Smithy's trademark punt-past-the-defender-and-run-on-to-the-byline would work in the Prem is questionable, but he is also pretty good at cutting inside and creating opportunities.

The Premiership game is played at a faster pace generally though so perhaps it would be more a question of keeping up with play rather than what he can do when he on the ball.

    You utter ***!

If you actually bother to READ what I said, I said that pace is ONE OF the strongest attributes you need to do it in the Prem! Not THE strongest!

It's not up for debate IMO, it simply wouldn't work, didn't work last season!

I agree on your other points though r.e. Smith being good at shielding the ball and creating space/chances for team-mates etc.

I think when Ainsworth sorts out his tracking back/defensive side of his game I think he'll be first choice right midfield next season, regardless of which division we're in.

    That's just my opinion though.

Personally I'd like to see Smith play more central in the Premiership!

Whoever still holds a grudge against Smith is a fool. Not only did it happen 5 years ago but also what he said wasn't bad in the slightest! I seem to remember him saying he wanted to move to a bigger club? (maybe wrong) which was true! Sunderland were/are a much bigger club than us, most of our players would have gone there. Anyway I don't think he would have left if he wasn't left out of the semi-final against Southampton. He was mightly pissed off.

Anyway, back to the present, he is been our best player by a mile this season. FACT.

I said it before, I think Smithy was one of our better players in the top flight. He's not Lennon, but then he's not McCartney either, which is good.

And because one needs to learn from the past. Some people are far too hasty to make judgements about players. Tommy Smith is a good example of one who, after a patchy start and given time, has settled in and become a huge asset to the club. There are others who may now need to be given time, having had difficult starts to their time at WFC.

Not that will play for Watford there's not. Smithy is the one area of the team that is sorted. It's the other 10 positions which have question marks.

    Sad but true.

I still find it depressing having to say that Tommy Smith is our best player though.
