Is Tommy Smith that bad ??

Is it just me ? because this bloke has been absolutely pants since he came back. One goal against Arsenal ok not bad but for the rest of the time he contributes nothing.

My Derby mate was wetting himself when they offloaded him back to us and I can see why. The first time he was here he was really inconsistent and couldnt finish. Nows he's back still no end product and not even providing goals for anyone else. Fell over the ball at Villa and nearly cost us a goal. Ray Lewington even dropped him for the FA Cup semi a few years back.

I can't see him lasting next year, we should have got Carlos Edwards or kept Chris Eagles.

When he came back i reserved judgement but time is now up.

Towards the end Eagles was worse if that's possible.

 

Derby seem to be doing all right!

Actually I'm not one of the anti -Smith brigade. He works hard, he gets crosses in, he's scored more goals than our CF, he tracks back much better than he used to.

 

Eagles would have done well this years because on his day he was a very creative midfielder also with a eye for a goal

 

Agreed, he may not be the quickest but he has a good turn of pace that gets him to the byline and his crosses are of a pretty decent standard most of the time.

 

I always liked smith when he was with us before, but i have to agree he is not what he was.... but i think next season will be a differnt story... i think he is another that is not a prem quality player but defenitely one for the chumpionship

 

Too right! I was one saying we should sign him for the Premiership, mainly because he gets more time on the ball and won't get kicked about every week like he did against some of the cloggers in the fizzy coke league!

Would have been a quality signing for the Premiership!

Noddy is just plain crap! He slates us as a club when he leaves then says he's glad to be back

He isn't brilliant, but he does an ok job, one of our better players in fact.

However, I wish Aidy would play him on the left, as I think he will score more goals from there. He cuts in from the left and scores with his right, a bit like Henry does on many occasions, though Tommy maybe doesn't do it quite as well . He played on the left for Derby and he won their player of the year title twice, whilst playing in that position.

 

At least while we play Smith we have a chance of playing the ball on the ground.

 

Tommy Smith shouldnt even be at the club...never mind even starting.

He's on a secondment to the real world but is still very much part of the moderation team and will be back hopefully in the not too distant future.

 

I must admit that a year ago I didn't think a great deal of Tommy either. The improvement has been remarkable, so hands up, I'm a big fan of his now.

 

I was pleased when we signed him back, he's done very well for us. Our most consistent player this season IMO.

Crikey, a tread from back then criticising Smith and I did not contribute anything to slagging him off! Bring this back in a year's time when we are struggling in the premiership and I am sure the views on him and a few others might be a bit similar to those at the start of this thread. Even Kabba looks a decent player in the championship

I am glad that this thread does not embarrass me, and Tommy Smith has been fantastic this season.

 

Get a life Nak, as if you fished through old threads to bring this crap up. Why dont you search for all the brown nose Marlon King threads and ask, "what do you think of him now then."

Opinions change like anything else. From what I heard, Tommy was crap last season and will probably be crap next season if/when we go up.

A decent Championship winger, but nothing more.

 

i used to hate him. this season i think hes been ok for us.

 

hes very consistant and usually a top performer. but he sometimes gets very predictable, which is going to the buline and hanging it up at the back post. but hes still one of our better players. hes also cut out his dribbling out of play. keep it up tommy!

That predictability is what makes him able to surprise defenders when cutting in like he did for O'Toole's goal at Charlton. Tommy has been fantastic - our best and most consistent performer by a country mile.

 

funny how things can change relatively quickly. Remember the abuse we laid on him for being seen in the red lion having a laugh after we'd lost at home to sheffield united? not a good word in defence from anyone. Now I, like everyone else, recognise him as probably our most consistent player and probably player of the season.

 

I thought even after the first couple of months in the prem he was decent.

Definately / Easily one of the best players in this league.

Even though he is not super quick, he still has good acceleration. Plus he doesnt rely on pace as he is good at jinxing with the ball.

Plus considering he has had to put up with Doyley behind him with his ***** passing most of the time.
