He was forced to watch us play and from the absolute start he looked shocked by us and changed his tune.
Better an idiot who can change his mind than a more stubborn man. Fair play. The ability to adapt is a sign of intelligence

If have preferred it if he had, tbh. Him praising us makes me uneasy and makes me second guess my own optimism at how we've started the season,

I don't usually rush to watch these links but felt that I would to see what you guys are posting about.

Id like to to add. To your observations:

Arabhat is how he prounounces Armrabats name.

He says we have players who can do 'somethink' the ball

He is a clown and just needs some white makeup on his cheeks, a red nose and a big red wig.
Unfortunately these idiots are so straight faced when they speak that they come across as knowledgeable.

He's actually more accurate than most to be fair but he got it very wrong with Watford.

I actually quite like to hear what Merson says on football matters, but he just doesn't like Watford. He usually runs the club down. Even in his Sky summing up on Saturday after the match, he was being extremely patronising saying it was a perfect away performance, for a team like Watford. He basically will say something nice then throw a little dig in.

He kept saying in every match report that he thought Watford would go down, but then did concede he got in horribly wrong after the match. Before the game he was still being dismissive even though we scored 3 good goals against Liverpool. He just said something like, yes they scored 3 goals against Liverpool, but they'll still go down. He thought Bournemouth would beat us easily 3-1.

I'm glad the team are making a mug of him. He's like all the pundits I hear. They only know stuff about a top 6 club. If you ask them anything about a team outside of this, they know as much as a wet brick, yet they are constantly given air time, and asked for their view, as if it is some sort of expert opinion.

I'd rather hear the opinion of real football people that have a good knowledge and balanced view. They are in short supply though.

When Silva did well at Hull, he was hailed as doing a great job. But when he got the Watford job, he seemed to be devalued. He suddenly became a manager who was lucky to still be managing in the Premier League after being relegated. It was a case of why would he go to Watford, then it became why would Watford want him.

Gray going to Watford was referred to as "£18,5m for Gray....really!!". Like we are mugs signing him.

Players like Cleverley, Chalobah and Hughes have all been rubbished by Merson.

It just seems when Watford do something, the instant first reaction is it must be bad. The general attitude towards Watford is poor, but if we progress as I suspect we will this season, there will be a lot of U-turns along the way.

Silva makes football365 winners of the week, with reference to Merson

“No, they [Watford] will get relegated,” was Paul Merson’s forthright view when doubling down on Marco Silva. “To have a manager who has enhanced their reputation by being relegated is remarkable. He had the chance to bring in players and didn’t achieve what he was brought in for.”

Having attacked Silva’s appointment at Hull, Merson wasn’t about to stop now. There was no appreciation that Hull actually ranked 14th in a Premier League table of matches since Silva’s appointment, with more points than Stoke, West Brom, Watford, Burnley, Middlesbrough and Sunderland. Hull’s mistake was not in appointing Silva, but not appointing him earlier..."

Hornetboy sums this media attitude up perfectly. I can't believe the bias recently. It's almost as bad as it was in the 80s. Watford are portrayed in such poor light.
It must really irk them when we do well. They really do not like reporting anything positive about us, when they do it's always a back handed compliment.

The main-stream commentators get their information from an ever-decreasing knowledge base populated by people who only ever talk about a small number of top teams and their players. They never mix outside of this group of and have no knowledge of lesser (fewer?) teams and can offer no opinions of their own with respect to this. The outcome of this that they spout the same tried and tested sound bites to fill the airtime.

This can be applied to any group of people who only mix within their own.

Unfortunately this is the only information that the general public receive about Watford so they take it as gospel.
Over the last 10 days how many non-Watford fans have TOLD you 'that Brazilian kid you got looks blindin', wos his name? Richard Lidsun or something?, yeah he looks a right 'andful'. This is just because he's been mentioned by the press as the reason that we have started the season we'll. In reality our entire team is well motivated, well instructed and they have performed well but this isn't mentioned because the media haven't been told.

I guess that this post illustrates why I find talking football dull and why I can't be bothered to correct people's preconceived opinions about my team. I never talk football in the real world but here is different, you're all Hornets!

In truth the casual football "fan" is not interested in any teams outside the top 6.

I'm not sure if the media cause this or if their obsession with the top teams is just reflecting what their audience want.

The most annoying media coverage of the EPL in my view is the CBBC's MOTD kickabout. My son watches it and they never cover lower teams unless they are playing a top 6 team. It just gives the impression that the league is those 6 plus their opponents. No wonder youngsters end up being drawn to those "big" teams.

I see your point but there is this little thing popularly known as the internet, if I were a pundit expected to write a piece on each premier league club for the first week of August then I'd start reading up on each club and making notes at least a month ahead when the transfer window opens. Twenty years ago this approach would have been far harder.

Against all my better judgement have talk sport in the background. What a complete load of *****. Why the fixation with certain players? Why headlines about has-been jack wheelchair being sent off in U23 game. If it's not Wilshire it's kane, Barclay, sterling, Rooney, Defoe. Another is charlie Austin, laughable mention should get england call up after penalty at weekend. Punditry generally at an all time low.

Alan Brazil is shockingly uneducated in any sport outside of Horse Racing. Actually think they will get rid of him soon. They did spend one of the drive time hours last night discussing the Arter cheating. Gough found it funny but understood it should have been punished. Adrian Durham does a great line in indignation and was very much in the throw the book at him camp. Thought it was pathetic. Also agreed with a very eloquent Watford caller (anyone on here?.. eloquent, us? Lol) who pointed out the "plucky Bournemouth" media coverage. Replied that he was getting bored with the ruffling Bournemouth's hair like coverage as if they are just naughty little scamps.

This guy is a mental ******. Now it says that watford does not descend from division after a game ... This type is based on a game to say such thing and walked a series of time saying that they were going down ...

Guys, Marco Silva if they are given good conditions, I speak of a good squad clear, will make a great season ... He in weak clubs like Estoril had a record at home thunderous ... Then in Sporting, which is the 3rd Club here from Portugal, won the cup and broke all records in Greece ... Hull had a very very weak team, could not do much better ... Merson showed a great lack of knowledge about Marco's career when he came to England. Anyway, he's an idiot.

    Quite likely Miguel!
Unfortunately being an elite athlete does not guarantee any intellect or even common sense. As a colleague once said 'the trouble with common sense is that it's not very common!'
I had a team mate who was once ranked no.4 in the world and she was convinced we had spent a week in Cambridge for a county competition when we had been in Oxford!
I nearly persuaded her that her father was from Trinidad and Tobasco and that the hot sauce was named Tobago. Nearly but not quite.
It's usual that elite athletes sacrifice their schooling to concentrate on their sport. When they enter another sphere they can be found wanting.
