Suarez is the replacement for Deeney.

In my humble opinion some people are coming at this transfer completely wrongly.

We want more goals in the squad but explode with angst when we bring in an experienced Championship scorer.

We cry out for a clearing out of the alleged bad influences in the dressing room and a reduction in player power but then object to the addition of somebody who is said to have a good attitude.

We moan that all our proposed dealings so far seem to be from Udinese but are now unhappy that we are signing somebody we actually know something about.

Sometimes a horses for courses approach is needed.

    Uff.

Quick look at the Brighton forum and they seem surprised he's leaving and several comments about losing an experienced head in the dressing room (particularly as Duffy is also going). We need a blend of youth and experience and at least he's definitely got the latter!

I could definitely see him leaving Brighton being a bit of a blow to them with all that experience. That said, I get the point about bringing in an old head to help the squad and all that, but how effective will it be if he's being brought in from outside and he won't be playing that much?)

I am surprised by this one, but to be fair Murray has never been a player with pace, so age is less of an issue here.

Until about post #40 I thought this was the best, most fantastic whoosh on the forum ever and was I proud to be playing my part. Shocked to find out we really are signing him....

Unusual but might actually turn out to be very shrewd. Time will tell.

But, but it’s a worldwide scouting network. Obviously they went for someone they didn’t have to fly to sign.

I know nothing about Perica - But I can safely say they're different players. Perica I presume arrives in a car, and doesn't own a wheelchair.

Nothing against Murray, but I don't see how he fits in and legs must be knackered.

I think Deeney has been getting too much stick about his speed so they have been thinking how to make him look quicker.

Now a solution - 36 year old who is even slower.

    sorted

  17. My first thought was what muppet made this up
My second thought nah can’t be real
My third thought was perhaps he’s a plan C from the bench when sides come to the Vic and park the bus, and does that mean Deeney is off?

This (and indeed most of your post) is spot on. A lot of people saying “why get rid of Deeney to bring in Murray” etc and I think in some ways that’s understandable. Of course, it overlooks the fact that Murray represents a significantly cheaper option than keeping Deeney and the fact that Murray should be more comfortable as a backup option to Suarez than Deeney. As our captain and a true club legend, it will be very hard for any player to become Deeney’s successor while he is still at the club and retaining such influence over the dressing room. Deeney’s departure (facilitated by Murray’s arrival) allows Suarez to become our main striker yet with Murray and Gray we have alternatives that are proven at this level.

This is very weird, because he turns 37 later this month and we already have Gray, Deeney, Perica and Suarez as central strikers as it stands (Welbeck too of course, but he'll be off imminently), alongside the option of Pedro to play as the striker he actually is.

It's not weird because he's always seemed pretty intelligent and measured in his media appearances, he has experience of the Championship and promotion, and although his legs are clearly gone in a pace sense, it will be a great novelty to watch a centre forward at the Vic who actually knows how to play as one, with all the associated 'movement' that entails.

It seems a bit odd to bring both Perica and him in together, and I really ******* hope this is not a harbinger for Suarez, if it is for anyone. This did not seem like a good idea to me on first inspection, but I can now see a certain logic behind it, although it's very dependent on quite a few factors and how they develop over the next few weeks/months.

It's not an exciting signing, that's for sure.

"Murray returns to grand slam action" - Then realised it was the tennis.

Fairly sure he hasn't been signed as a Vydra-type striker, making runs off the shoulder or starting counter-attacks. He's a poacher and a hold-up man. This is like moaning at Deulofeu for not winning headers.

Even Gray will probably be ahead of Murray.

Just be an option if we need to go long.

I presume Suarez is staying of course!

I’m normally pretty positive but I don’t see how this can be justified primarily because of the opportunity cost.

There have been so many discussions on this forum of late about the club finances and whether to go all out for promotion with the general consensus being the need to balance our fiscal strategy whilst maintaining a promotion challenge. So given this why on earth would we want to spend wages on a 36 year old? He was crap last season he not likely to get better with age and this is exactly the same reason we need to offload Deeney. I’d rather spend the money on Capoues wages and have a youngster as back up then spend money on Murray’s wages regardless of whether we are paying are 100% or whatever.

    it’s a financially incomprehensible decision.

    Suarez. Gray. Perica. Murray.

    4 strikers.

4 different types of player. 4 different options.

    Enough for 46 matches.

Enough to get us through the inevitable injuries over the season. Enough if God forbid we get hit by COVID at the club. Enough to get us through those tough weeks of winter when we play twice a week, sometimes more over Christmas.

I think it's becoming clear that Deeney is on his way. This loan signing confirms it for me. Reluctantly Welbeck will be off also, so we're we'll not be too blessed up front with good reliable strikers.

Expectation is high over Suarez, and rightly so, but you cannot have all your eggs in one basket. You need alternatives, and not Gray and Success......but someone the opposition might be a little wary of.

So assuming Deeney and Welbeck are going, we'll be left with Suarez, Percia, Murray & Gray with the wildcard of Penaranda. Hopefully we can also add Hernandez to the mix in January.

Not sure that Fessi will sign now though, unless they see him as an advanced midfielder, playing a role Quina will play. This is what they could be thinking as his best position. I don't really see a place for Success and obviously Sinclair in all this.

Not only is it financially illogical it does not make any sense from a playing perspective. At 36 is he is really going to have the energy and drive to put his **** on the line for our promotion challenge? He’s got nothing to prove and will sadly get worse with age. By contrast we could have got an up and come youngster on loan with lots to prove and probably on less wages.

I have to say the Gray/Perica/Murray part of that equation doesn't exactly scream promotion at me.

My main worry is this means Suarez gets sold and we are left with the dream combo of Deeney/Gray/Perica/Murray.

I'm not loving the idea of this transfer, but i'm guessing he's being signed to play the same role as Matthew Connelly did. Add's experience, knowledge of the league, will be happy with a bit-part role and a good player to have in the dressing room.

Perfectly happy with all of that, although it still baffles me how any Prem team's recruitment department are looking at Deeney and thinking 'yep, he'd be a good piece of business'.

Of course we need alternative to Suarez but not a 36 year old Glen Murray. We could have found other alternatives and dire as it sounds I’d actually prefer Success and Gray to Murray

Actually have always liked him as a player. Should provide some veteran leadership in the changing room. Won’t play every game but adds depth.

Surest sign yet that Deeney is off though.
