'For the first time in eight years I have been treated like a proper man': Troy Deeney

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. He was full of praise for Silva when he let him have time off when he did a bit of punditry a couple of years ago. He spoke of Gracia and Flores very highly too.

Saying something like that implies the other coaches were terrible to him, but what's he's really trying to get across is that he really rates Pearson. I knew the two would get on well as they are both cut from the same cloth.

Troy has had praise for every 'gaffer' he's ever worked under at the Vic. But this time it has a particular 'ring of truth' to it.

We could appoint Hitler and Deeney would be full of praise within weeks.

Ruthless in the box. Troy could learn a thing or two about clinical finishing.

I would imagine that there will be several of his ex-coaches looking at this article in disbelief.

The fact is, despite the odd few games every season Troy does little to justify his position in the team yet seems to be given a place in the team whenever he isn't injured. Anybody that plays up front will get the odd goal in open play, but overall his "striking" ability is poor for the Prem and his overall contribution (in most games he plays in) is woefully lacking.

Over the past 6 years, I think he has rarely been in tip-top condition, but has been overweight and sluggish, yet has raked in his £75k per week

Then, when he opens his mouth in the media, apart from the odd "honest" statement that a shallow media grab hold of, he generally talks like a child with petulant upmanship, winds up the opposition, often providing them with the motivation they need. Then, scuffs a goal at the weekend, scores a penalty, and comes out shouting his mouth off again moaning at everyone and anyone.

He can't handle his drink, he blames loutish public behaviour (whilst in his mid 20's) on his father 's illness.

I suspect that if he played for anyone other than Watford, 99% of the posters on here wouldn't give him the time of day, including me.

Could do a job. However only had lower league experience in Germany in the Third Reich.

  12. What does being treated like a man actually mean anyway?
Was superb on his European tour tbf, invaluable experience if we got into the Europa Cup

Well the pundits seem to love him for being "honest".

Opponents fans a bit mixed - probably depends on who has wound up!

Certainly the Wolves fans don't but that might help us as he seems to be more motivated when wanting to prove a point against someone.

Quite agree if we had any decent alternatives of his type Deeney probably wouldn't be first choice but we don't for now unless Success turns up.

I agree he does seem to wind people up and much like the club twitter page itself sometimes seems to slap him/us right in the face!

Mind you where would we be without many of his goals - probably not in the Premier league at all!

I think that's a pretty harsh assessment. During two of those six years, he was still one of the Championship's top scorers, and was probably our best and most reliable player in the second half of 2015/16, without whom our form would've have been even worse and we wouldn't have avoided relegation so comfortably.

Admittedly over the last three seasons his contribution and justification for being in the team has been questionable, but he's been at the club longer than any player, been involved in a wider variety of match situations at WFC than any other player, so if nothing else he's still useful in providing leadership and a calming influence when our more hot-headed players are in danger of losing it, which is vital if we are to avoid relegation.

Also, I think you are selling his performance vs Villa somewhat short - he was an important part of our attack even when we were down to ten men, got into good scoring positions, won the penalty and provided a vital key pass for the third. And, have I missed something - when did he come out shouting his mouth off after that game and what exactly did he say?

He just said tough on Villa - we had a game to win when they complained we didn't kick that ball out as their player was injured.

Or maybe just wanted an English coach as suggested in the Athletic articles?

Ofcouse he is just trying to please the current manager and be in their good books!

Annoyed to see our captain using such violently gendered language here. As we all know, gender is a social construct and the idea of being treated like a "man" is literally violence against those who see such binary restrictions as contrary to their own evolving and self-defined identity.

I’d say I was capable of a very decent impression of Nige at one point but now all I can hear in my head is Bob’s awful (but funny) take on him which is basically just Brian Clough.
