Interesting that some people in F1 think that Red Bull are cheating with Vettel's car. As Vettel is significantly faster in corners they suspect some form of traction control.

I don't quite believe they'd get away with that but I do believe Red Bull have something that is giving him the edge

Webber doesn't get the luck does he!

Easy win for Vettel likely again...

Fed up with it to be honest. 9 times out of 10, any reliability issues fall on Mark's car. Not Seb's.

As much as i'll miss MW being in F1, the benefit is that i'll have absolutely no affinity to Red Bull.

Seb wins his 4th consecutive world championship, and Red Bull collect the constructors for 2013.

Vettel is just awesome - probably the best driver that has ever lived. He will make all records tumble in the coming years, and we'll be so privileged to be able to watch this happen.

Re the Mark's car breaks and Vettels doesn't, this may be down to driving style. It's highly unlikely Red Bull would waste millions on not giving Mark the best car they can, especially if he is out of the championship picture as this would risk the team championship, something they rank as more important than the driver's championship due to the money it brings in.

The same thing happened with Mansell years ago. He was well known as the fastest driver because it literally wrung the neck of the car, but ended up breaking them. Looking at his records he has a high proportion of DNFs and if championships were awarded on race wins he would have recieved at least 2 more.

That being aid the last race was the first one I didn;t watch and to be honest I didn't miss it. I'm quickly losing interest in F1.

    Afraid I started to lose interest in F1 when Murray Walker retired. He was the the only person that could make an empty bit of tarmac sound interesting;

    "...aaaaaand look at thaaaat GAP!"

Well, you had to be there.

If you've not done so, read his autobigraphy, it's very good. Try and pick up one that is not signed, it'll be worth more in the future as it's rarer, he seems to have signed the majority.

No surprises in the land of Texas. Magnussen to replace Perez at McLaren, Massa going to Williams. Bottas was incredibly quick while Maldonado just was not trying as he leaves Williams. The sole interest for me will be to see if Bottas can claim a podium. Unlikely in race trim perhaps but fingers crossed. Williams F1 desperately need a revival which seems to have been cut short after some of last season's heroics.

Dario Franchitti on the advice of his medical team has retired following his crash at Houston in June which left him with multiple injuries and he was fortunate having seen other similar accidents not to be killed.

Well done to Bottas. Other than that nothing more than the usual recent processional for Vettel.

I really hope that they have a crap car next year. Brundle did seem to hint that things may be a bit different next year. It could turn out similar to the last big change when Button in the Braun won the first 5 out of 6 due to having the best car, and clinched the title due to the fact it took the others time to play catch up. Massa in the Williams could be interesting.

Gutted about Dario, this was actually the first I'd heard about his retirement, although I had my suspicions after that crash! A real shame though, he's a great driver. I really need to stop having favourite IndyCar drivers... If something happens to Scott Dixon I'll know I'm cursed!

  18. eerrr....no

That honour belongs to Jimmy Clark, from the era when drivers actually made the difference not the car. F1, rally, touring car, Indy car, le mans, nascar.... the guy was a master of them all.

Adrian Newey is the real genius behind Red Bull success, Vettel is a very good driver lucky enough to have found himself is a Newey car year after year

    Newey hit factory: FW14, FW14B, FW15C, FW16, FW18, FW19, MP4-13, MP4-20, RB6, RB7, RB8, RB9.....

Vettel is no way the best driver ever. Now if he was to move to a lesser team like Ferrari this season and still walk it, I would perhaps give him more recognition.

If you look back to his earlier career, he wasn't actually that great. Di Resta outperformed him (in F3 I think it was) when they were teammates and he took some time to learn in F1 at first with Torra Rossa (when he ended up performing outstandingly). He is possibly the hardest working driver ever in terms of fitness, preparation with tires, testing, etc but he is aided by a good physical size in comparison to others (a modern day essential) but he lacks the skill of someone like Senna who could drive a tank to pole, especially in the wet.

Fingers crossed. Last season was quite interesting even up to it's end. The tyre change after much agitation from Red Bull with Pirelli turned the last half of the season into a borefest.

I wonder how long it has been since the driver has been the principal factor behind the success of a car. The role he does have has become to a degree diminished by all the technical aids that have arrived and some have indeed gone.

What you can say about Vettel is that he is better than Webber but what applies to him could also equally apply to someone like Damon Hill. However we will never definitively say who is better than whom until they all race in identical cars as in the smaller formulas.

Speaking of which one often sees that those who don't do so well in these still manage to climb their way up thanks to the money they can attract. It has been like this much of the time with privateers and rich individuals like the ill fated Piers Courage but it does seem more pervasive than before.

And the other discriminatory factor that of sheer size. With weight limits being cut for next year the biggers drivers like Hulkenberg akin to a race jockey may well have to take a year out doing other motorsport.

There is on board footage of Jim Clark and Juan Manuel Fangio and when you look at the road surface, the kerbing or lack of it, the suspension they had their car control is astounding.

That in itself won't be a bad thing. I love the wet races far more than the ones in the dry. So long as it isn't a washout which means the race is abandoned.

The only thing that can make it better is putting Kobayashi in a good car so he can cause some proper mayhem

Doesn't look like he is going to get a drive this year either

Good to see Mercedes get 2nd place, hopefully next season with the changes, it may throw up a more interesting spectacle, and hopefully see the re-emergence of the likes of McLaren. Very boring season, totally dominated by 1 team. Adrian Newey - well played once again sir.

Sorry to see MW go. But great way for him to finish his F1 career on the podium. Probably one of the more unlucky drivers not winning the WDC in his time though he probably deserved to. I'll certainly be following his post-F1 career with interest. All the best to him.

    Mark Webber - 215* Declared.

How was it the most boring? We've got to see a top class driver/team blow away all rivals. Would you rather Red Bull weren't quite so good just to make the races more 'exciting'? By that logic, the 1970's Brazil side completely ruined international football...

  31. UEA_Hornet

Yes please. Though it would help to clear things up in my eyes of Adrian Newey went to work for the FIA and designed one standard car. Make it about the drivers again as at the moment it's not.

So you'd want to go back to the glorious days of early 2000 when there was no single constructor that dominated? Oh hang on - Ferrari won six in a row.
Ok, let's go back to the 90's - Oops, Williams Renault did pretty much the same.
How about the 80's? Hmmm, Williams and McClaren won six on the bounce with Honda engines.
Ok then, back to the 70's. Oh dear, Ford engines were rather good weren't they? Won seven in a row!
Perhaps we need to go back to the 50's and 60's - or maybe we could just have F1 based loosely on Wacky Races. Vettel could play Dastardly.

His argument was to make one standard car so you can't make the comparisions you just have (as each team had a different car)

Obviously everyone driving the same car will never happen, but thats what he meant

  34. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

Yeah, I know it'll never happen but at the moment it's dull because Vettel has a vastly superior car and the input from Red Bull to keep it that way.

  35. molly

But that's always been the case - over the course of a season, a driver is only as good as the car he's given to drive. And it doesn't stop there - the speed of a pit stop can dramatically effect the course of the race. The skill of the driver is just one (albeit crucial) part of a team effort. Either accept this reality or go watch another sport, because it isn't going to ever change. I'm not sure I'd want it to either.
