There are plenty of intelligent Americans not just as many as there used to be. They are trying to teach creationism in some schools and we all remember the landmark Scopes Monkey trial. SATs scores have plunged and the country relies on brain influx from abroad. The amount of drivel in the mass media from radio to television and popular music tells one all you need to know. It turns up here and rots the mind. And then you see the number of idiots in high office and where they have come from. Britain is not to far behind. Dumb and dumber.

  2. Shocking. Bodies piled high for cremation, its like scenes from a medieval plague. Its unforgivable for any country to be so unprepared for covid after the lessons of the last 16 months.

Maybe, but you do have to factor in the huge size and density of their population. I'm surprised it hasn't happened before now.

It's good news but not as good news as I'd have expected. Only a 38-49% reduction in transmission rate. Presume the end of the case for Covid passports aftre one jab on the basis that the holder could still have mild/no sympton covid and still has a 62-51% chance of passing it on, but the key will be the %s after 2 jabs ?

It’s still huge if you consider the impact on the R number. Even if you are only 40% less likely to pass it on, given the spread is exponential, it will make a huge impact to the spread of the virus.

Assuming that having had a jab doesn't affect in any way the behaviour of the individual.
I suspect once jabbed, and therefore less-fearful, individuals will be far less careful about their behaviour.

Same. India seemed an accident waiting to happen: huge population densely packed, and a significant percentage of the population very poor and uneducated. It's a recipe for disaster, and I am only surprised that it didn't happen midway through last year.

"Those given a first dose of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines - and who became infected three weeks later..."

So it's OF those who got infected they were learly half as likely to transmit it.

If you are also 75% less likely to be infected you're 8 times less likely to become infected and pass it on.

I see elections are going ahead in West Bengal as cases in India continue to rise, 279k new cases yesterday, 17k of which in the state of West Bengal. Utter madness that they can't be postponed for 6 months.

My mother-in-law in Peru will get her first jab on Tuesday much to the relief of my wife. I plane load of Pfizer and AZ arrived yesterday, Peru had ordered 20m of Pfizer and 12m AZ, their population is about 30m. I guess the AZ vaccine will be used in the remote areas in the Amazon and the Andes as it can be stored at fridge temperatures, and Pfizer used in the cities.

Human stupidity knows no bounds. Aside from the religious festivals the opposition party which is now Congress have asked people in states it controls not to take the government vaccine. Other parties have claimed the government are trying to control people and in some cases large numbers of vaccines have been destroyed due to the Congress Party refusing to authorize their use. It really is playing politics to the extreme and is really pathetic and also rather sad.

You cannot blame the Indian government either entirely as they have been constantly advocating people wear masks, practice social distancing and the like for months even when cases were relatively low but many in the herd are dumb or dumber. This complacency is all too apparent in many disasters time and time again. The fact electioneering and using the crisis to score points is yet again a stain on politics which really is a human cesspit the world over.

Those who are extorting people over oxygen supplies really are the lowest of the low. It's sad to see how many of these types infest the population the world over. One has to feel so much sympathy for the medical teams. They too along with public health clinicians have stressed the need for caution in recent months and been ignored and now they are once again bearing the brunt as with their colleagues all over the world.

Given India has 20 times our population, wouldn’t their deal toll need to reach 2.5 million to be a worse outcome than us?

It will become endemic in every country, so will probably never be totally eradicated. Periodic more severe flare-ups will occur dependent upon numerous specifics.

It probably will Jumbo. Lots of deaths are unrecorded and once the virus hits rural areas with minimal medical facilities well.... A policeman was murdered as well trying to make some scumbag wear a mask. Several bus drivers and other officers have met the same end across the world.

These scum were gathered in London last week wearing their tinfoil hats and having the temerity to wear stars of David as they see themselves somehow as victims of some global genocide. These thickos have no grasp of history or reality and it is concerning they have the right to vote as they obviously lack any grey matter.

And Bojo. If what he said is true then what a winker he is. Having been saved by the NHS he was willing to throw it under a bus ? Follow the science you wiff waffing idiot not your stupid dogma. We don't need more winkers like Steve Baker and Mike Harper and their wonderful minds who advocated the Christmas knees up and landed the country into another lockdown.

My Daughter was at the Liverpool music thing last night with 5000 others and also at the other test event on Friday, and tested negative today. The light is definitely getting closer.

    Very jealous.
I'm getting older and it was getting rarer and more boring to go on bigger nights out like that but in a few months I can't wait to push past a sweaty crowd, pay £5 for a tiny bottle of Becks, queue for the toilet, get beer/piss all over my shoes and repeat for 3 hours.

I’m just missing the chance to sit in a restaurant and moan about the fact that we could get 5 bottles of the same wine from Sainsbury’s for less than the restaurant price. Mrs TuT is missing that too.

I thing I’ll miss (if it goes) is table service at bars/pubs. Sure it’s nice to stand in a bar and chat with your mates, but being in my late thirties now, I think I just much prefer sitting down and having drinks ferried to you, as opposed to trying to get served at a bar 3/4 deep, then trying to get all your drinks back without spilling them.

I'm with you on this. Spoons were already doing it long before covid. Now that other pubs have invested in apps to order and pay at the table I'm hoping that they'll all keep going with it.

I’m not sure that this matters as long as the vaccines do their job. The fact that 14 members of a care home caught it and all recovered suggests that they are.

I’m quite the opposite. I find having to sit and use table service isn’t for me, I prefer to be stood up at the bar.

Ha! No I’m not one of those. In my local there is a corner of the bar that works well for sitting at and being out of the way.

The IMHE (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation) just shifted their reporting to be based on a model that estimates actual COVID-19 related deaths, rather than self-reported deaths.

As you might expect, this revises the death totals up significantly for a number of countries (seen mostly keenly in the obviously underreporting ones, like Russia).

    http://www.healthdata.org/special-a...covid-19-and-scalars-reported-covid-19-deaths

Their estimates place total Covid related deaths at approximately 7 million worldwide, about double the reported deaths on Worldometers.

The US breaks 900k on the IMHE's model, while UK deaths are up approximately 33% (150k -> 210k). India's reported deaths triple, and Russia's estimated deaths multiply to about 6 times higher.
