Phil Bardsley has signed a new contract for them just in time for his easiest game of the season, marking Roberto Pereyra as he shuffles around aimlessly, studiously try to avoid getting injured before his inevitable summer move.
Dyche confirms- Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Robbie Brady will all miss Burnley’s meeting with Watford tomorrow. That has to be good news for us. If we can't win this match, after they had a battering in City on Monday, only a couple of day's rest, no fans in the ground giving the away team a distinct advantage, and most of their best players missing, then I really despair as to where any victories will come from.
Big old game, this. Norwich have gone, Brighton have come back far better than expected. Two relegation places left and four teams in the mix. There will be a lot of draws between now and the end of the season. A win tomorrow or Sunday, or both, would be a major leap for us.
Jeff Hendrick, as expected, is leaving Burnley, but less expected is that apparently Roma and AC Milan are in for him?! https://www.balls.ie/football/jeff-hendricks-time-at-burnley-is-over-438181
With those 4 out, plus Dyche saying Hendrick and Lennon have played their last games for Burnley, we really have no excuses not to win. We have to be careful though. Burnley will set up ultra defensive, defend deep, and try to nick it 1-0 from a set piece. I can literally see them spending all game trying to win fk’s and corners, so their CB’s can get in our box. While at the other end, kicking Sarr to pieces. Massive game and a must win.
The lack of depth at Burnley is alarming. They have been heavily reliant on fitness under Dyche, but are now two injuries away from having no first-team substitutes.
As a club they've dealt with bannergate very well. Dyche is also a really good bloke on the most recent Peter Crouch podcast which was a bit of a surprise. Is this the first time Vydra will have started against us since he left? Had Quique still been in charge, I'd have expected him to score and then run over to reveal a vest with pictures of Oulare, Diamanti and Ibarbo on with a slogan saying "Really...?"
Three. Bardsley has signed a new contract. I suppose that's the penalty of buying quaility not quantity. If your squad is 23 and 9 of them are unavailable, you're going to be short on the bench. It's the club's own choice - we could easily have four or five extra in the squad but pay lower wages all round - but they prefer the higher wage, lower numbers approach.
Yep, and last time you were in a pickle Dwight McNeil was handed an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands. We obviously have the opposite approach and buy six average right backs and no centre backs. 3 players are out for the season, we have 9 subs and many are still not in the squad. Would definitely trade 6 or 7 of our extras for one Tarkowski.
What do you mean? They had 7 on the bench the other day, with three of them being fairly senior pros, four 'youngsters', and Bardsley seemingly on his way back for the rest of the season
And I'd imagine you pay lower wages than even a club like ours as it is, so it'd be very difficult to buy more players and put them on lower wages if you want to compete at this level
Exactly that. One of the 3 is a sub keeper so doesn't really count. Fair enough Bardsley back is so 4.... So if there's a couple more injuries which is likely at the moment.... sorry I'm not sure what needs explaining!
Be ragin' if I were Quina, good player, would be licking his lips at the chance to get games in a situation like this, yet finds himself, what, 6th choice centre mid? All this when we're properly creaking at the back...
Surprisingly, not. Our total wages in year end 2019 were £87, yours £83m. Our squad only cost about half the amount in transfer fees, though. I didn't realise until I looked at your accounts just now how (relatively!!!) cautious you are with salaries. I suppose signing on fees could be included in costs of signing a player, which might distort the comparison?
Racism is bad. A lot is stacked in our favour for this game which only serves to make me more apprehensive. A bad result will be difficult to take. The heat should in theory favour our players but I’m really not sure football works like that so it probably won’t. Pereyra’s standards have slipped, but I struggle to see a viable replacement sadly. I won’t write off Pussetto yet but he’s looked poor when I’ve seen him. Welbeck won’t be fit enough. So Pereyra the lesser of 3 evils. If nothing else he probably frightens the opposition more than the others. Prediction Burnley 1-0 Watford Cathcart (og 3); Deeney (missed pen 90+1, 90+5)
The 7 subs on Monday were: Long - centre half - long standing reserve player but never first choice. Pieters - left back - reserve player. Dunne - centre half - lower league loan experience. Peacock-Farrell - goalkeeper Jensen - no relation to Brian - goalkeeper Bobby Thomas - never heard of him, literally, so I don't know what he does Max Thompson - youth team forward. Wih Bardsley coming back as well - right back - you can see where the shortage lies! We are minus Brady, Hendrick, Gudmondsson, Lennon - midfield, and Wood, Barnes up front. Tactical substitutions of tiring forwards aren't really an option!
That's 54 90th minute penalties Deeney has missed this season. If he misses another one I think someone else should have a go.
Thank you very much for that info! I like to think that I've heard of every player but that Burnley bench stumped me.
The only thing about Pereyra that would strike fear into the opposition is the same threat he's using against Pearson to keep him starting, no matter what kind of performance he gives; whatever that actually is. After this, we still have West Ham and Norwich to play. If we can get a victory here, in conditions almost as favourable as it's possible to be, we barely need to do any more than win those two games and safety would be almost assured. It's really something we can't be looking in the mouth.
I actually hero worship Troy Deeney, but I just don't rate this penalties. I decided to do some research on Pozzo era penalties: Deeney: scored 27 out of 33 at 82% success rate. Non-Deeney: scored 10 out of 12 at 83% success rate. So there's the proof!
I wouldn't write off Pussetto because he's played about an hour of football for us in 6 sub appearances, and usually comes on when we have something to protect
If anyone else scored the amount of last minute own goals as him, they'd have been out of the team ages ago, can't be trading on past glories
Despite my views on Dyche's recruitment policy, he's done an incredible job at Burnley. Bardsley signing will give them a boost and the 11 on the pitch will know exactly what they are supposed to do and how to do it. Burnley are the clear favourites in this game and we will have to perform very well to get anything out of it. We often hear talk of recovery time and other nuances but at the end of the day its usually the better team that wins. Most Burnley players would run through a brick wall for Dyche and tomorrow night won't be any different. It wont be any easier than our other games against this lot. We need a win but its a tall order.
Agreed, needs a proper chance. But also no evidence that he is a good player yet. We need tried and tested right now.
But we have no candidates for the other spot on the wing who we know can put in a reliable performance, we're in danger if we're relying on Pereyra to do something
We should be honoured to be in the same league as such a team, got to enjoy these away days while we can
True. If Dawson and Hughes maintain intensity from Saturday, Doucoure and Capoue return to something like their best and Sarr gets to run at them, we should win this.
