According to today's Sunday Mirror Liverpool have offered Peterborough £5m for BA, and it looks like they are going to accept it; so what does that mean to us?

I thought we had first refusal if BA was to leave Peterborough? Does that mean we have to be given the option to match the deal Liverpool are supposed to be offering and that Britt would have no option but to come to us if we do? How does this work?

If we don't take up the buy back option, I believe we have a substantial sell on clause, so if he goes to Liverpool for £5m how much do we get?

As I understand if Liverpool offer £5m then we have first refusal at £5m which we know we wont ,also they would prob loan him back to posh!
We do have a 50% sell on clause though so would recieve £2.5m which would give us some cash to play with ,I hope it happens for the lad.

The watford observer says a 50% sell in clause, doesn't say of profit either.

Don't think there's any chance of us matching Liverpools offer, I think we'll be happy for the hefty sell on fee that'll be coming our way.

  5. £2.5m for a player who, if we had him, would be sitting on the bench behind Troy

Nice one Nani, decent bit of business

Personally I still think we should never have let him go

I think it's safe to say, if this is true, there will be at least a new thread saying we shouldn't have let him go.

I still think that selling him was good business and this would just make it better.

If he turns out to be a success then fair play to him and Licerpool, we still got a good deal. Wisdom in hindsight may mean we could have got a better one

What would you rather, he stayed here as fourth choice striker and made absolutely no progress in his career?

If nothing else it is probably artificially increasing Deeney's value if he were to go this summer.

Fourth choice behind who? Anya, a makeshift striker for half the season? Or Park, who played an hour of football in four months?

Show me a consistent striker from this season who partnered Troy and I'll give you six forwards who never quite did it for us.

Well I don't think this story is true. I haven't seen it anywhere else (twitter/gossip column etc) and Peterborough paid almost 2million for him. The sell for 5 and they'd make almost nothing from it, they also sold Gayle for 8 mil.

If the sell on fee is 50% then P'Boro will not be selling for 5 million. I expect lots of interest and a move in the region of 8-10 million. They'd be mad to sell him for less.

We've done very well in this deal, in my opinion. I think he's a great goalscorer at lower levels and would probably consistently get 10-15 a season in the Championship. However, I don't think he's technically good enough for the PL and he's not worth much more than about £6m.

If we really do have a 50% sell on clause, then we'll probably end up getting around £5m for a player who's played for us 4 times. Great business.

But you're saying this with hindsight in mind, and so is TVOR, it's easy to forget.

When we made the decision, he'd never scored above L2, when he'd made a couple of appearances for us he looked like a deer caught in headlights. This season he wouldn't have been considered ahead of Deeney, Forestieri, Acuna or Fabbrini. He may well have come in and played better than them had he got the chance, but I don't think he would have got that chance.

Him joining Peterborough meant he had a fresh start and would pretty much be guaranteed to start every game available, which is obviously a huge factor in his development and allowed him to have a fantastic season.

To cling on to some grand idea that he'd have stayed here, elbowed his way past everyone to start with Deeney and then banged in goals is clutching at straws.

Liverpool may sign him up then to boost his experience loan him out to a championship club...

    Hint hint...

    Now that'll be business!

  18. Orny Arry

    Orny Arry Guest

I'm not saying that. I'm saying that we could have just loaned him out again and recalled him when necessary. His value would have increased at the same rate.

Perhaps he didn't want to be loaned out? We did originally plan that, Peterborough wanted to buy him.

Assombalonga would probably rather have dropped to L1 and played 40+ games this season rather than be a bit part trying to force his way in, he was confident enough.

Given the situation and all things considered, selling was right for all parties, it's only now that we could look back and think maybe we should have kept him, but it wasn't really a viable option.

  20. SouthernHornet

We got jakubiak, mensah, izkpeazu all coming through we can't keep them all and £1.5m for assombalonga was a very good deal given he didn't score for Southend in like 20 games in a row, and to get like £2.5 mil on the sell on few we have just got £4m for a reserve team striker, good business

  21. This is the point. If Britt turns out to be a PL striker then we will have done bad business, if it turns out he is a championship striker then we will have done good business.

We won't know the answer to that for 10 years. But what we do know is Troy is proven, as is Forestieri, Ranegie, and if we get him back Vydra; and we have 3 excellent young players with enormous potential in Mensah, Jakubiak, and Ikpeazu. Opportunities for Britt would have been much slimmer than going to Peterborough, and his financial value to us would not have risen so quickly.

  22. WatfordTalk

The ideal scenario would've been than we loan Britt out to P'boro, he scores 30 goals and then comes back for the 14/15 season to fire us to promotion or we sell him for £8m.

However, we didn't know how he'd do in the 13/14 season. All we knew is that he'd scored 15 goals in 43 games at League 2 level. P'boro came in with £1.5m and a 50% sell on fee, we'd of been mad not to take it.

  23. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

Another factor is that players tend to play much better for the club they're owned by than one they're on loan at. I don't think he'd have hit 30 goals as a loanee.

    Interesting times for P'boro then.

If the 50% clause is true then they will have to Stick or twist at 5 mill being his max value. Selling him for that would still make a tidy return on thier transfer record signing

  25. Norwayhornet

thats a great point , if £5m for Britt , then Troy has to be worth at least £8m as a proven championship striker as opposed to a proven L1 striker.although I think walsall have a 10% sell on clause for Troy.

Don't we only get 50% of any profit Peterborough make on the deal? Which would mean £1.75m to us; that's normally how these sell clauses work, isn't it?

Also has anyone any idea how this first option to buy him back clause works? Assuming it means that all we have to do is match any offer that Peterborough have accepted from another club, would it be worth us taking up that option? Especially as we would only have to come up with £3.25m taking into account our sell on portion of the fee.

Personally I think it could be a good idea, as I reckon he could possibly be the pacey striker we need to fire us into the Premiership, plus he will be worth a lot more money in a few years time!

We won't have any idea about the sell on I reckon, there's no set way as to how they work as it's up to each party to stipulate and agree, there could be many variations and parameters that decide how much we're due.

Also the buy back means if anyone makes a bid, then we can match it and talk to the player automatically.

In the simplest way, we could in theory match Liverpool's supposed £5M bid, then buy him (should we convince him to come back) and only physically pay (say for example) £2.5M because of the 50% sell on. But as above, there could be clauses in that, that Peterborough could have insisted on to cover themselves, i.e. if we buy him back the sell on clause is void, otherwise they could have been in a Blackpool/Tom Ince situation.

I'm sure it will be 50% of profit other wide the deal in Peterboroughs side doesn't really add up.
They paid £1.2m for him (from Barry Frys mouth)
They sell for 5m we get 1.9m.. Plus remember we already banked the 1.2....

That's £3.1m in total for a player that like it or not.. When sold, was behind Deeney, Fessi, Fabrini, Acuna an Mensah.. And was prob seen on pat with Ikpesu..... Yes he went on to be a hit last year (in the league below) but at the time, and to now it has to be seen as a brilliant bit of business ! So far play..

    5 million?

No wonder teams look abroad for players at better value!

Mind you the 2.5 million for us would be nice if used wisely.

We could outbid Liverpool in an attempt to start a bidding war between us and Liverpool, we then back out once Liverpool have offered £37m. Win win!

I remember the total shock that most people on here expressed when we sold him, as most of us had been expecting him to break into the first team that season, it seems that a lot of you have forgotten that

I was surprised we sold him, I didn't think he'd break into the first team.

First refusal means that we have the option to match an offer and they will refuse the other but the other club could of course come back with a new improved bid which we would have to repeat the process.

Can see Liverpool maybe taking him as a third striker to understudy the main two. Or possibly loaning him to another premiership club. £5m is steep though if you look at all the other players they're signing.

Nevertheless we could turn round and only offer the 2.5 citing that they're only gonna receive that anyways. Tricky business.
