Where's the voting option for "Someone whose name scans easily into the chant "<manager's name> yellow army"? This should be a priority.

Sure, but I believe El D's thread/poll was constructive..it was debating who we'd like to see in charge next season..and I believe those who had/have doubts about Sannino being a long-term appointment were able to provide well-argued reasons. Mind you, we're looking a bit foolish now after 10 points out of 12!!!!!!!!!!!

You'd better avoid the thread about sending Diakite back (after 1 match) or not rating Merkle (after just 3)!!!

That's fair enough. I just want to see an end to the immediate judgement culture which permeates football. I'm not accusing any individual or group of being guilty of this, as it's seen everywhere! We barely know anything about Sannino yet, or Merkel or even Diakite. Things change so quickly in football, you need to take a longer term view to pass a fair judgement, not 10 games!

Some seem to think Sannino was a panic appointment because he was brought in so fast. I think it was quite the opposite.

My belief is that the Pozzos had him in mind as a future managerial appointment for a while, possibly even for Udinese. To react so fast after Zola's resignation indicates a lot of prior planning. He is quite well thought of in Italy, and I have no doubt our owners are far more aware of what he can do than we are.

That's fair speculation. I counter with the possibility that Sannino was targeted as a no. 2 to Zola. Zola had the panache and flair to lead us, act as a figure head and inspire love in fans and players alike.

  6. With Udinese and Watford starting the season so poorly and fans questioning both Guadolin and Zola, I'd be surprised if the Pozzo's hadn't looked at options for at least one of the clubs

I'd probably agree were it not for the fact we know that Dyche was already lined up as Zola's number 2 in the "Dream Team".

Sadly, Zola's resignation put paid to that idea.

Still at least we didn't concede three this time. That makes him brilliant, right?

So, 2 good results and he's great?

He's mediocre tinged with dullness. That's why he's got to go.

Sure, we can plod along for 4 seasons with a few little runs, conceding few goals but scoring hardly any either, but what's the point?

If the aim is for Watford to regain mid table mediocrity then stick with Sannino. If it's to get promoted and have a chance of eventually playing in the Premier League, he's not the man.

    In your opinion.

No one knows how he'll do in the long run, we can only wait/boycott the club.

I hate to keep chopping and changing things because we need continuity but Sannino is hugely uninspiring.

How do people reckon we compare to the Watford side under Lewington all those years ago? At least back then the players had some passion and togetherness!

  23. I do think a midfield of Tozser, Abdi and Mcgugan behind Fessi and Deeney will be something special at this level. Unfortunately without 3/5 we are mediocre.

I don't think Sannino can be blamed for their loss, but maybe he should be trying something else as a stop gap.... like losing a cb and play Anya and Murray as wingers to put back some of the lost attack and creativity.

    Our results in February:

    Brighton (H) WIN
    Leicester (A) DRAW
    Birmingham (H) WIN
    Middlesbrough (H) WIN
    Yeovil (A) DRAW
    Bolton (A) -

Unbeaten. 11 points from a possible 15. 2 goals conceded in 5 games. Beat Bolton and Sannino could be up for Manager of the Month.

That was more a light hearted jest at the other fans attitude rather than my own personal opinion.
The way I see it, you have take everything into consideration. Sannino is still learning this division and he sets his team up so he wont lose rather than to go for it, even away at Yeovil. Its a long term game plan and he knows, like we all do that playing away and dropping all 3 points is worse than a gain of one.
Creativity lacks when our best players are out, Abdi, Forestieri and I have to say also McGugan as he has come up with some of the goods earlier this season when the whole team was in a mire. I dont think he has played many under Sannino so it will be interesting to see his performances when back to fitness but i know some wont agree with this.
Defensively you cant argue with what Sannino has done. We hardly concede now. An away performance last season against the bottom club at Bristol City we got a result that shows you cant just blow the doors off a team that is scrapping for survival. Why wouldnt that apply to Yeovil this time around?
If we could somehow blend a Zola and a Sannino system to work for us then we would be onto a winner.
Look at Pearson for example and Malky last year, I believe thats what they achieved to gain a foothold in this division. However Leicester had a fantastic run, and that has got be down to team confidence. I just don't think we have that at Watford and I hope it can be turned by Beppe so that we start to get more of that in our football.

    Agree with Watford talk .

If we beat Bolton on Sat then we will be on 14 points from a possible 18 from last 6 games . The spread of teams played in last 6 games being very representative of the division as a whole so no weighting towards bottom teams to gloss over form

Even in our golden period under Zola last Nov/Dec we barely bettered a points per game ratio than that.

Yes it's dull and overly defensive and it does seem that our players have become a little scared to express themselves but you can't argue with stats like that .
( obviously we have to beat Bolton first but I wouldn't bet against it with our new rock solid defence)

Let's wait to see if we can start expressing ourselves in the games to come before we start sharpening the guillotine

What I think many are overlooking is that we were letting goals in at an alarming rate previously. This has now pretty much been eradicated. The manager deserves credit for doing this. We were very soft previously, easy to score against and overly relied on Vydra's goals.

We have to reinvent ourselves, and this is what we are doing. Tighten up at the back, get those much needed points on the board, because at one stage a relegation scrap looked on the cards for sure. Once we are safe then we can maybe we can open up a bit more and be a bit more adventurous. I know we've gone from one extreme to another...from goals galore to scrappy 1-0's and 0-0's, but at least we are not losing. Only 2 defeats in 11 games, so we've picked up points in the vast majority of Sannino's games.

It may not be pretty, but it's effective. So for now, it's progress. This is how Hull and Cardiff basically won promotion last season by being hard to beat. Once you know you do not give away goals, then you know that one goal is all you really need to get something from a match. This breeds confidence, and once quality players (which we certainly have) are confident, their quality shines through.

I just think fans have to be patient with this manager, and it will pay off. I'm sure of it.

Dull, uninspiring football, strange team selections and substitutions. Its like having the Italian version of Ray Wilkins in charge. Steady the ship till the end of the season, and then its a no from me. Get someone else in.

Ray Lewington and his team were absolute dogs**t. He could only get them motivated for cup games. Sannino would never allow us to get battered 5-1 at home to Crystal Palace or by the likes of Gillingham and Crewe away. I am insulted by your comparasions.

Uninspriring? Remember we are Watford not Barcelona! Last season our element of surprise took us a long way.

Sannino was dropped from nowhere into a tough situation in what everyone calls one of the toughest leagues in the world with 2 games per week and look at his Feb results. Not bad at all in anyone's book! He's proving wrong the theory that you need someone UK born who 'knows' the championship and can grind out results on a cold wet Tues in Yeovil. Good work fella.

    'Element of surprise'.

Why is it that any real success by Zola is dismissed as 'lucky', the 'element of surprise' or 'because we had Vydra' yet when we refuse to press Woeful for a win and not have any shots on target in the second half, Sannino is described as 'knowing the Championship'?

****s sake, the man says he doesn't look at the league table. Maybe if he did, he might have realised we were playing a team that had only scored 10 goals at home all season.

I think the bad side of what Sannino has brought to the team is the play acting! and going down far too easily. I know its part of the game, breaks up play but it can be embarrasing and cringeworthy.

Faraoni is the biggest culprit, spends more time on the floor and the rest complaining to the ref. when he does concentrate on playing he can be. Very effective.

    Minor point but noticeable

I find it very sad how low our expectations have now become.

From a year ago, challenging for promotion, scoring goals for fun, every match meaning something, to now being contented with a clean sheet away to the lowest home scorers in the division.

Dull and uninspiring performances, with negative subsititutions and tactics from the touchline.

Some big plusses so far by Sannino (harder to beat, more clean sheets etc) but tempered by some joyless performances.

Can this man truly lift us to the heady heights we desire? I'm not talking about stabilising us, or making us tougher to beat..I'm talking about leading us successfully through a promotion challenge..

That remains to be seen. I think we have to look at his record at the end of the season. He's so far picked up 17 points from 11 games and has 15 more games yet to play. He is already in the right area for a playoff push, so I think, so far, you'd have to back him and say yes he's the right man. Put it this way, I've seen nothing (apart from that dreadful 30 minutes at Forest) that would shake my confidence in the manager.

That could change either way of course, but if you judge what he's done so far, in a short space of time, he is certainly on the right tracks.
