Woah there folks. Yes he's having a purple patch at the moment and we're all the better for it but he's not a "top 6 Prem team player" and nor is he a potential England player. I'm glad he's working hard, and in so doing proving the dopey Wigan fans who wrote him off wrong, but don't get carried away. The competition from Behrami is clearly spurring him on.
Behrami finally gets fit again and Watson puts in possibly his best performance for us. What a squad we have.
'Nor is he a potential England midfielder' Yeah, the embarrassment of riches we have in midfield with the likes of Henderson and Delph is amazing.
That's what I was thinking too, it sounds unrealistic to suggest Watson in the England squad but once you get thinking about the midfield you do wonder
Arguably the best signing of the Pozzo era. Since coming on at half time when we were trailing Blackpool 0-2 he has galvanised us and continues to do so.
Henderson was incredibly poor yesterday. He's got the England player tactic of calling the officials ***** nailed though so fair play to him. Depressing that he'll be at the Euros purely because there's nobody better. Except Watson obviously. I don't see why Watson, who has performed brilliantly this season for a top half Premier League side, couldn't get into the squad. He could be just what the England team needs, we're crying out for that solid holding player after trying Shelvey, Wilshere etc there. Then I remember Hodgson is the manager and Delph, Henderson and Milner will be picked along with bizarre inclusions such as Kieron Gibbs who plays every other week for Arsenal.
Do you not think he might have realised his England potential somewhat sooner if it actually existed? He'll be 31 not long after the Euro 2016 finals. Hardly one for the future. Anyway, I'm not looking to slag the bloke off. He's doing a top job for us and frankly any diversions to have play meaningless international games would not serve us well anyway.
If he can do it now we hardly need him to be one for the future! Appreciate where you're coming from but the way he is playing along with the crap form of the England midfielders means he should be considered by Woy imo.
Wasn't it about this age that Scott Parker became a regular for England? I don't necessarily think he'd be suited to that level, but his position is definitely one in which experience tends to be more important than being an exciting young talent. Doesn't matter, anyway - we all know it will be between Carrick or Wilshere for the defensive midfield place.
If we win the league with Watson scoring 20 goals from the heart of our midfield, Hodgkinson might think about it. Otherwise forget it.
Ever since Hogg left there has been a hole in our midfield, but Watson, along with Capoue, Behrami and the newly found defensive elements to Abdi's game have partially filled that hole. And for that they all deserve phenomenal credit.
