I read on and people also writing off Watson, who's been superb sui far. Now it's 'apart from a couple of good games.'

How about, 'apart from one bad game,' Watson has been excellent (taking it for granted that he played badly today as I missed it).

I think Nyom has very much taken over the doyley mantle these days. Never looks quite right with a ball at his feet and loves a good aimless chip down the channel

What performances were they? I seem to remember him being completley inaffective in most games this season, ahh he was average against Swansea and West Ham is that what you're reffering to? In that case he definitely deserves to start every game. Oh I think he got a great assist in 2013 against Birmingham that people seem to have forgotten about. Oh and that goal at Barnsley a few years back!!

Ok well done anya better luck next time and jurado I'm sure one of your sideways passes will create something good soon!

Moog - do you go to the games. I agree he has looked lively but ebd product is poor and i think every tem we have played has had a better player in a similar position.

i agree he has worked his socks off and can look lively but apart from the cross for Ighalo in the West Ham game, which to be honest! was not great his end product has been woeful.. he is out of position and this is starting to show - very clearky and not just today

I think you're lashing out a bit. Take a breath and calm down. Anya has not been poor over the majority of this season and has put in a shift in a range of positions, creating chances, defending well at times and causing opposition teams problems. Don't rewrite the season in a rage.

So why has nobody mentions it until today? Everyone has been silently noticing this and only now are people all simultaneously venting their frustration? Or its it a knee jerk reaction.

This is the first home game I've missed and I've watched am the away games online.

i have said it from day one. it is a weak link - we have Ake on the bench plus a left back that kept Cole iut of the roma team for two years not playing. Anya should not be starting - for effort he should be but he us not able to compete at this level.

that is not based on todays game - that is based on season so far

To add to that we have Layun at Porto. Doubt if he wants to come back but that is Holebas, Layun and Ake and i doubt anyone(even Anyas mum) could argue he should be starting with those players around

I'd rather Anya over Holebas as Holebas doesn't want to play for us. It's really Anya or Ake just

I think Anya's all round 'clubmanship' is blinding QSF to the fact that he is a very modest talent. He had an absolute shocker today (not the only one, granted) and is clearly on the evidence of the season to date out of his depth from a skill point of view. Jurado barely got involved today and I can't have the argument that he is not in his preferred position - he is lightweight, not streetwise and rather gutless. I'd far rather see any of Ibarbo, Diamanti or Berghuis in place of these two as well as getting Behrami back and giving Guedioura some kind of look in.

Holebas doesn't want to be here, Layun wanted to leave, I suspect Ake was on the bench because he had played twice last week and could be used as centre back cover. Both Anya and Watson have done very well this season according to the majority on here but we lose to Man Utd and all of a sudden have been rubbish all season.

Everton, Newcastle and a game at home.

  16. I've held the same view of Anya for the last couple of seasons, nothings changed, I haven't suddenly started slating him because of a bad performance

He's valuable as a squad player, he's flexible, can cover multiple positions, has incredible pace and stamina, makes intelligent runs and stretches the game

He's not particularly great in any position, doesn't get his head up, the step overs don't fool top defenders, can't cross a ball to save his life

Ake is a better left back (and should be first choice)

I recall noticing his severe lack of end product for most of last season, this isn't anything new and I remember asking for him to be dropped as well. He peaked under Zola and hasn't been the same since.

Do you remember a couple of months ago when Layun was getting absolutely slaughtered on here?

Now he's banging in chumpions league goals, all of a sudden there's a few nostalgic tears.

Anya is, admittedly, not a left back by any definition of the word. Nor is Ashley Young. The idea is to use the full back's pace in overlapping and hope they can do a reasonable enough job of defending. Full backs are not big mud-splattered lunks who stand around on the edge of the 18 yard box wearing numbers two and three any more.

In this role, Ketchi does a reasonable enough job. He works hard, runs his socks off and tries his hardest. His pace gives us an 'out' with a ball knocked over the top down the wing. His defending, considering the titchy size of the lad, is OK-ish.

What is frustrating is, as ever, his final ball. I've lost count of the time he's got clear through decent trickery or a blast of pace, but then it always seems to go downhill from there. It doesn't matter whether it's an under or overhit cross or a pullback into the area, it always always without fail seems to be straight to a grateful defender.

Agreed my comment about Watson was for the Manure game only. He seemed off pace compared to his usual reliable self. Maybe a little under the weather.

Anya wasn't great yesterday but I'm surprised to see the level of vitriol on here especially when Jurado was, again, complete and utter dog****e.

It seems easy for our fans to go and criticise the players that were in the side last season as the ready made reasoning of 'can't make the step up' is immediately applied.

Deeney had it after about five games. Just the latest bull****tery from the fans who would rather cream themselves because we have a player that on YouTube looked great but in reality is toilet.

A player who looked absolutely lost and outclassed....

    Alan-Romeo Nyom. That's who.

Sorry to say it Al, but a terrible showing.

This is my point about the mess our fan base has got itself in. Anya has been one of our most consistent and hard working players this season, most have said it on here. Even more true of Watson. It's very sad that so many have got all billy big time since our promotion, and feel like they can stick it to players who have never shirked their responsibilities in a yellow shirt.

Ake should have started with Anya ahead of him, Jurado is a good player but you could see he wasn't fit.
A lot of people here seem to forget that their midfield 4 are all good International players, they made our midfield look bad by their play and pressing, making the defenders have to pass back a lot.
4 of our 5 loses are v the top 4 and if Palace win then we have lost 5 games to the top 5 teams.
Let us all speak in 4 weeks after we have played our next 3 games.
Anya wasn't a world beater before and he ain't ****e now.

Anya is an offensive player albeit an average one, not a defensive one. But because our squad is shallow we make the best of what we have putting players in positions they are not comfortable with and trying to do their best.

Well now you know, write it down on a piece of paper and keep it in your wallet to so you can remind yourself every now and again.

Also, Flores is equally at fault for Jurado's performance, why play someone who isn't match fit?

Once again, the players play, the Head Coach and Coaching staff choose who plays in which positions.

My opening thread wasn't basing Anya's performance on just yesterday's game. Unfortunately, in my opinion, he's been crap for a long while. I struggle to see what positives he brings to the team.

  29. Clive_ofthe_Kremlin

Vic - he brings stepovers and trickery and bamboozlery which not all of our players have by a long chalk, but most of all he brings pace and the possibility of overlapping and picking up the punt over the top down the wing.

Where I would agree with you is that you would expect a player in that sort of position to chip in with 3 or 4 or maybe more goals per season and I can't see him threatening to score at all.

If we were able to replace him with someone who has bags of pace, can defend a bit, doesn't mind running his guts out for 90 mins AND has a good rate of end product in terms of goals and assists AND is homegrown AND who preferably is a quiet religious type who is never going to cause any trouble in the dressing room, then I'm quite happy to sell Anya.

Anya is good off the ball because his runs and pace drag opposing players around the pitch creating space for our more talented players.

On the ball though he isnt good enough for this league. He cant cross, cant shoot and isnt as good as Ake as a defender.

I think Nyom has played poorly in the last few games considering how good he looked in the opening 6 games.

Is that serious that he has to be a religious type to not cause any trouble?? Don't know how true that is atm. There are plenty of pacey players with even average end product that we could replace him with.

I like Anya as he has been a good player for us in the Championship and he comes across as a great character, but really he isn't good enough to play in this league.

I think he's in the team because of his attitude and the shortcomings of other players. The LB position would be Holebas' if he wasn't such a **** and out wide Ibarbo and Berghuis haven't delivered yet, not that they've really been given the chance to.

In January I hope we sign a player that finally retires Anya from the starting 11.

Surprised to see so much support for Anya being dropped, but each to their own. I thought he started the season stronger than some are suggesting, but was stifled on Saturday because Man United were defending very wide and he was unhelpfully at left back. I thought we showed very little of what we were capable of on Saturday - the ball seemed to just be bouncing off us as though it was half the weight expected by the players' first touch. When we're playing fearlessly I think Anya provides a real threat on the break. Is he replaceable? Of course - but we don't have a like for like in the team that the manager seems to trust just yet, so we have to make the best of what we have.

Ben Watson however - now there is someone I think is taking up valuable space. People keep telling me he's solid and adds stability - but I just don't see it. Games like Saturday where we're forced to play through the middle - he just doesn't add any spark. I think we would have created more chances for Deeney and Igahlo with Guedioura in the team

Layun and Holebas wanting to leave would certainly have been contributed to by it being made clear to them that Anya was ahead of them in the pecking order. Ake is more accepting because he's not yet an established top flight player.
