How would you have both still playing? A complete formation change?

And if one is dropped, you would still lose what they bring to the team.

So who says we can't take him on loan?

Levy's slapped a £14m price tag on him for a permanent move but he's also a business man and that's his opening gambit for negotiation.

If we speculate and say offer £2m for the loan and £12m option in the close season, if we opt not to buy then they can dangle him to West Brom for Berahino. But at least for 5 months he's off Totttenham's wage bill.

Levy thinks he's a player in the art of negotiation, however I think Gino's trumps him...Harvard educated and all that...comes in handy.

Remember Joey Barton was odds on to join us in the summer..

Who says Townsend will start? All I'm saying is he gives us another option whether that be from the start or the bench. Quique makes it very clear that nobody is guaranteed a starting place so either Townsend does an Iturbe on us and doesn't sign or he accepts he has to fight to displace Jurado or Abdi who have been fantastic for us.

I'd rather spend £14m on someone who would benefit the starting line up, or if not, divide that up a bit for subs.

No way we would spend £14m on him as a sub option.

But that's the point...NO ONE is guaranteed a starting place...unless it's Wayne Rooney of course.

    I am not arguing that.

I am saying that at £14m I would expect someone who is a lot better than what we already have. What do we have in Townsend's position? Abdi and Jurado.

    Is Townsend much better? No.

I understand where you're coming from however we didn't know if Capoue was going to be so awesome (apologies for the surfer talk) so we know Townsend has pace to burn, we know he's got a great left foot...but one thing we are lacking in is pace on the flanks.

I believe he adds another weapon in Quique's arsenal, if we can get the right deal (like Iturbe) then the risk/reward is in the positive column.

That's completely true but Capoue wasn't a massive outlay in proportion to what we spent in the Summer.

As I said yesterday, I wouldn't be opposed to buying Townsend for around £5m as he would be a good back up to the squad, and like you say he would offer us something different. I personally don't think he is any better than Jurado or Abdi so thats why I would be happy to spend around £5m on him.

However, I think anyone we sign for £14m needs to be someone who will definitely add quality to our starting XI

Gino has already dealt with Levi. There is 0% chance we will pay anywhere near £14m. That is ridiculous. Townsend lives in London and is settled - he won't be signing for Sunderland so his options are limited. If Levi wants him off his wage bill we are in a strong position - he does not need to move house but £5m max or ideally loan till end of season with option to buy.

    £14m -

No Capoue wasn't in terms of money in relative terms of PL transfers...however when he effectively doubles our previous transfer record, I admit I was a little nervous.

The problem is we'e not in a position to buy 'starters' so we have to buy squad players or out of favour ones and it's going to be unlikely we can get a 24 year old England international for £5m.

So if we want him and he's keen to come here, we'll have to see what Gino can do...although if Stambouli had come here, can you imagine getting those 2 for £10m? I think if we do get Townsend then it will be on favourable terms.

Even Troy has enough respect for Quique to know unless he gives 100% everyday he won't start.

Yes but Spurs have shown before (Gomes) that they'll happily let someone's career go down the cr@pper if they feel like it.

Agreed, however they are still in the red for the Bale money they spent. Levy is desperate to free up wages for FFP reasons and they're still paying Adebayor.

You never know, maybe a joint bid for Adebayor and Townsend for £14m...would be palatable (I know Adebayor is out of contract, however I'm thinking more about the wages)

I don't believe any of this.

There is simply no chance of Pozzo paying £14m for Andros Townsend.

To much - Spurs are paying £100k a week(5m a year) on Adebayor. Any transfer fee should be minimal. Crazy to pay a transfer fee for Adebayor - he has proved before as soon as he signs his commitment drops. Loan till end of season the only option and then see what is available at the Euros for a perm. May need two if Iggy goes

Why don't we save £13m and just pay Anya another £1m to play the Townsend role better than Townsend?

Don't forget peeps, being HG at this level bumps the price up a few mill on it's own. If he were not his price would probably be under £10M

If he weren't English, he'd be labelled as a big-money flop with a bad attitude. Spurs wouldn't be able to get rid of him even if they tried, a la Adebayor. To even consider paying £14m for him is madness.

You could be right, although "big-money flop with a bad attitude" is pretty much exactly what they were saying about Capoue a few months ago. I guess time will tell if he ends up at The Vic. At least we won't have to worry too much as long as we stay in The Prem. The TV Money more than compensates for any mistakes.

Not quite sure why everything has to be so black and white on here. Forget the money, the Pozzos know what they are doing so whatever they spend is pretty irrelevant. Would he improve the match day squad? In my opinion yes. He's still in the frame for an England place guys, I'd say he would add some quality to the side, we don't really have a player like him.

Spurs is a graveyard for players. We all know that , as we have witnessed just how good Capoue and Gomes are.

Paulinho , Lamela and Soldado cost a combined total of 70 mill. They were all sh1te for Spurs despite coming with an impressive track record.

Who s to say Townsend is not a victim of the ' Tottenham Footballers Graveyard' syndrome?

He s done very well for England, has been on loan to more clubs than any other player I know which shows a great attitude.

QSF won't sign him if his attitude isn't right. So if we buy him , we can feel confidant his attitude is in the right place.

Is he a better winger than what we already have ? Yes , by a long chalk.

So great let him come and see how hard Abdi and Jurado work for the team. If he wants to play he's got to match that.

Not if a bad transfer leaves the squad short, and we go down.

At £14m, and with a conservative £50k, four year contract, a transfer for Andros Townsend would cost £24.4m. That's about a quarter of a year's TV money.

The TV money is huge, but when prices rise as a consequence it doesn't stretch as far as some seem to believe. It's effectively helicopter money -because people have more money to spend, prices rise until the point that the only long-term effect of dropping money is higher prices. In a footballing sense, this is particularly apparent in the domestic market, where there is less need to sell which also pushes the price up.

Bar a season of exceptional performances from Townsend, I don't think I can be convinced that he is a £24.4m risk worth taking.

  27. ... although if you calculate Townsend costs (£24.4M) based on a 4 year contract it might be fairer to compare v 4 years of revenue (say 4 x mid table finishes ~£500M)

Personally I think it's still too rich for Gino and unless we can get him for something sensible we will go elsewhere, Perotti for example was only £7M ish as I recall

He's still in the frame because he plays for Spurs, if he came to us and played better than he ever had for Tottenham he'd probably struggle to get in the England team.

Or, he could go to Sunderland, have a free role and a terrible attitude, and still get paid twice as much than if he came to us.

Can someone explain why Townsend is being talked about at 14 million and doesn't make his own clubs first team and yet little old Watford's scoring sensation is talked about going to some Spanish side for a bumper 12 million.

I think Gino and QSF have earned enough trust. If they believe £14m is the right price, we need to trust them.
