I just found out a girl in my class is a cheerleader for the Texans. It's a small class with 10 or so people, she never really stood out, but now I know this her hotness has increased. What'ya reckon?

Pretty incredible Okoye has joined the 49er's, although I doubt he'll play much. Tebow released as well, where's he gonna end up?

I don't really follow the NFL... but I think I could learn to do so quite easily...

For all the orns across the pond, I've always wondered why college football gets the attendances they do? I mean in some games (if not nearly all) they will get the same attendances as NFL games, yet they are at a worse level.

Also, go Bills. Our offensive is very good and finally we've got rid of Fitzpatrick. I genuinely reckon with Kolb (and maybe with Manuel as well) we could finally break our playoff duck

College Football is like football to us. You have a an allegiance to your school in the way we have an allegiance to our local team (sometimes local team). Often generations of a family will attend the same school, passing down the traditions etc that come with following a team. Finally, only a large cities have an NFL team, oftens hundreds or even thousands of miles from anywhere else. Take Alabama who don't have an NFL team in-state, or LSU in Baton Rouge, or University of Texas in Austin, all have huge followings, but are based in smaller cities. Heck, even high school games in some places with attract 20,000 people. The football stadium at the school where my wife previously taught had a 16,000 seater stadium. Personally, I much prefer the college game to the NFL because of the tradition and passion that the fans bring to games. The atmosphere at a college game is usually fantastic in my experience. If you gave me a choice between attending Texans v Cowboys or Texas v Texas A&M, I'd pick the latter every time.

Just noticed that Kolb had to leave practice this morning. He was drafted from the University of Houston, the school I currently attend. He should be able to hold off any challenge from EJ Manuel who is a tidy passer of the ball. Texans fever has well and truly struck Houston again now that workouts have begun. Like I said, I keep an eye on the NFL and follow the Texans games, but I look forward to Saturday's and college ball a lot more than I look forward to Sunday's and NFL.

Ahhhhh I get it. I've looked at a map now and without properly counting the smaller states of the East Coast I can safely deduce that there are at least 15 states without an NFL team. Then you add that to cities like Austin or Baton Rouge and there really is a scope for high attendances in college football. I do also remember reading somewhere that the passion, loyalty and atmosphere at college football is much more than at a nfl game. I could compare it to the Premier League vs the Championship in that the Prem clearly has the better quality football but the Championship clearly has the more loyal and passionate fanbases (and arguably have better atmospheres as well). Yeah I'd love to go to a college football game, preferably a game of significance like Texas vs Texas A&M.

Yeah Kolb definitely has to be first choice. It'd be insane of us to chuck in Manuel right away, no matter how good he is. I remember buzzing about our team last season, especially when we got Stevie Johnson and CJ Spiller was doing well. Back then I didn't realise how much of a weak link Fitzpatrick was. Do you think the Texans will get further than they did last year, maybe even get to the AFC final?

Also I didn't know you're at uni there? What course?

Well I don't think there will be an Aggie v Longhorn showdown for some time now that A&M have jumped ship to the SEC, but there are plenty of tradition filled rivalry games that would we be incredible to attend. There is a lot more variety in college ball, lots of different style offenses which make the games very interesting. On the whole, most of the players have a different kind of passion as well, with the majority playing purely for the love of the game (and scholarships) and knowing they have no chance of ever making the NFL, whereas the professional players are drafted by a franchise where they'll play until the next big check comes along.

It's hard to predict how the Texans will do. They've managed to build a pretty young and talented team, but there are some doubts about whether Schaub has the quality to take a team deep into the post-season. NCAA record breaking University of Houston QB Case Keenum is making some strides this off-season to become Schaub's undisputed deputy, but I don't think he's big enough or strong enough to ever become a starter in the NFL.

I took the opportunity to return to school when I moved out here and went back to my first love.....History. Having tried and quickly grown despondent with doing something I didn't enjoy purely because of the pay check in the UK, I felt as though my move out here was the right time to pursue a career in an area that I found interesting and had a passion for.

    Good explanation, Lukey.

A few other points about NFL demand: Los Angeles has two schools that fill the Rose Bowl and LA Coliseum on the same day, yet no NFL team at present. Some wonder if there is even room for an NFL team here, given the loyalty to those schools. Oregon has no NFL team, but a strong football program at the Univ of Oregon. There is no NFL in an east/west line between Seattle and Minneapolis/Green Bay/Chicago, and that leaves a huge amount of room for other football teams.

Now Texas is uniquely "football crazy". Demand for football is astronomical there. The high school stadiums for football in Texas are common there, but harder to find elsewhere. It is stretching the point, but similar to LA, there is almost no room for the NFL there as a result. However, if Jerry Jones can get a winner in Dallas, everyone will get back on the bandwagon again. The Cowboys are like Man Utd insofar as a near majority of supporters don't live in Dallas. TVOR's son, who lives in Twickenham, has made several pilgrimages to Cowboy's Stadium, that homage to crass capitalism, already.

When I lived in the SF Bay Area for school, I attended my school's games but never even once considered going to a 49ers or Raiders game.

I'm a bit of an NFL freak and will happily sit down on a Sunday evening and watch 6 hours plus. However the Sky coverage is definitely best if muted when Neil Reynolds has anything to say.

This thing about a majority of Cowboy supporters not living in Dallas is surely the closest there is to nationwide support. The "America's Team" label goes back a long way to the late 70's with Staubach/Landry and the Aikman/Johnson era in the early 90's just added to the hype.

I'm not sure Jerry Jones can get them another SB if he continues to throw money at Romo and/or becomes a bit more distanced from running the team. In this modern age an owner cannot be GM/CEO etc as well and hope to continually make the right decisions for the team. Just look at the sad demise of the Raiders as an example of how an owner with too much involvement can translate into poor teams on the field. No winning season in over a decade speaks for itself.

Fair play to Jerry Jones, he has made the Cowboys into a huge commercial success even though they haven't been particularly successful over the last 15 years or so. Just think he needs to concerntrate on this rather than picking the team !!!

Anyone else going to the games at Wembley? Watford on Saturday, NFL on Sunday. Perfect!

Why do the games at wembley have to be so expensive. I'd go and love if it it wasn't expensive. I'm going to try and keep better tabs on this season. Go patriots.

For the record, NFL games are very expensive here in the states, too.

When I got round to looking they were £70ish.

Ill just settle with watching the uk games and the superbowl and streaming the odd patriots game.

I've just been searching for tickets to the Ravens v Steelers game, and it looks like the cheapest ticket is $170. Not sure what face value is, but I'd say £70 would be a bargain here...

  31. simms

Wow. How does that compare to college football?

  32. Fitz

Cal sent me an email offering a 3-Game pack starting at $85 for this season. I'd do it if I didn't live 6 hours away...

Anyway, NFL has astronomical demand and limited supply. College football has a lot more supply, so that explains some of the price differences.

I think you'll find its called the much more acceptable and much less capitalist AT&T Stadium now Fitz :p

And with regards to cost of tickets if the games at Wembley are priced between £36 and £70 that is much cheaper than I've paid for Cowboys tickets - I think the first time I went the tickets cost $99 and the second and third about $129 and those were "nosebleed" seats - you want the good ones and you are looking at upwards of $200

Anyone on here a member of a fantasy football league?

Just shelled out a $100 to play with a group over here. (they've been doing it for 15 years) Got a feeling I'm gonna get stuffed!

Pretty much the only way to get tickets for the Pats in New England is if you know season ticket holders, they have a season ticket exchange where tickets go for face value + a not extortionate service charge. Can pick up decent tickets for just over a hundred bucks.

If your paying through a 3rd party service (stubhub, aceticket etc) then you're looking at $200 minimum unless you want to sit upper 3rd tier in a corner!
