Not surprised by the fee, whats he got, 1 year left? I'd have like £2-2.5 mill. Remember there are probably sell ons as quoted, what if thats 500k if they stay up? Suddenly the deal looks very good. Good luck Mapps, Reading are getting a great player
maybe someone in the know can help but i was in fact that there was a 2.2+add-ons bid just put in so i think 1.8 might be a bit short of the mark.
Mapps is a excellant Championship defender who is in the last year of his contract (apprently) but has only played 1 season in the prem when he was a kid. So 2mil is about right in the current climate. Clubs wont be throwing money around this summer. If he is going to leave, let him go early so we can have a better chance of picking up a decent replacement before they get a better offer. He has been a very good player for Watford and I wish all the luck in the prem if he does indeed leave.
I was about to say. Probable open marketworth = 3-4 Million "little old watford" correction x 0.5 3 to 4 million x 0.5 = 1.5 to 2 million
Bennett played at Upton Park against West Ham back in March and he was absolutely immense until he collided with John Eustace and left the pitch in a neck brace. I have high hopes for him.
I don't think its as bad a deal as some are saying it is. People are forgetting that Sordell was a lot younger than Mariappa is now and he is quickly approaching the peak of his career.
i think we need to rememebr 2 or 3 things 1 - we are a selling club, we have to sell players to survive. Dyche won't get much of what is generaed to buy players, thats a simple fact of being Watford. The situation has been the same for the last 15, 20 years, we should be use to it by now. 2 - Is Mapps worth 3 or 4 million ? If we had that sort of money would you be happy to see us spend £3.5m to buy him from another championship club ? At tops his worth £2.5m 3 - As HB1 and I have both said, every day, week, Month that goes by and he hasn't signed a new contract his value depriciates. Look at all the other posts in this section where everyone seems to think that the players we want to sign or could sign, will be cheap because they are in the last year of their contract. If it works that way for bringing players in then it works that way for players going out. 4 - Finally, he was on the same contract with the same clauses as Cowie. The club managed to get him to sign an extention and change his contract. No agent worth his salt would have allowed that without there being some benifit to his client, thats their job. If his agent is doing his job right he will be telling Mapps not to sign a contract till after the window has shut and he has seen what offers come in. At what point do we take the money and run ?
in my mind anything around 2m is perfectly acceptable bearing in mind he has only got a year left on his contract and is relatively unproven in the premiership.
On the back page of the WO: ADRIAN MARIAPPA insists he is happy to remain at Watford but accepts things can "change in a short space of time".
I do wonder if it would actually be best if we did sell him. We always end up selling at least one of our best players every summer, but seem to recover quite admirably. We already have Tiny, Nuggsy and Bennet at CB and Hoban in development. I'd still sign a replacement for Mapps, but if he went for £2m cash upfront let's say, even 800k of that could go a long way in rebuilding the squad.
As money will be needed to make the next bond repayment this has to be generated from player sales. Realistically the only players worth £1m plus are Mapps and Murray (perhaps also Deeney if he continues his rate of scoring in the second half of the season and keeps out of prison). I think it is much more important to keep Murray.
Frustrating how we seem to accept low offers so early in the summer. But he does deserve a crack in the premier
Supposedly a fee has been agreed between us and reading which would be their record signing, i've no idea if that's true or not and he's yet to make a decision whether to leave or not, or if reading is the right place to go.
Just to point out that Reading's record transfer fee paid is £2.5 million, I think. If it is more than that then it could be a good deal for the club but that all depends on how much of that is up front and add-ons etc.
Considering rumours were flying around of £1.8m a few days ago, £2.6m seems a good deal in hindsight.
We should tell them £8m, take it or leave it. If Jordan Henderson is worth £20m, Mapps is worth £1.5tn.
I honestly think if this sale goes through it will benefit us overall. We have adequate cover in defence and we need the funds to re-inforce weaker parts of the side such as a goalscorer and wide player. We didn't look too bad defencively when Mariappa was missing towards the end of the season after all.
mapps going to Reading Mapps is going to Reading ,just waiting to see the outcome of the buy out ,but its a done deal !!
