    Crikey that's not too bad!

I thought for one moment you were going to say Luton got promotion this season!

Without a like for like replacement I’d argue we’d need a change of formation to cope if Doucouré does leave. If we did that I don’t think it would be that big an issue - Capoue Cleverley Hughes Quina and possibly Chalobah and the new guy as well. Any 2 would get run over but 3 of them, all offering something a little bit different would be quite good.

Javi has the luxury at the moment of Capoue and Doucouré coping as a two.

Not sure how we'd score without 2 up front though.

I don't think that any of Deeney, Gerry or Gray can play up front on their own

That's Doucoure injured until the 9th August then

Is anyone really that bothered at the prospect of losing an integral part of a midfield that wes humiliated time and time and time again in the most important game in our club's recent history?

    No, me neither.

Uuurrrghhhh... we're going to sell him to those ***** for a reasonable price and not have time to get a replacement aren't we?

No joke, I just don't see us spending that sort of money on a centre mid when we've already signed three of them this summer.

Also, given the new deal Doucoure signed and how late in the window it is, I don't see you selling for anything other than an astronomical fee.

Since our new DoF came in, we've been far more sensible with the money, so for a number of reasons (that tweet the most recent of them), I don't see it.

    Ah, fair enough!

If Holebas still has the legs for it.

Just don't put Kiko in the back 3 where he might have to defend.

Gonna have to be a stupid amount to sell to those clowns. The clubs said time and time again that they wouldn’t stop a player joining a champions league club. But why sell to rivals unless of course for mega money.

Don't they already have a first choice midfield anyway in Gbamin, Andre Gomes and Sigurdsson?

So would you rather keep him and not sign anybody or sell him and get Sarr and maybe another defender?

Difficult call. Depends how good Sarr and the "other defender" are. I fear Sarr may be another Niang.....

  17. If he wants to go and we get a great price then good luck to him. That's our model. That's why good players come here.

I'm confident one of Cleverley, Chalobah, Quina, Hughes or Bashiru will comfortably make that spot their own. For me Capoue has always been the most important CM.

I think Everton could do well this season, Arsenal and Chelsea are poor and have no right to top 6.

Good question but I really don’t think it’s a case of one or the other. I think any deal for Sarr certainly doesn’t depend on Doucoure leaving and if the club wanted another defender, they could finance that as well. We have shown in the past that we don’t have to sell to be able to buy - of course it’s beneficial financially to do so but I doubt we have to.

Now if the question was - do I think it would be worth selling Doucoure for £50m and have that money reinvested in 2 or 3 players who are worth £20m-£25m? Then I think so. I wouldn’t like to lose him but I think we’d cope if it was reinvested in players who are definite upgrades for positions in the squad. But that won’t happen. We’d take the £50m and spend about £8m maximum.

He faded badly last season and was garbage in the cup final. I dont think any champions league club will ever come in for him so if everton are offering something daft like 100k a week he should bite their hand off.

Same for me. I think the Sarr rumour is odd as we don’t play with wingers and price by no means a guarantee of a player being successful.

Rather keep Doucoure - Will be unpopular here - but I don't see why Sarr is worth so much. Just seems to have pace, and falls over a lot in the videos i've seen, with a couple of belters thrown in the mix.

We are constantly told we have the best scouting network there is and while I agree that a large fee isn’t a guarantee off success, it’s a fairly large indicator of talent. If our extensive scouting network have suggested that Sarr is worth £25m or whatever, I’d be fairly confident that he is. But I accept the system isn’t perfect an mistakes are made. I just think of a club our size is outlaying that sort of money, they must be fairly certain.

But I agree with your view on his position. He plays very wide, which is fine if he cuts inside etc but if he likes to swing in crosses, we don’t play that way. My belief is that he will in a ‘tucked in’ role like Pereyra and Hughes do - and I’m a bit confused why we’d spend so much on a player to not play him where he’s comfortable. There’s been no experimentation during pre-season to play with more width in midfield - only with WB’s against QPR.

No one in the Sarr thread had even heard of him before May.

People are just desperate for an expensive foreigner to sign. Me included.

I’d rather sell Doucoure for £5m and buy no one, than sell him for £60m and replace him with Jake Livermore.

Even if we really do want him, I'm not remotely convinced he's worth the money you will want. You look abroad at people like Kessie and Sangare who would cost far less in terms of transfer fee and wages (and who are both younger), and you wonder if there's really that much value in this?

He is a good player, absolutely no mistake, but it's difficult to work out where he fits in our team as things stand and, that being the case, why we'd be prepared to spend so much money on a player who doesn't seem to naturally fit into what we are doing. Would much rather we got the immediate needs of winger and centre back sorted before we went down this road.

Is there any thought that Everton have done this just to disrupt our beginning of season with us playing up there second match? And have no real wish to spend big money for him at all?
Turn heads, that sort of thing?

You don't believe they wouldn't do you?

Perhaps not specifically to derail our season, but to unsettle a player who they might then get a big more cheaply than by simply offering market price?

  32. toffeeblue9

    toffeeblue9 First Year Pro

Oh yeah, I could see us trying to unsettle a player, but only if we actually want him.

Has anyone ever tried to sign a player without really wanting to sign them just to disrupt another team?

  33. Burnsy

I’d say there’s zero chance of that being the case and is extreme paranoia for anyone to think it would be true!

  34. NathWFC

    NathWFC First Team

Cleverley is complete and utter dross in comparison to Doucoure, Chalobah could quite easily be finished, Quina is still relatively unproven, Bashiru is completely unproven and could end up nowhere near good enough much like other youngsters who have been "highly rated" over the years, and Hughes seems like he won't get a look in in the middle, despite the fact it's clearly his best position.

If Doucoure goes for big money and we don't replace him with some proven, ready made quality, as well as having sold Lukebakio and not signing anyone else but Dawson, then it really is a disgrace.

Quina and Chalobah are injured whilst the Tom Bashiru guy wasn't on the bench the other day so maybe not one for the 1st team squad straight away.....

Would leave us very light in midfield regardless what you think of the quality of those players.
