It could just be that our defence is leaving him more exposed this season

Accepting that you might be being ironic and/ or reprising an earlier thread, if serious, when did you last see him risking his physical wellbeing in diving wholeheartedly at an attackers feet? He's paid to get in the way, not out of it.
The comparison with Almunia is a good one.

He has been notably worse this season.

I don't agree with your concluding sentence but the rest of the post mirrors my own view. Gomes is having his swansong season and playing like it. Even the 4th goal yesterday looked like a lame non-effort by him. We need to be looking for a replacement in the summer.

"dismal showing" very harsh in the context of a $h#te performance of all in front of him.

Don't agree at all - although we should be looking for a long term replacement like Jordan Pickford who is English, and if Sunderland are relegated could be available in the summer.

Brilliant goalie, think his careers winding down now though and would be surprised if he was our no.1 next season.

Nothing too much wrong with his keeping but it's the distribution that is creating issues. You see games like yesterday and realise what a fantastic keeper Lloris is, for example, even though he had no saves to make until the 90th minute, his distribution was immense, the calmness on the ball, precision and quality of passes meant it was like playing with an extra player for them. Spurs players were happy to pass back to the keeper or drop short for goal kicks because they knew they would keep possession, if we do the same thing, we know Gomes is very likely to hook it out for a throw or just pump it long and hope Deeney wins a header, giving the opposition possession straight away again and putting us under pressure. It's also why Pants will never make it with us as well.

The other option with keepers is to have someone who can kick it the length of the pitch, into the channels for players to run onto, like Foster does successfully for WBA and Rondon to run onto, again, we know Gomes can't kick well now and chooses to throw (which are very decent for not the same length) probably due to the same reason Almunia didn't kick, his hamstrings have gone. This would also impact his spring for claiming crosses etc, again something that has noticeably declined in Gomes this year.

Playing the formation we do, it's important that the keeper is comfortable in possession so like others, I feel for next season, assuming we manage to stay up, we might have to knock on the door our brothers in Italy and inquire about one of their highly rated young keepers Meret or Scuffet?

Gomes is the least of our problems at the minute... not on top form admittedly, but kept us in the game against Palace.

New keeper for next season though, I agree

Pickford likely to be on better teams' shopping lists: Liverpool, Everton even Arsenal with Cech not getting any younger spring to mind.
I like Marshall, outstanding for Cardiff in their implosion season and likewise for Hull recently: brave, agile and a great shot stopper. Made a mess of a punch from a corner v Everton but then produced a phenomenal save from Lukaku.

I am generally supportive of HG, but at the start of the second half, in the run up to the goal he seemed to be having a lot of (friendly) interaction with the Spurs fans.......

I wonder how many of us would of liked Ben Foster to of signed full time when we had him on loan from Man Utd? He was exceptional and reminded me much of Alec Chamberlain in his prime years.

I do not agree Gomes should be shipped out - he has been a reliable set of hands overall. But we do need fresh faces in. I really hope the club see this and are willing to spend.

On a list of things to criticise about the last match and the club as a whole at the moment, Gomes is somewhere on page 96.

He is only one of eleven players whose distribution is bad at the moment. I'd be happy if he just saved a few goals, attacked and caught a few crosses and provided everyone with a bit of confidence.

You see, this is the type of comment that makes me laugh and why some of the suggestions we see on this forum are laughable at best.

Jordan Pickford is a star of the future, will end up at a big 4/5/6 club and yet our fans seem to think he'd want to come here. A team smaller than the Sunderland side he plays at.

Gomes eventual replacement will be, like 95% of our other signings, a player from abroad.

If we had any intention of shaping a young keeper into a future number 1, someone like Jonathan Bond would have been developed, not moved on to be replaced by some substitute keeper that can just about catch.

I've tried to erase yesterday from my memory, but I definitely remember for their 1st and 4th goal thinking that he pretty much did what the spurs players would probably dream of a keeper doing in that situation and made it very easy for them.

Certainly the 1st goal, it was a relatively tight angle and Kane was coming towards goal from a harder angle to score from being on his right foot, yet he flopped to the floor and gave Kane the whole goal to aim for. in that situation you've either got to stay on your line, or rush forward with conviction but sty on your feet.

A bit harsh on Heurelho in my opinion. They just voted him player of the year on the podcast and it's hard to argue with that.

Mind you if Lansbury and Ashley Young are coming back, I wouldn't say no to getting Ben Foster back between the sticks at the same time.

I had the same thought, but unfortunately Ben has just signed a contract extension at West Brom. :(

He's a mid-table PL goalkeeper. He's been worse this season than last, but he's still more than good enough for us and is miles ahead of Pantimillon who is Championship standard at best.

I remember people saying on here late last season that Gomes was one of top three keepers in the division and that other than perhaps De Gea they wouldn't swap any other keeper for him. Interesting the way that opinions swing so far in the other direction when a player/team are going through a bad patch of form. I saw someone say that Guedioura was a League One player the other day for example.

Our fans also lauded Nyom as one of the best right backs in the league in August 2015, before rating him the worst in January 2016 and finally crying like babies when he goaded them in Dec 2016.

The deterioration in Nyom's form from August to October was mind blowing, let alone January; don't think I can remember a player look so dominant one minute and so abysmal the next.

  23. I think Heurelho is the type of guy who will know when his time is up and proactively tell the club when he's ready to hang his boots up rather than the other way around
