The only way to get him off our books seems to be to pay him the rest of his contract now.

I agree but I expect the club will be looking for a nominal fee to cover the golden handshake. I think that it's possible a PL may take a £2m punt on him towards the end of the window, I think that may be enough for his departure.

    I'm going to say keep.

We're in the championship, we're going to play a load of teams of cloggers and sometimes we'll need the physical prescence that Deeney provides, but imho he's not a guaranteeed starter and I'd like the captains armband to be passed on.

But I think it's getting to the stage where a move on will be best for us and for his career, certainly if we go back up.

I don't really understand the timing of any of this. In the interview after the Arsenal game (26/7), he said he was having an operation the following week on his knee. We returned to training just three weeks later on the 17/8 and we now know Deeney was initially there but then had to leave the group with a problem with his knee.

So did he really have an operation on his knee and then turn up to pre-season training three weeks later? Must've been a very minor procedure if so. Or is this just more nonsense? It was funny how according to him he'd been battling through a knee injury for a while, yet we never heard anything about it until the game he went off with ice on it, then we never heard the end of it. Just don't believe anything he says, to be honest.

Seems odd we're not rid of him yet, as with many on here I figured that us signing Murray was a sign that we were confident Troy was about to leave.

But if you keep him and pass the armband on then that creates a Potential friction point and resentment. If Hughes, for instance, becomes captain how is Deeney gonna relate to that after being the main man and Mr Watford for so long and how might that impact on Hughes authority. Even with the best of intentions it could be problematic. The bigger picture here is team unity and a fresh start and new era as opposed to what Deeney may or not be able to offer as a squad member on the pitch, I think there has to be a clean break,

Strange as it may seem, I presume no-one wants an aging, slow, injured, expensive, loudmouth, non-scoring CF ?

We can't get rid if no-one wants him.

But funds are limited and keeping him stops us signing a new CD or CM or probably both given his wages.... There's really no point in having both him and Murray.

Sure, but if we're going to be stuck with him then it seems odd to sign Murray, unless we don't plan on using Troy even if he stays.

I would be happier knowing if he is staying or going. It looks more like the latter. I still believe it will be more of a last minute window choice for somebody.

It's very strange. In reality we've added three new forwards and lost none so far. There must be a few leaving.

When he's not on the pitch or in the matchday squad I don't see it as an issue.

Not so sure we are an atractive prospect for decent players atm. If we can find a decent replacement then fair enough, but I'd rather thave a team with Deeney than a team with a Deeney hole in it.

If he's not on the pitch it's still an issue as we still have to pay him £65k(?) a week that we could be paying other contributing players.
I think 50% of his salary each would get us a very decent CM and CD. Much better than blowing it all on a 32 yr old budding media star.

Fair comments but this of course relies on A. gettign someone to buy/take over his contract and B. getting replacement/s in. I'd rather he be here on the payrioll contributing in a limited way than not and nothing replacing him or us having to subsidise part/all of his wage if he is not playing or elsewhere.

Simply saving his salary with no replacement doesn't seem to be a sensible option unless we have salaray cap issues.

Don't underestimate the atmosphere in the training ground. Think it's vital the whole squad is pushing in the same direction, whether they're involved or not.

And if we're not planning on using him whatsoever, we may as well pay up his contract and release him.

We already have his replacement in Murray.
The only justification for keeping him would be if we really think that his contribution will make the difference between promotion or staying in the champ. And that his contribution will be more important than strengthening other areas of the pitch.
But yes, we might end up having no choice but to keep him.
We may end up loaning him to the prem but having to cover some of his salary which would be crazy but not impossible....

Look at you all jumping on the hating Deeney band wagon. Makes me sick. I, and a few other notable fellow posters, have hated him for years and well before it was fashionable

Might have been key hole sugery which doesn't take that long to recover from if treated correctly..

Mind you with our medical team record that seems unlikely.

Pretty sad watching a club legend whoring himself out while all (or 75-90% based on the poll) the fans will him to leave. Not the ending anyone would have wanted.

It's noticeable all the 30+ year old players who will be in the squad on Friday have good characters and attitudes: Foster Cathcart Dawson Cleverley and Murray are all good eggs and good mentors for our new generation. The only slight question mark is Dawson cos he under performed in the championship 2 seasons ago. Troy simply does not fit this profile. But there will definitely be a club for him somewhere, it just depends on finances. He's always said he wants to play for Birmingham which I guess would be the fall back position. A free transfer to Brum on a 2 year contract with us making up the shortfall in wages would make sense for all parties as a worst case scenario.

You say that but has a former teammate ever spoken out about Troy being a negative influence?

I thought the section of the 'Troy Story ' documentary that covered the Mazzarri era was quite revealing.

That was part of the 18 months when Troy said publically he didnt care about football. We paid Troy over £5m to be our captain, leader and goalscorer during the period he 'didn't care about football'.

Got to be honest I’m really partial to a bit of minestrone! Really like a nice scotch broth too.
