Extrapolating from that graph puts us on 70 points at the end of the season. Doesn't sound too bad does it?

Yes we did, so the 15-16 graph on the comparable fixtures goes from 3 points after the Liverpool game to 4 points after the Bournemouth game. The 3 points we took was from the equivalent fixture of Brighton at Home ( I can’t remember off the top of my head which team I used for Brighton, but obviously one of the relegated ones)

    Oh the optimism of youth.

Clearly the extrapolation is to between 69 and 70 points. 69.66recurring to be precise.

So I think we should remain cautious and target 69 points rather than over stretch and target 70. ;-)

Can a recurring figure ever be precise?

Goal difference is worth nothing until it becomes active through two teams having the same points. At that point it becomes worth an unspecific number between 0.01 points and 0.99 points.

    Final word on the matter.

At the rate quoted above we will be safe after 22 games which is Jan 1st away to Man City, what a way to celebrate the New Year, would give us a 16 game buffer if things don't go according to schedule!

Not quite. Goal difference is worth nothing until two or more teams finish on level points. Then it is worth no points but does determine ranking - unless two teams have identical goal differences which then goes to goals scored. In exceptional circumstances where the goal difference is the determinant of relegation then it is equavalent to one point but is probably worth over £100 million :)

If you forget about relegations then goal difference is worth about a million a place!

Interesting , I work with data for my job and have learnt never to believe any projections from graphs, however in this case I firmly believe the projection and expect us to be safe by January.

Also interesting shows we have never really been that close to relegation in either of the previous 2 years , let’s hope that trend continues this year

    Correct.
Another bug of mine is the "away goals count double". No it doesn't. Ever. Otherwise a 2-0 home win and 1-4 away defeat would leave sides level.
When scores are truly level the team with highest away goals goes through. They don't count double. Why do commentators say that ?

They only say it in European knockout or other knockout competitions where they do indeed count double .

Or 0.001 and 0.999 points to be more accurate.
Or 0.0001 and 0.9999 points to be even more accurate.
    Et cetera, ad nauseum.

    That makes sense.

So in a match with your closest league rivals, would a win be worth between 6.0001 and 6.9999 points?

Except that they don't do they??!!! Win 2-0 at home and lose 3-6 away and you go out 5-6, not through 8-6. It's just the case that the team with most away goals go through if tied but the away goals are never doubled.

    David - I apologise.

I seem to have orchestrated a complete highjacking of your excellent thread with the simple barely-witty throwaway comment of "69.66 recurring to be precise". I never knew there were so many Watford fans out there even more anal than me. Do get us back on track after the West Brom result.

Frankly it’s a disgrace. This post was intended as serious antidote to the tomfoolery of this forum. Sadly it has now succumbed as so many posts do. You guys are just lucky my love of graphs exceeds the anger that has been growing inside me as irreverent point after irreverent point has been made.

    Dear David,

In response, I have to say you've only got yourself to blame..

I mean, how serious can the antidote be when you forget your slide rule AND rule(r), you go on holiday when the season opens (a hanging offence in my day), AND somehow allow invading aliens to infiltrate your graphs?

Yah boo, poor show, tish tish etc
    Keep up the good work.
    Love and kisses,
    Tom Foolery

    :p

PS. And do you mean irreverent point or irrelevant decimal point (recurring)?
    Just asking ..

A good point away to WBA there, one more point to safety!

    The current position is:
    • 4 points better than this time last year (12 vs 8). This is the same as after the last game
    • 8 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (12 vs 4). This is 1 better than after the last game.
    • 5 points better than the '40 point' line (12 vs 7). This is 1 worse than after the last game.
