You can make more money buying and selling Ferraris than you can Skodas, even in January if you know where to look.

Qualify for Europe and not only does it push up player's values but also the club's ... it's also a big pull for attracting fresh talent.

I was hoping for a point there but never mind... the graphs still looks good... particularly the one with comparable fixtures.

    The current position is:
    • 3 points better than this time last year (15 vs 12). This is 1 worse than after the last game.
    • 11 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (15 vs 4). This is the same as after the last game
    • 6 points better than the '40 point' line (15 vs 9). This is 1 worse than after the last game.

Disappointing result, but I half expected it as we never do well against Stoke at home.

    The current position is:
    • The same as this time last year (15 vs 15). This is 3 worse than after the last game.
    • 11 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (15 vs 4). This is the same as after the last game
    • 4 points better than the '40 point' line (15 vs 11). This is 2 worse than after the last game.[IMG][IMG]

My goodness that was galling. I've not been this disappointed or a long time. The Chelsea game was annoying, but they have strikers that will punish you. The Stoke game was annoying, but we knew what their game plan would be and couldn't beat it. Today - we threw away 3 points, simple as.

I'm not expecting many likes for this post :(

    Ha,ha,ha!

Statistically we are the same as with Wally, and one worse off than with QSF. But statistics don't tell the whole story.

I would certainly never keep Wally!!! I stopped caring at the end of last season which has never happened to me before in 30 years of supporting Watford (even when we were in the 3rd division).

That's what's so annoying - I have hope now!!! Sounds like Gray played okay today which bodes well. But we are still weak upfront, and clearly our defense is not up to it at the moment.

Are we not 11 points better off that against the comparable teams last year and 3 better than 15/16?

edit, yep you said that, got distracted by the pretty pictures.

    • 13 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (18 vs 5). This is 2 better than after the last game.
    • 5 points better than the '40 point' line (18 vs 13). This is 2 better than after the last game.

So still equal with Wally...how do we compare to QSF?

  12. Davidmsawyer

QSf is the dotted blue line, so 2 better I think looking at the graph. But QSF had a purple patch in a game or so. But obviously both tailed off at the end of the season.

Very encouraging to see such a big difference in points vs the same opponents compared to last season - but where did you get the 5 points from? Obviously we didn't play Brighton in 2016/17.

Another heartening statistic is that this season we have a 100% record in fixtures we played up to this point last year - beat Arsenal at home, and Southampton and Swansea away and the latter two we were a bit unfortunate to even draw last season.

I substitute the promoted teams with relegated teams. So as Brighton were 2nd placed I use the results against Boro (2nd best of relegated teams)

Up to you of course as it's your thread but I would personally leave out the promoted teams as you'd expect them as a whole to do better than the relegated ones. Still, a 0-0 draw against a Brighton side just one place below us after playing with ten men for over an hour is a definite improvement on a 0-0 draw against Boro!

We've had a good debate about how to interpret these charts when they were first created. Do catch up. This thread is just right the way it is. (although I did quite like the hand drawn ones from holiday best)

Useful 3 points before a tricky couple of games. The comparable picture graph is just looking crazy!

    The current position is:
    • 3 points better than this time last year (21 vs 18). This is 3 points better than after the last game.
    • 16 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (21 vs 5). This is 3 points better than after the last game.
    • 7 points better than the '40 point' line (21 vs 14). This is 2 points better than after the last game.

Don't want to sound pessimistic but I'm sure that around a year ago we were saying the same compared to QSF season

The above is not to take away what we have achieved and the difference is these results don't feel lucky, or particularly unexpected. If anything we should have at least 2 points more from chelsea and everton

With games against Man Utd, Spurs, Burnley, Palace, Huddersfield, Brighton, Leicester and Swansea to come between now and the new year what do people think is a realistic points target to aim for by January 1? I reckon 10+ would be very satisfactory

Up until the end of the year I think 12 will be about right. The next 3 are the toughest obviously; Man Utd could go either way, Spurs I expect us to lose, and as for Burnley if we score first then that would be great. I can see us getting 3-4 wins out of the games after Burnley.

Very optimistic 20, but I think around 15 could be quite realistic on current form.

I think anywhere between 10-17 points is realistic up until the new year. Hopefully it’s more towards the 17 point total than the 10.

As always I really like these graphs. They show how good (in Premier League terms) QSF was. I reckon we are having a pretty good season under Silva but QSF's record was pretty comparable. It also shows how bad really Mazz was - although on straight games played at this stage all three managers have similar points gained, when you look at the comparable teams played Mazz falls way behind.
It also shows that we do not really perform very well going into and after Christmas and the New Year. Let's hope this year will turn that around.
