Will be very glad when Rooney retires so we don't just have to pick a team around him just because of his name

As for squad overall in what other sport going into a major tournament would you risk picking players who are not fully match fit

Maybe he's picked because he consistently scores goals for England?

Against San Marino and all that ilk. His scoring record in tournaments is abysmal, hopefully this will be his last.

But he's a midfielder now right?

    in world cups its abysmal

In Euros his scored 5 in 6 games
    http://englandstats.com/players.php?pid=1126

His record under Roy is better than 1 in 2 which is pretty impressive at any level, let alone international level

    & we didn't qualify in 2008

and he scored 1 in 2 in 2012

Which ever way you want to play it down 5 in 6 starts in the euros is a good record

Why is it a relevant statistic anyway? Is the attempt to show that he tries harder at the Euros?

And in any case, isn't he a midfielder now? After all, his club prefer a 18 year old rookie up front.

The stat proves that he hasn't been abysmal in the Euros as it was suggested.

I'm always fascinated to hear who everyone would ahve picked in place of Rooney over the last 10 years, Bent ? Ricketts ? Crouch ? Vassell ? Carroll ? or erm someone else

My original point was not about the worth of Rooney as a player..... rather the fact that because he is who is he will be picked because of who is rather than what he has become. Still worthy of a place deeper but now behind Vardy and Kane

Roy has picked Rooney as his captain so seemedly will play come what may

Will he be brave enough to take him off and end his career as GT did with Lineker and has been pilloried ever since

Rooney did a goal against Australia, so therefore he is a goalscorererer and good at footballs and should go and we will do the winning

To be fair, Australia are a good side and well worth their possession and attempts on goal dominance.

Since they lost to Jordan, they smashed Tajikistan and Bangladesh.

The perfect night for Roy with Rashford and Rooney scoring (and Sturridge injured) as he can justify taking both.

A good night for England considering we have some great attacking competition.

Rooney will go because he is versatile, he is the captain, and he has been better over the last couple of months than Barkley.

I think it's a shame that Townsend didn't get more of a chance.

I'd leave Barkley, Sturridge and Delph at home.

So he leaves the midfielder who had the most successful season and who is **** loads better than fecking Henderson, Milner Barkley etc at home. Townsend looked pretty good when he came on the other day and pretty much plays well in an England shirt, also left out. Nice one Wroy!

After these friendlies, I would have left out two of Henderson, Townsend, Barkley or Sturridge.

Given that he's been slightly less biased towards big teams recently, it has surprised me that he's dropped Drinkwater. If we have an injury at centre back, Dier will most likely have to step into that position and that leaves us without a natural defensive midfielder - I'm a big fan of Wilshere but I wouldn't want to see him playing DM by himself.

I'd probably have left Townsend and Henderson out. On recent performances Barkley probably doesn't deserve to go, but he's clearly got potential and I've been saying since about 2008 that we need to have a tournament where the main intention is to blood in youngsters. With Stones, Alli, Dier, Rashford, Kane, Barkley, Sterling etc, it looks like we're doing that and there's no long-term gain in leaving him out.

    My predicted line-up for Russia:

    Code:
               Hart

    Walker Smalling Cahill Rose

            Dier Wilshere
                Rooney

      Sterling Vardy
                 Kane

He may not be better than some of those players, but if he had remained at Man Utd and had that season in midfield for them finishing 1st I think it's inconceivable that Roy would have left him out. That is what grates people.

No,I'm sticking by my opinion. Drinkwater is a better player than Henderson,Milner or Barkley. Doesn't matter who he plays for

In amongst all the chat about Drinkwater/Wilshere the one who seems to quietly get away with somehow getting a place is Sterling.

If the squad was picked on form we'd have half a chance.

More nonsense from Hodgson. "Systems win you nothing. Players win you games"

Good to hear we don't need to worry about tactics and can just let our proven world class legends like Rooney win the games with their individual brilliance!

I'm surprised he didn't say, 'systems don't win you games, Nike football boots do', considering 19 of the players he selected coincidentally wear the boots made by the FA's major partner.

That's one of those statements that immediately sounds like a conspiracy theory but then begins to strike you as really rather odd. Wonder how many of them like drinking Budweiser?

Where can you go when this is the reaction from the manager to that performance against Portugal's 10 men?

"I'm not prepared to accept that we didn't play well. We looked good."

    Delusional.

I do like a good conspiracy theory, but as far as this one goes there were only a couple of controversial decisions, one of which being Danny Drinkwater who also favours Nike footwear, so for this one at least, I'm out.

I like the odd occasional Bud btw

I think that is some way off being a 'vast' improvement.
