Ability-wise, I really don’t think he is. Sadly, these days to harness that talent, you have to have good work ethic as well - and Penaranda acts like a 16yr old from Tampa on Spring Break on that front.
I wonder if he just happened to knuckle down starting from now, could he have a semi-decent career? Seemed to play well for us in the cups against lower league oppo although never got close to playing for us in the league And no, I'm not suggesting we call him back from his loan and start him!
Ridiculous that we’re giving Troy another season when we’ve got this gem waiting in the wings. This is his year. 100%.
He could learn a thing or two from Troy about making the most of your career .. Mind you so could most of our strikers !
A lot of people have written off Peñaranda. He clearly has ability (which he showed at Granada and at the U-20 World Cup in 2017 when Venezuela reached the final). Unfortunately, he seems to have an attitude problem and he has admitted that he is immature. I get the impression that he has not been managed very well because so many loans (especially to countries such as Belgium and Bulgaria where the language would have been an issue) can not have helped his development. Perhaps he will feel more comfortable after returning to Spain on loan at UD Las Palmas. I know that one should not read too much into preseason games, but yesterday he played well for Las Palmas in their 3-2 victory over a fairly strong Wolves team at Marbella. He was very involved in the game (although playing mostly on the left wing) and his performance was reminiscent of how he played for Granada and at the U-20 World Cup. A save by Sá from Peñaranda resulted in Garcia scoring the first goal for Las Palmas. A few minutes later Peñaranda scored their second goal in a breakaway after turning Neves inside out.
Ha ha, Very funny! I suspect that a failure to adequately learn English may be one of his issues. He will probably sink back to mediocrity after a promising start at Las Palmas, but there is talent there if someone can unlock it. He is not a very disciplined player and seems to have been given almost a free role in the other preseason friendlies of Las Palmas against Español and Sevilla. Here is a YouTube video of his contribution to the victory against Wolves:
Penaranda now playing for Las Palmas in the beach resort of Gran Canaria? Yeah I imagine that’s where’s he’s really gonna knuckle down and focus on his career.
Let us wait and see what happens - rather than immediately write him off once more. You are probably right, but he may surprise us if he is happy in his surroundings and Pepe Mel knows how to handle him. He seems to have started well and appears to have made a good impression on the local media. He is a frustrating player (who clearly has talent but has not consistently shown it), but he only turned 24 on 31st May so there is probably still sufficient time to turn around his career if he can improve his attitude and application.
Not with us there isn’t. There seems to be this desire to endlessly give players chance after chance with us just because they are under contract. If he goes and does well there, good for him - but we are in the PL and they are in the Spanish second division. His time with us has been a disaster. I don’t think he can do anything to turn around his future with us at this point and he’s there because no one will give us any money for him. Simple as that.
Nice goal but looked knackered at the end of that run. He may still need work on fitness. The story on his has been that he doesn't put the work in. If he'd do that, he could be top class. People grow up at different times. I'm not giving it much more that a 10% chance, but hopefully he's about to.
Looks like he played well and hasn't really had a good start in any of his other loans so here's to hoping for the fifth time that this is when he finally fulfils some promise. Having said that, for the first goal they scored, he was played in on goal with a great chance to open his account for his new team and decided to try a comedy dummy of the keeper then hit it straight at him and was pretty lucky it fell to a team mate. I think that sums him up really. Probably great in a kick about, loads of talent but will never amount to much in the higher levels of the professional game as just makes silly decisions.
I do not disagree that his chance to play for Watford has probably finished, but I think that it is not without possibility that he may come good somewhere else. He has played well in preseason fixtures against two La Liga teams and a PL team. He needs to play regularly, although his performances may fade in the Segunda Liga. However, there is a tendency for some of our supporters to write off players too quickly. For example, I remember how Deeney was criticized in his first season when he joined Watford and some fans did not rate Richarlison during the second part of his only season at Watford, but both have developed considerably. I realize that the situation with Peñaranda is different because he has been given plenty of opportunities to shine (although generally on loan) and not taken them, but the policy to keep sending him out on loan (especially to places such as Belgium and Bulgaria) has not helped.
If he has a decent season, I wonder if he could do a job for us in the Championship if we get relegated?
Come on people. He'll have a year on his deal after this season, either he has a good season and gets sold or he has a **** season and gets sold.
Or - as is more likely - he has a **** season, then returns and is loaned out again or sits around like a bad smell for another 12 months.
The Pozzos gamble on young players, but they're generally not stupid. Aside from giving in to Silva on Gray, they've not thrown around a bunch of large contracts on crap players. Long contracts, yes - but that gives you negotiating leverage if the players want to leave. We see the impact of NOT having that with Hughes and Chalobah. So, if Penaranda has a good first half - expect some action in January. Either a year or two on his deal, or to sell him before they lose the leverage. If he does his typical disappearing act, he'll eventually fark off on a free when his deal runs out.
How are we blaming Silva for Gray? Silva wanted Slimani and we brought him Gray. There is valid criticism to be directed at Silva but he quickly identified that Deeney is ******* awful and that we needed and actual striker and we stuck him with Deeney and Gray.
Slimani got us a few million in compensation from Everton despite never actually playing for us. Gray costs us a few million for every miserable appearance.
Wouldn't mind a years loan to Ibiza meself. Faff about with a ball a few times a week, get left on the bench for games and on the lash every other night. Would suit Alberto down to the ground I'd imagine.
