I'm not convinced he's good enough for the Prem, but I could be wrong and he's probably worth a punt at that price, especially if Hughes and/or Chabs are offski.
Said many times on here that I'm not convinced by him, but if we sell Hughes, getting Yokuslu and Grimes in for £4m would be great business
Would look like a relegation CM to me. Don’t get the fuss about either of them. The Turkish lad seems very so-so and I’m not sure why either majority seem desperate to have him. And I don’t think Grimes is good enough for the PL. If we played any team this season who had those 2 in CM, I’d be thinking we should be getting at them.
Sell Hughes get in Thorsby and Ferguson &/or Doig. As soon as possible so this rather shambolic preseason can end more positively.

But two players who would likely play for us next season in championship. Probably a good move. Deeney and Gray horrific contracts gone, sell Sarr to cover the cracks and it’s a solid place the rebuild? It’s where we are due to previous financial mismanagement unfortunately. Still will have Cathcart and Success due to idiotic extensions but would be in a better place. Edit: and let’s not forget Sema, Cleverley and Fletcher on their bumper deals.
Assuming he doesn't sign that years extension attached to his current deal. I'd rather worry about signing players for the Championship as and when we find ourselves there. This summer is about signing players of PL quality IMO an who are better than what we have.
Need to get this sorted this week or by no later Monday of next week. Don’t care if it’s Grimes, Yokuşlu, Thorsby. We need a better CM. If it’s true that Grimes is available for £1.5mil and Yokuşlu is available at £2.5mil, then sign both. Hughes can then get the move he wants. Gosling can be shipped out on loan/sold And if Chalobah decides to leave, we will be ok.
Not as far as I know. This is the last year of his last extension - and one of the clauses when that was signed is that there is a years option next summer.
Then I’m leaning towards giving Hughes anything extra we can to get him to ignore the clause(s) he obviously doesn’t like. And Chalobah. I’d rather have them than Okay and Grimes. Use whatever transfer money you’d spend buying them on those extra wages or whatever. Or put it towards a CB/Lookman loan.
I can't imagine there is a massive pool of players available on free transfers happy to accept ***** wages and a 50% relegation clauses. Its why are picking up the total down-and-outs and gambling they can turn their careers around. Don't really understand why we aren't making better use of the loan market as you can pick up some PL quality players without spending a fortune in the event we are relegated.
In a perfect world. But I’d rather use the whole timeframe of the window to get it right, rather than making poor deals just because of some self-imposed arbitrary deadline.
I don’t disagree. But I also think we are all jumping the gun on being so certain that it’s the relegation clause that’s causing this. It could be any number of things yet we are talking like it’s factual that it’s this one specific clause.
if Okay is available for circa £2.5m and his wages are reasonable I don't think that is bad business to be fair. He is a slightly limited player but our midfield looks seriously lightweight at the moment and I can't see many better cheap, destructive players on the market. Grimes is a Norwich-esque signing. Its excellent value for money and would future proof us for next year, while not being good enough to play regularly and keep us up this year.
If added to what we already have, then they add okay depth - but if they are the replacements for Chalobah and Hughes, I think its awful business, irrespective of what they would cost.
I wasn't just talking about Hughes there - I was just talking more generally. I suspect the second we start demanding 50% relegation clauses I imagine it would put off the majority of players.
Yeah - if they both came in as the Hughes/Chalobah replacements that is awful. Chalobah is still a bit gamble to me - he looks to be on an upwards trajectory but he has only been in form for a few months in the last 4 years. If we lose Hughes we need to spend to replace him. Neither Grimes or Okay are of the calibre to replace him IMO.
Didn't want this clown last season in the Championship why on Earth do people think he'll be ok in a league above.
I suspect the club have done their homework on this though - if the majority of (attainable) players would turn us down over it, I doubt we would be pushing it at the level we are. But I do agree it would be a sticking point for some. I just think the club can be more sensible and set the figure lower personally.
I will say the same back (not sarcastically), in a perfect world, we could wait. With our owners, the more we wait, the worse the options become. We won’t find better players for the prices that are being reported. It works both ways. Sign the players now, have a more settled squad going into the first game, team will be use to each other. The risk, we may miss out on some amazing potential deals in the last week. Sign the players later, we may pick up some potential bargains as bigger clubs are desperate to balance the books. The risk, the squad isn’t quite good enough for the first few games, then we have introduce the new signing(s) slowly (we don’t, but that’s what we do), the potential bargains choose other clubs over us and we’re left with the dregs of CM’s. With the start of the season we have, we need to hit the ground running in my opinion. Got a great opportunity to pick up some much needed early points. I would agree with you if we had Norwich’s opening games. With our opening games, the first 7 games are all winnable. Can’t waste them. Need the team to have as much time together as possible. Don’t need any distractions. That’s why I would rather get it all done within the next week.
Yeah - I dont have any issue with the club trying to put provisions in to make relegation less catastrophic. I just have an issue if demanding certain clauses in the contract makes relegation an inevitability by virtue of only being able to attract and retain dross.
Grimes would be a poor signing. Not convinced he is up to the prem nor do I think he could grow into the role. Yokuslu would probably do a job. Either way I think we need to get a decent CM and CB pronto.
I can't see us spending big money on a midfielder. Should have got him when his contract was running down but he's since signed a new one I think.
I think I've made extremely clear about 100+ times that I'm not. I'm asking why you're bringing him up specifically.
Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we go back in for him. Think he’s someone that the club have liked for a long time, would suit Edwards system, Swansea need the money according to their fans and he’s got enough about him to help us in the Prem if we got promoted.
