Listening to their caretaker talking post-match you'd have thought Wilder had died suddenly rather than just reached the end of the road and left.

Idly watching the Everton v Burnley game on Saturday and still revelling in the aftermath of our glorious 94th minute winner, I heard this classic snippet of commentary: "Godfrey and Virginia have got into a right mix-up which very nearly lets Vydra in!". It only brought up one image in my mind...

I'm terribly sorry Captain Ancelotti, can I be excused please?

    And Billy Sharp.

Relying on the likes of him ahead of expensive signings probably cost Wilder his job.

Seems like Wilder was dead man walking for a while and he wasn’t sacked just due to the results.

    Lamela's goal was superb.

Problem is that he does that because he is so one footed. Really high hopes for him as a player a few years ago but has flattered to deceive. Injuries have not helped but his mentality is not there. Does not impose himself on games, does something good then something bad. The technical ability is there but he just cannot put it together. Concerned Palacios at Leverkusen is going the same way. Bosz hardly picks him despite his talent. A poor career move really.

A couple of things that did strike me from the derby were the use of VAR again and players clutching their faces. Oliver apparently asked for VAR to confirm it was a reckless challenge from Sanchez. Why are the VAR officials not just looking at the incident as a whole ? If they had watched it slowed down the ball is gone and screamerzette's momentum carries his leg into the Colombian. How is it a foul ? Do these officials lack common sense ? Their intepretations and use of VAR are making a mockery of it again.

Lamela when he struck Tierney was not even looking at him. Just held the arm out to hold him off. On the replay his hand contacts the upper sternum. But Tierney does down clutching his face. So many players do this now. It needs to be stamped out. Retrospective punishment.

That's not how VAR works. Oliver gives the penalty and then explains his rationale to the VAR, who then looks for evidence of a clear and obvious error.

Anywhere else on the pitch it's given as a foul by Sanchez and no one bats an eyelid. I certainly don't see how the fact the ball was gone is remotely relevant.

To sum the decision up have heard 3-4 different former refs have their say and the opinion was split between was it a penalty or not .

So really we have gone down the subjective /is it a clear and obvious error route again.

First case of an offside not being given straight away causing a serous injury ?

Hope the Wolves the goalie is ok.

As an aside, how’s that a concussion sub? I thought the idea was to ensure the borderline cases where a player with a knock on the noggin who thinks he’s Shergar running in the Derby gets hauled off, not a chap who quite clearly wouldn’t have continued under any circumstances.

Good point and Liverpool got to make an extra sub too.

If that was earlier in the game would they be allowed to do so ?

    Could be the deciding factor.

I’m surprised they went out so embarrassingly as he loves a cup to keep his record going.

    £15m a year contract wasn’t he? Madness.

Maybe if he wins the League cup that might saved him for a bit.

Fulham bottled it tonight. I'll be very surprised if the current bottom 3 aren't the final bottom 3 now. Shame, as I'd have loved to have seen Newcastle relegated again.

Maybe but he deserves a chance I'd say for his improvement and for Bielsa's work with him.
    Yes I agree.

True - close call between him and Watkins.

DCL gets in as he is good in the air.

Of course they are all back ups to Kane so Spurs going out of competitions early will be good from an England point of view I guess.

Steve Bruce seems to get more support than most managers in the media .

There tends to be excuses made for him like they have injured players or those picked don’t perform.

    And the Mike Ashley factor.

The Geordies were wildly celebrating Leeds' result until just after 20h00 last night. This was posted on one the the 'fishal' sites:

I can’t see Newcastle getting relegated... because surely they’ll sack a Bruce eventually, or is that simply not going to happen? Don’t know enough about the situation but he’d have been a gonner long ago at the vast majority of clubs.

Here is hoping that Leicester and Sheffield United win today. Was hoping Everton might do the business yesterday as well but what can you do ? Just over £400M of players sitting on the bench. Bald fraud lauded and applauded again. Would love to see him manage Sheffield United and see well how he would do.

Otherwise we could be facing a situation with just Southampton left in who I would back. No doubt the BBC will be hoping for an all Mancunian semifinal or final they can wet themselves over. Gareth Titgate refuses to pick Bamford still despite his earlier proclamations in his tenure of picking players on form. Jesse Orcface still manages to get into the side ?

Boooooo. Had Sheffield United played like this during the league season they would not be facing relegation. But it also highlighted their lack of quality in the final third. McGoldrick how did he miss. Brewster so close as well. Infuriating. Hope Chavsea play Abu Dhabi. Did the Blades players down tools like ours this season. Perhaps they thought they deserved more money for staying up ? There were persistent rumours of an unhappy camp and players like Lundstram wanting away.

West Ham scored all 5 goals in a 3-2 game so far.

Moyes will be fuming if they throw this away.

    He usually is anyway!

    Classic game of 2 halves?

Sounds like West Ham had a good chance to go 4-2 up but the ref gave a free kick rather than playing advantage which won't go down well.
