Seems to be very knee-centric training he’s doing so I doubt he’s been told he can’t train with the team and is probably part of a specific rehab programme I’d guess.

Walsall are so going to hate us when he goes on loan to West Brom for a year then leaves on a free.

I assume they dislike West Brom enough at the best of times?

Unless he’s at a specialist physio or one recommended by a surgeon? Not unusual I don’t think in football.

I also noted the link to Ivan Toney yesterday - Deeney’s best mate is Toney’s manager/agent.

Troy backed Toney for back-to-back EFL golden boots on his IG yesterday.

Telegraph now reporting we're going to send Troy out on loan for a year and then bring him back if we get promoted.

Makes no sense at any level - get rid for the Champ, where he might be vaguely useful, if distracting, and resign for PL, where we know he’s gash (and even older by then)?
    Insane.

I doubt that’s true - even so, talking as if it is for a second...how many other clubs think ‘let’s send our captain out on loan whilst we try for promotion’? Such a weird tactic.

But I’ve said it a few times this summer - I can see him getting a contract extension. I think the club are terrified of losing him.

Unless he agrees to reduced wages (which I doubt) then that would make no sense at all.

I can understand loaning him out for the final year of his contract as getting a loan fee of £1m or so and saving £100k a week is better than demanding a bigger fee up front and then being stuck with him on that fat salary in the Championship.

Why wouldn’t it? Same terms, WBA or some other PL club subsidise the wage for a season and the option to move for free in a year if we aren’t promoted - held to the contract if we are with a potential small pay increase...although I doubt he’s looking for one as he’s paid handsomely as it is and I’m sure he knows that he’s probably paid beyond his ability anyway. I’d also add he’s not on 100k a week and that’s always been a red herring.

It’s nothing I would do at all, don’t get me wrong. But it wouldn’t be a hard deal to set up and I wouldn’t put it past us.

I am told he is on that much and trust that information. It’s a gross amount of money for anyone really, but even in the mad context of football it’s far too much for someone of his ability. Offering him more would be silly.

The scenario you’ve set out makes sense if a) we go back up or b) Troy plays well on loan for a year.
Imagine though we extend his deal two years and bump it up 10% to £110k pw, then he goes to WBA and has a stinker of a season, while Watford miss out on promotion.
We’re then in the Championship, with a single player taking up a huge proportion of what we could afford as our annual wage bill and nobody in their right minds would contemplate taking him off us.

I think the decision makers will be looking at the finances and see Troy as a potential big saving if we can shift him.

He’s on 72k a week and that’s pretty widely available info...whether bonuses take it beyond that, who knows. But he certainly isn’t on 100k a week basic - no one at the club is. Deeney isn’t the highest paid player at the club which is another misconception.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying except for the figures banded around as I know them to be wrong. I have said at length over the past 12-18 months that it’s time for him to go. But I don’t trust the club in that regard.

As for your last paragraph, you’ve got more faith in them than me. Yet to see evidence that would allow me to put such faith in them.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any point here:

If we sell him against his wishes then we would have to stump up a proportion of his remaining salary to him, so any sale will make will mostly get returned to him plus we would have to give Walsall 25%.

If we loan him, we receive a loan fee and the club he plays for will pay a percentage of his wages, the loan fee may cover some or all of the proportion of his wages not covered by the borrowing club.

If we keep him, his contract will wind down but we pay 100% of his wages.

Of those 3 possibilities the loan out option is the greatest money saver.

We can't sell him against his will he would have to agree to the move, you did ask to be corrected.

Worded wrong, if you want to sell a player who's not actively looking for a move then I think what I wrote applies.

Option 4: The club keep him and he takes a pay cut in line with the rest of the squad out of respect for the club who have treated him well and gave him a second chance all those years ago.

(Not an option I’d exercise - but the bet it’s been considered)

Okay, you think he’s on £72k, I think he’s on £100k. That’s fine - we can agree he’s on too much?

They’ve made some poor decisions but we’ve been on an upward trajectory since the Pozzo’s came in, so you understand them spending big money to tie down our (at the time) best player. It was a signal of intent and he was the player we built around. This year is the first time really that they’ve been in charge of the club while on the slide. We can only guess at their cost cutting measures but the word from Leventhal seems to suggest we’re happy for him to leave, which I doubt we would be if he were on a more modest wage.

It does. If a player asks to leave, they give up certain financial incentives. But a leaving player who hasn’t asked to leave will take a payment (usually a percentage of their remaining contract) worded as a loyalty bonus.

Do we know, or reckon, he has a relegation clause in his contract. That of course would minimise the blow, but I can't help thinking he hasn't if the club are trying to loan him out as is rumoured.

Except I don’t ‘think’ he’s on 72k, I know he is ;) the player himself has long denied the story he’s on 100k...but yes we can agree he’s on too much.

While I agree the finances are an element of why we (May) want him to leave, I don’t think they are the whole picture. I imagine they may finally recognise he is an obstruction to other strikers pathway to the team too - but the negative (for them) will be losing his leadership. And that’s their own fault for not creating a succession plan for the captaincy.

But there’s a whole bunch of factors at play - I think it results in the opinion that any move would be put to him and accepted and left to him to decide. But all this stuff about ‘offering him’ around and wanting him out - I don’t buy that. I think they’d keep him around quite happily too but are willing at last to contemplate him leaving.

The rumour is that he is one of the few who don’t have a clause in his deal. Must admit as long standing captain and someone who came up through the lower leagues, I’m very surprised if that’s true.
