To be fair, Palace signing a 39 year old Kev Phillips worked okay for them, unfortunately for us. Back up striker, (very) experienced, got double figures in the PL not too long ago and won't break the bank. Decent, but not very exciting, signing.

If he’s joining us to be our number one striker and play most matches, I’d be concerned. That’s unlikely though eh.

I imagine he’s joining us as a squad player and the reason for the signing is to bring some valuable experience to a squad that very soon seems about to lose a whole heap of that.

He could have a useful role to play and much to teach the likes of Suarez, Pedro and our other young guns in training. Could be an ok impact sub too.

Makes sense and will cover the loss of GD, it's pretty much a like-for-like.

I'm with you Malteser, that's pretty much how I see him as well, he could be a shrewd inexpensive move IMO.

He's a good player. I think we will be pinning hopes on Suarez but remember we are in the championship and we now have a proven goalscorer on the bench. Could be much worse, we wanted a proven finisher and now we have one...what's the problem!?

Not a bad option though... Everyone needs a Lambert/Murray/Phillips

But - and I’m not saying I’m right here - why would he join us at this stage in his career to play that role? Can likely get more regular football elsewhere surely. Can’t see how we’ve sold him a move on ‘you won’t play much at all - but you’ll help bring our young’uns on for a bit’...

I’m all for giving players a chance. But this one is completely lost on me.

Or perhaps we are going to cash in on Suarez too ?

Strange signing but mightn't work out too bad. Hopefully it is as well as Perica as opposed to instead of him.

Suarez, Perica, Gray and Murray would be decent for attacking options.

If that's true, this signing would be horrendous I agree.

Also Danny Graham's knees have gone

"we'll sign you and you can fight for your place" I'd imagine.

If he's starting every week then it means he's playing well, if he's on the bench then he's a decent option at this level.

How on earth did the Pozzo network unearth a gem like this?

Seriously though, he's a professional with plenty of experience. He'll get goals too, maybe not as many as he used to but he does offer a certain style of football which gives us some flexibility up front. Doubt he'll be a starter but long season ahead. At least none of us will have to worry about effort with him either unlike some of the other turds at this club.

Guess that means Deeney is definitely off

I imagine the decision makers will also have Cucho on their mind when signing attackers this season.

Murray makes sense as a stop-gap for a season (or 6 months) until Cucho comes in.

The season is 46 games long. Plus the cups. Maybe the play offs too.

The season is a month shorter than usual.

    There are 13 midweek fixtures.

    It’s going to be brutal.

Squad depth will matter more than ever.

A good deep squad will be especially beneficial at the turn of the calendar year when smaller squads will start suffering from fatigue.

We are about to sign a very experienced striker. Homegrown. Played all his career here.

We will be adding experience to what we all think will be a much younger squad next season.

Losing Deeney, Capoue, Doucoure etc means losing around 1.000 games worth of experience.

He’s only coming on loan. To do a job to help us try to win promotion.

He’s not an unknown Udinese misfit, which seems to have been the main complaint so far about most of our other transfer plans.

I suspect several other clubs in the Championship will view this as a decent bit of business for us.

I think he'll be an excellent signing. Forget his age, he is a top player for the Championship. He'll not have the legs for 90 minutes week in, week out, so will take a place on the bench and is a proven option to bring on when we need something different.

We'll need options as it's a long, long season. Must mean Deeney and Welbeck are certainly gone, but I think Murray for a one-off bounce back season will be a very shrewd move indeed.

But I'll reserve the right to boo him (once only) for handling Pereyra's goal bound freekick in the first match last season. Had that gone in.....the season could have been all so different. :D

I suppose the most charitable thing I can say about this is that he might be up to the job at Championship level and last season might have just been a blip.

I'm certainly not enthused if it turns out to be true, though.

One of our English players must be off - Isn't there a quota for HG players in match day squads?

Billy Sharp, Danny Graham, Pablo Hernandez, Wayne Rooney, Leon Clarke, Lloyd Dyer, Yann Kermogant, Paul Gallagher, Wes Hoolahan, Aaron Wilbraham, Bobby Zamora, Kevin Phillips, Helguson and Glenn Murray himself have all performed well in recent years in the Championship despite being beyond their peak years.

Is Cucho thought of as a striker or a winger though? Genuinely shocked by this, I thought our signings up front were sorted after Perica came in, that 3 'first choice' strikers (Suarez, Perica, Gray, minus Deeney who might be off) would be fine

I vividly remember watching a Brighton game on TV where Murray was through on goal about 40 yards out with no defenders anywhere near him and he had to turn around and spend ages holding the ball up for a teammate because he knew he was too slow to get into a scoring position without a defender catching up with him. This was over two years ago.

The hierarchy have learned absolutely nothing.

    What an abysmal, abysmal signing.

If this is the replacement for Deeney (should he leave), it would literally sum up our **** recruitment for the last five years.

If he's just a bench option, not on a large wage, and Deeney still leaves, then I'm not that bothered by this.

Even if he's way passed his best, my general impression of him is of having a good attitude and excellent work-rate.
