PS stop showing off with the "I'd have" marlarkies. That alone won't get you on University Challenge you know.

On second thoughts... I feel bad about giving Deeney grief after seeing this

At least he is in pink otherwise if in white I would refer to the description of a (small) white elephant as someone or thing being a costly possession that Is out of proportion to its usefulness

Fair play to him in getting over Saturdays result more quickly than some .

My guess is that he is actively trying to devalue himself down to the point where we will accept a £175,000 offer from Brum allowing him to join his chosen retirement vehicle. He will then score the goals to keep them out of the clutches of Div 1 and become a hero.

I'm sure the Birmingham wingers would be able to bounce a few crosses off him against the likes of Burton and Barnsley. He'll tear that league up:)

The use of "of" instead of "'ve" is a bit annoying - but the same can be said for all misuse of language to those who care about it.
You say you do not understand it but I think it comes from people who perhaps did not get an education in grammar and have heard the phrase would've and assumed people were actually saying would of - as that is how it sounds.
On a forum like this it is better to get the actual arguments and points made rather than win awards for grammar.

I expect it originates from children having both little education and poor enunciation and the lack of correction from the parent or teacher.
It doesn't help when the teachers say 'we was' and such like, as many in my locality do.
Not all teachers are devotees of Neville Gwynne or have a copy of Fowler's Modern English Usage to hand I fear!

The references given for the stats are per game, in which case the fact that the majorith of games he's played have been as sub. I have to assume they have not been adjusted to clarify that or the OP would be quoting goals per minute.

Can you confirm this, if it has not already been done, because per game stats will have little value as a comparison.

No wonder Sean Dyche told him to f**k off. The newest member of Little Mix. I'm sure there's a pun there with their hit song "Touch" I just can't work it out.

In relation to that key question about time actually spent on the pitch, i found these stats on Transfermarkt..

    Troy Deeney minutes per game

First season in Prem- 3,723 minutes over 43 games = 86.6 minutes per game
Last season- 3,164 minutes over 40 games = 79.1 minutes per game
This season- 719 minutes spread over 14 games = 51.3 minutes per game

This is for all games played incl cup games. So basically he has been getting somewhere around 40% less time on the pitch this season than previously.

So if those figures have not been adjusted to reflect this then.. well you do the math.. but the figures are no where near as bad as first seemed.

He’ll miss at least 18% of our games through getting suspended, so a lot of it is self inflicted.

It's not about missing games. It's about how many minutes he is on the pitch for each appearance, relating to the stats in the first post.

Slightly off topic but the ex ref on Sky seems pretty adamant Deeney had to go:

He wasn't asked about the offside goal or penalty plus Hogg's red card though.

    Dermot's verdict: Correct decision.

Dermot says: This deserved a red. Seriously I'm not joking and defending the referee here! He has just thrown himself into the challenge and I think actually he even expects a red card for this.

The speed of it, he's out of control and there is no concern for the player that he has made the tackle on. He has no grounds for argument there.

Quite. I actually think Troy has some body image issues. He seems obsessed with being portrayed as the ‘big man’ and somebody who bullies defenders. He is slow as hell, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s an athletic guy and he could easily shred a couple of stone and actually be a fast player. We all know he has more skill than he gets credit for, but that’s because he insists on being portrayed as a big lump. It’s a tragic waste really, he could be w couple of stone lighter and be a player that actually makes runs and finishes chances, but all he wants to do is basically jump up for headers for 90 minutes.

One of the advantages of good grammar is that it allows you to make your point more precisely.

    Or Deeney to QPR?

There was also this pic of TD & TC (The red card boys..) supposedly last night. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bc0NQNMHdsQ/?tagged=deeney

Looks like they were in a place called Flight Club in Bloomsbury.. a darts theme bar.
Re The footballers and alcohol thing.. ive never understood why they cant do their partying in private if they know things are going to get messy. They surely have the resources to hire somewhere private. That way they can go out in public on the less messy nights and no ones the wiser.

When I started teaching there was a saying to the effect of ' All teachers should consider themselves teachers of English'. Some teachers attempt to ingratiate themselves by resorting to the vernacular but a good number are themselves speaking in their second language to a very large (in this part of Merrie England) percentage of English-as-a-second-language pupils. Besides which the educational requirements for this country have veered away from teaching formal grammar. There have been some moves to try and rectify this.

I'm with the comments re Deeney drinking. Basically, you cannot train on beer and sweating it off anymore. However, this pic is hardly showing a night of reckless revelry.

Not at that stage no.. but i think in the other pic he's wearing the same Xmas jumper & waving a champagne bottle around.

PS he doesnt have to drink beer.. and i dare say some of the modern day players are aware enough to stick to less fattening forms of alcohol intake.
Not like Gazza though who was told to go onto wine drinking by the Lazio doctor. A week later he was pleading with him to get back on the ale!

It's not just a 'darts-themed bar', it's full of electronically linked dart boards. You go in groups, hire one by the hour, and play a variety of competitive games based on the dart scoring. Good fun, although they eventually took our darts away from us because one of us couldn't help throwing from twice as far away as you're supposed to and they thought it was 'dangerous'

What we need is Gray to start scoring...and somehow for Okaka to become friends with Silva.

Tbf if Gray had taken the three penalties we had this season he would be on about five goals which is not a bad tally.

I often try to introduce new vocabulary to children and teenagers, rather than resorting to tennis jargon.
I believe most of them appreciate it as usually people of all ages are keen to learn.
However,I will refrain from using some of the words I uttered when Deeney was dismissed, as I will probably lose my licence!

What if you apply that to the fans giving their all off the pitch? If the players put in performances like the home fans regularly do, we'd be calling them a disgrace unfit to wear the shirt.

Our support can sometimes be pretty poor but we don't get paid to support the team. Deeney allegedly on 100k a week, for that as a minimum you can expect keeping in best shape you can and giving your all whilst on the pitch.

Obviously trying to improve his hand/eye coordination, like a true pro. He's aiming to replace Karno as Gomes' backup after we sign Ronaldo, Gabbiadini or Gestede in January.
