Match fitness is nothing to do with basic cardio fitness. Being 20 or six foot five has nothing to do with it either. A professional sportsman should be able to run for 90 minutes.

Let's excuse him if he is struggling after 75 and make an allowance that perhaps he didn't have the most technically advanced training regime in Belgium, but if after four months of conditioning, he still can't run for much more than half an hour, then there's something wrong there.

You could get Jonny Vegas to four hour marathon fitness in four months of that was his full time job Ffs.

Why's that then? How often do the U21s have matches?

Boys don't stop growing until around 21. He's massive so he's almost certainly not developed stamina to go with his large frame yet.

    It'll come.

Considering his age and lack of games and fitness perhaps he should go on loan... though we would need another backup striker for that.

PS I just checked out a highlight vid of him on youtube and it was interesting looking at the comments of people before he signed for us begging him to sign for clubs such as Dortmund and Ajax, and a Bruges fan saying they wouldn't sell for less than 15mil Eur.

Nope. It's either his physiology or laziness that means he's unfit, and I can guarantee that he wouldn't be on the bench in league games if he wasn't training well.

That just leaves the simple explanation that he is not developed enough to carry such a hulking frame.

Ahhh bless him he's 19 and a big lad so he gets tired...f**k off! There are plenty of 19 year olds in the army running about with full kit on and getting shot at.

I thought he looked average and his ball control was a bit poor, what it did highlight is that we need a decent replacement should we lose Troy or Iggy.

I think Oulare looked good, some nice touches but slightly off the pace but could be expected as it was his full debut and we know players need games to show their peak performance. However was he ready for the Premier League? In thought, not quite and I think the chase will be on for that cover for the short term in this jan window.
He is refered to by Quique as a Watford project, so much like the rest of the Academy then?

You're absolutely right. QSF should start firing pot shots at him in training to get him up to speed. None of that cheapo blank ammo either, no siree.

Being fit in general and being match fit for top level football are completely different things, it's not just a matter of how far you can run on the treadmill. I would imagine they haven't given him more under 21 games because he's been needed as back up for Troy and Iggy so they didn't want to risk him.

  15. El distraído

    El distraído Johnny Foreigner

Hmm. I sort of see what you're saying, but I think it works both ways though. How's he ever going to be ready to come in as cover for Deeney or Ighalo if he's not match fit due to lack of U21 game time?

Can't imagine many will be interested in taking him on loan if he can barely last 45 minutes.

I doubt it is just pure fitness holding him back. If I were betting on it I'd think it more likely that due to his massive size there is potential for physical complications later in his career if he's run into the ground now. QSF is probably acting under advice from a sports scientist or the like. We all know the Pozzos use them and also their business relies on sell on clauses and such. Would be extremely short-sighted to knacker Oulare now for our short term aims if there's a long term picture to think of.

It was good to see this lad finally. If he turns out to be a fantastic future signing for the club, the scouts at the club have my admiration.

I was not overly impressed with Deeney or Ighalo when they first signed for the club, but with all developing players, you have to give them a chance and time to get there.

A lot is to do with characteristics and mental fibre and each player. Deeney and Ighalo are very driven individuals who get every ounce out of their god given talents. Hopefully Oulare is of the same. Let's see how far this boy can develop in a club that has improved a lot of players already. He can learn a lot from Deeney and I hope he takes him under his wing.

No matter how far we progress as a club, I cannot see a day where we can ever sign a Deeney or an Ighalo as a finished article. We have to identify raw talent, and develop it into what we see in our first choice forward line today.

If we sell Deeney and Ighalo in the summer, I'd be disappointed if we got change from £70m, and that's a fantastic profit from a combined purchase of £650k.

Oulare and the like are the future of the club and hopefully we'll be seeing a powerhouse like Lukaku in 18 months from now.

Oulare has a big future at he club IMO. He was matching, out muscling and winning balls in the air against fully experienced international and Premier League defenders on his debut.

New record for even Watford fans . Youth player has his whole career written off after 45 minutes of football.

People are really negative about this, I thought he looked good, showed promise, obviously off his game having not played for 4 months but he was doing everything that was needed of him, his first touch let him down a bit but other than that he looked promising

I'm not sure to whom you are referring, but I simply asked a question. I've not written off anyone at all.

He's young at got time on his hands, he showed glimpses of what he is capable of.

However it is evident that based on this 45 minute showing that currently he is not a suitable back up to Deeney and Ighalo, we need someone else this January as a priority.

Lots of time to coach him to be more effective in a partnership,at the moment on yesterday's 45 mins he is not a replacement striker ready for the premiership.Could only see him being thrown on in the last 15 mins when chasing a game playing with both Iggy and Deeney as a 3 up front.Very unlikely I know.

stamina does not grow on you, it comes from conditioning and as some have said, if he can't last after 5 moths of it, it is a concern

Looked like a more mobile Gifton from when he first came into the team.

Gifton would have been a top player if that **** Paul Butler hadn't wrecked his knees.

    Give the kid time.

  29. Very much this. Also, another striker would allow the kid to go out & get some games somewhere

I was quite interested in the comments above about stamina and a large build so decided to do a bit of research. Turns out that typing "large 20 year old man stamina problems" into Google won't help you understand young Obbi's problems but could lead to some awkward questions from the wife...

  31. The club get Deeneys replacement in early so he has 5 years to develop in the reserves and all you lot do is moan

He's had since August to learn Quique's system as well as learn from Troy and Iggy how to be a Premier League striker and on top of that improve physically to the demands of English football. More senior players like Ibarbo and Guedioura clearly can't do what Quique wants to an acceptable level yet so I find the criticism of a kid who has played 45 minutes for us quite pathetic.

Whilst you are absolutely right about the need to give him time, I don't think it's unreasonable, given the training and conditioning regime that he's had with us, to expect an improvement in fitness

I dont think people are criticising the kid, more that there is a concern about a seemingly unprecedented fitness issue.

    I find this thread strange.

We have some posters writing about how they are concernced that he doesn't seem to be able to last more than 45 minutes having been with us for 5 months and training with the team for the full 5 months. In my eyes there is no issue with this.

Then we have other posters slating these fans saying that they are 'writing him off' and calling them pathetic? I haven't seen anyone write off his Watford career yet, I have only seen genuine concern about his physical condition. Why must some posters on here try and start an argument?

I'm also interested by all this talk of Obbi having to 'grow into his body' etc, and that this is why he has fitness issues. On the surface, this looks like a reasonable explanation, but Benteke and Lukaku (similar build) didn't seem to have this issue? They hit the ground running in the PL (and didn't have fitness issues while they were playing in Belgium either, which Obbi clearly did, hence the warnings we received from Club Brugges fans).

I want him to succeed as much as anyone, he is clearly very talented from youtube clips, etc. and I like the idea of us having an unknown quantity which we can hopefully nurture into a great PL striker.

However I really don't think it is strange to be worried about his fitness.

That is, of course, if he was taken off for fitness reasons/looked knackered after 10 minutes. I play football myself and after a period of sustained high effort you can often look shattered in the early periods of the game but you then get a chance to recover slightly. Its possible that due to the apparent fitness issues he was being watched by some fans to see how he was coping and this made him look (wrongly) like he was shattered after 10 minutes.
