Wouter Weylandt a cyclist on the Leopard-Trek team died on a descent of the Passo del Bocco mountain in the Tour of Italy yesterday aged 26 leaving a partner, baby due in September and family. The next stage of the race will go on today but I don't think any of the riders will be racing in respect of the the rider that died. It is so sad that this has happended this is not the first death on a mountain descent lets just hope it is the last . RIP Wouter Weylandt
RIP indeed. Hopefully there won't be a massive over reaction concerining safety though. He's the first cyclist to die on one of the big tours since 1995. Road racing is a seriously dangerous sport and these guys know the risks.
I don't think they have to go over board on the safety aspect. But with all the mountains they can go up and down a second look to check them out would not go a miss as some of the descents I have seen on TV are a bit hairy.
