Being a Watford fan I always want the smaller team to win (like most of us I imagine) so when it gets to the latter stages it’s always tougher. If it was a France Brazil final I’d have no clue who I’d want to win, I can stand the media love in for Brazil, and well France are, just France. The one bigger team I’ve never for some reason disliked is The Netherlands, not sure why but always had a soft spot for them.

 

Those of us who are old enough will always have a soft spot for the Dutch because of their glorious Cruyff-inspired team of '74 (and to a lesser extent '78). At the time they were the first European team I had seen play with the flair and invention usually associated with South Americans.

 

I still can't believe they lost that final!

The Germans used to be able to spoil the party, didn't they beat the great Magyar team in '54?

 

We shouldn't forget that the Germany had a terrific team as well. Beckenbauer, Breiner and Hoeness were wonderful players, with the lethal Gerd Muller up front. Maier, Vogts, Bonhof and Overath were not shabby either.

 

No, he's still got it in for us; I think he knew what'd happen to us in the final!

 

France, Brazil and Argentina have all won this trophy twice. Do they get to keep it if they win it again?

 

Excellent question. I hope so. The current trophy could do with a revamp.

I just think most people outside of West Germany wanted the Dutch to win and they should have done.
There was a good documentary about the Dutch teams of the '70s and '80s.
I can't remember who, possibly Rep,who said they wanted to make the Germans suffer. It wasn't so long after WWII and the hatred for Germany was huge.
Probably cost them the trophy.

I know. They kept it in 1970 because that was the third time they'd won it, which is why I was wondering if the countries currently on two wins will keep the 'new' trophy if they win it for a third time. But, as @Otter correctly points out, the sausage munchers have won it three times since 1970 (74, 90 and 2014). Maybe they didn't get to keep it because they won it as West Germany in 74 and 90 and Germany 2014

 

I had a quick read on Wikipedia earlier, it says that it was Jules Rimet's wish that the first country to win it 3 times would keep it, FIFA will not do the same with the current trophy.

Taking Junior and Richarlison off has made Brazil weaker imo. Those 2 can win games at any point in a tight game just like Neymar can who has stayed on.
