The landlady caught me eyeing them up and began her spiel that they were just "...traditional toys...", unprompted may I add. I merely, diplomatically, replied that it was a public house but her home (something I picked up from the beloved 'Mo', landlady of my local in Canterbury talking about the state of people she would let in to her lock-ins) so she could decorate it however she so wished - this caused some offence to some of the place's denizens - so we finished our drinks and left. The Police do appear to have scored an own goal by going in with so many officers. But the fault here lies squarely with the idiotic owners, who have been asked repeatedly to put their racist dollies away. The usual suspects are out in force, claiming that honest white folk are being slandered as racists. But what a hill to die on, the right to publicly display racist stereotypes. Much has been made of the patronising attitudes of the middle classes since Brexit. Often with reason. But until certain sections of the white working class give up this hostility to other working class people, it isn’t going to get better any time soon.
There's been a succession of Tory Home Secretaries who've tried to make a thing out of being tough on the police or wanting to give the appearance of giving them their marching orders / reading them the riot act. It's just fodder for their hard of thinking of base. In reality the Home Secretary of the day has absolutely no operational oversight over any police force in the country and can no more tell Essex Police what to do than I or you can. As soon as I read about this I hoped Essex would respond and while they might have been more assertive, I guess in the absence of any actual contact from Sue-Ellen or her lackies they probably pitched it right.
I remember having a Golliwog when I was very young and one day I noticed it had just vanished. I looked high and low for it, but I never found out what happened to it. I assume my parents made it disappear when the country starting leaning towards them being inappropriate.

It's all about intent. I would hope that if a person is on the record supporting lynchings (sounds pretty absurd that they might, and a clear influence from US politics, where they actually had lynchings) that the authorities would deal with it appropriately. I am almost tempted to find out what you are talking about, but suspect there will be some tortuous extrapolation of something that was half said. Or, they're righties, and all righties love a lynching, therefore... If there is an actual reference to lynching, lock em up, I'm on your side. If not, no surprise. Edit: Just saw the image. OK. Hanging the things up like that does not represent an issue in my opinion (as distateful as it is), but I would have thought that the comment in the tweet makes an explicit link to some pretty unfortunate racism. Taking them down and some sort of prosecution would seem an obvious and justifiable move. However, I don't think that would make golly displays unlawful on the whole. But when you have them associated with a knowing understanding that you are representing a disgusting racist act, it is a different matter.

Trying to deflect that fact by pointing at the occasional genuine right wing racists (aging land lords with unpleasant views regarding lynching and gollies), whilst modern day lefties demand that we pigeon hole each different race, creed and every other physical characteristic that may be used to describe a person, in order to set us against each other to further their ideological goals. I think it is the word "wog" meaning without Government much like " wo.p" meaning without papers . TBH these are words that should not be used However limey and rosbeef do not offend .
