Talking Tactics on Twitter, who I find is very ITK on Aston Villa matters and initially confirmed our interest in Wesley has confirmed that he is now going elsewhere. I wonder given the timing if the sale of Sarr has meant we can now go for more ambitious targets.
Can't see it personally. We know a big chunk of the Sarr money is heading straight to Rennes by the end of August. And unless Marseille have bunged us the whole lot up front we'd have to borrow against the balance to be able to spend it this summer, which would likely put the 'debt free by next summer' thing under pressure.
Bit gutted about this, thought he'd suit us very well. Now left needing two forwards in a relatively short amount of time with not a lot of money.
But we would have had to pay that amount anyway? It’s not like the sale has triggered a new obligation. We made a big sale at an ok price that we weren’t sure we’d be able to make. Think Wesley is a bit crap and we can do better, so hopefully we will. We’ve now realised far more money in sales than any side in the division other than Leicester (though imagine Southampton will surpass our amount shortly, and possibly Leeds too).
Well, we won't be signing this specific awful, non-goalscorer striker, but I'm sure the next one will be along shortly.
It's only educated guesswork but I assume we always intended to sell Sarr this summer as otherwise we'd have had no way to cover the final Rennes payment next month without borrowing more. Duxbury pretty much confirmed he was off at the parlaci I think I read. We still owe money to others clubs too for past transfers and I bet whatever money we got up front for Pedro has already gone out the door. Agree though we just need to wait and see. I tend to think Jumbo's right - if Wesley's not going through it's because he's too rich for us.
Maybe Bayo isn't going after all, or perhaps it was always going to be one of Wesley and Nicolaescu? I know Levante fans had good things to say about Wesley, but I won't be toooo disappointed about it considering his scoring record (and considering Healey should still be first choice)
Ah but borrowing against revenue doesn’t get counted as debt by Duxbury. He’s got a magic wand that makes it “football BAU”.
You jest but he kind of fits the profile and at least scored some goals last year. Not saying I would want him but would not be surprised
I believe he got 20 goals one season for Cardiff. Not the youngest but he works so hard for the team and would prefer him over any we have now or are being linked to.
It does feel like the season largely hangs on the striker options, so need to bring in an experienced striker like Moore or a quality younger striker who can quickly step up otherwise we will be in a relegation fight
I wonder if this is why the Wesley deal is off? Supposedly Moore was our number 1 target. Now that he’s become available, I wonder if we’ve pulled the plug on Wesley and are submitting a bid or perhaps we already have.
