Sturgeon: Next Unpopulist, Authoritarian, Nationalist-socialist Leader To Fall Don't blame me. Moose started it. I'd rather it be left to the electorate myself, but even though she is as mad as a bag of wasps and rotting apples, she was an effective leader, who, like Blair, got drunk on power. I'd be happy if she was next to me in the trenches, provided we were on the same side. It is a shame she was a rabidly bitter, English hating terrier. She could have been great. Pity how it turned out. Edit: Mods, happy for you to merge this...
I am not sure how effective Nicola Sturgeon was in governing Scotland - there seems to be quite a mix of good and bad results. The one thing she did though was keep independence at the forefront of Scottish minds. I wonder how the change will affect the SNP's future. Humza Yousaf appears a very low key character and not the kind of charismatic leader the SNP has been used to. I guess time will tell but I suspect independence will be seen as further off.
I think the next election will be absolutely crucial for the SNP and the chances of Scottish independence. If Labour makes inroads in Scotland, at the SNP's expense, then SNP's "mandate" will be diminished. The data suggests it is still something that splits Scotland down the middle so a poor showing (by their standards) by the SNP will, imho, end any chance of another vote for 5-10 years. https://whatscotlandthinks.org/ques...tish-independence-referendum-if-held-now-ask/
For me Sturgeon was a great proponent and talisman for independance, a great party leader and master of electioneering, but a god awful leader of the country. Whether this was by design to promote independance, or through sheer negligence or incompetance I don't know. Quoted somewhere, the crowning achievement of her leadership was provision of baby boxes a scheme that gave circa £9M pa of taxpayers money to every new born regardless of need. Yet she failed to get a handle on drugs, crime, healthcare and education and blamed the English for her failings despite the per person premium the Scots recive in taxation. There's also some dodgy stuff going on about funding and for someone that had "plenty in the tank" a month or two before quitting something doesn't smell right to me. I wish Humza well, I hope he puts independence on the back foot for a year or two whilst he starts to sort some of the mess out and then he puts together a realistic and well though out plan. One thing Brexit has told us is that it isn't simple and if it isn't well planned for it will likely be problematic. Scotland deserves better than it has had.
Good summary. Yes I wish him well too and agree maybe his priority should be domestic affairs to build confidence in the SNP to govern well. I am sure independence will come eventually but it cannot be used to hide other things that need doing. Labour are likely to develop into a more effective opposition than they have been for quite a while
The husband of former first minister Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested in connection with an investigation into Scottish National Party finances. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-651878 Seems a big step and unlikely unless there was something solid to go on. Obviously innocent auntil proven guilty etc.
Reports that Sturgeon was informed of the Police raid on her house and whisked away 20 mins before they turned up. Fishey.
Nationalist Socialist deposed and now facing arrest apparently. Nuremburg next perhaps? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.in...sturgeon-snp-police-arrests-b2322564.html?amp If anyone wants to know what you lot are most concerned about, they just have to look at what you are not talking about.
All gone very quiet on the SNP in the mainstream media. Plenty of conspiracy theorists and social media commentry however. I wonder if this means formal charges are being brought and they've been told to keep quiet.
Released without charge. Nevertheless great news cos it'll mean 20 extra seats for Labour in Scotland, making it even harder for the Tories.
Wrong again. When are you going to get something right? She's a nationalist socialist, and clearly pointing that out disturbs you in some way.
I agree it makes it easier for Labour to form a government but both Labour and SNP always vote against the Tories so from a Tory perspective it makes little difference. Labour and SNP would form a coalition if it suited them
Losing to a coalition would be far better for the Tories than a large Labour majority. Opens the door for an easier route back to government, easier to divide the coalition parties on key issues, easier to push for a mid term election based on a lack of mandate for either party, possible to win the odd vote that isn't clear cut. Labour picking up extra seats helps them win a majority and govern. That's bad for the Tories.
This from Wikipedia… “However, others in the party were explicitly pro-Nazi. Hugh MacDiarmid, who stood as an SNP candidate in 1945, believed that the Nazis were "less dangerous than our own government" and wrote a poem about the London Blitz that included the line "I hardly care".[32][33][34] Arthur Donaldson, who went on to lead the party between 1961 and 1969, believed a Nazi invasion would benefit Scotland:[35]” Can’t speak for Nicola, but the implications of a party involved in both socialism and nationalism is one that I am not unique in making. indeed it appears to be one enthusiastically embraced by some, at least, of it members.
