These two last met in a World Cup back in 1966 when Argentina triumphed 2-0. Sabella would be quite pleased with a similar result. As it is Lionel Messi is the one making the headlines leading by example.

The rest of the team need to step up to the plate. di Maria has been a bit sloppy, Higuain lacks match fitness and sharpness although he is improving while Aguero is unlikely to feature again.

This may be a blessing in disguise given that Lavezzi provides more width and more coverage on his flank than an unfit Aguero has been able to provide. Mascherano has been excellent and Gago is also picking up with more game time although Perez could be a better bet to provide more energy and ability to defend and attack than Gago.

Zabaleta has been his usual self and Garay too while Rojo playing out of position has excelled. Even Romero. However Fernandez may be replaced given his inability to cover space and anticipate leaving large areas free. Sabella will also curse the lack of conversion from great service at set pieces and also needs to work on defending them.

Switzerland have also been less than stellar. They will no doubt rely on Shaqiri to pull something out of the bag and hit on the counter sitting deep akin to their tactics against Spain in 2010. Rodriguez and Lichtsteiner will be less adeventurous and Inler and Behrami will no doubt be tasked to double mark Messi.

The centre of the Swiss defence missing von Bergen is also soft and Benaglio has not been impressive so this may afford Argentina some chances if their first touch passing movements come off. Playing in Manaus may also have some effect on the Swiss as it has other sides and may afford Argentina a slight advantage as will the enormous numbers of fans expected to fill the Sao Paulo stadium.
