Respect is a word which has been hi-jacked by the young to mean something due to them, while they, on the other hand don't have to respect others unless they have done something particular to deserve it. Discuss! From Lynn Truss' 'Talk to the Hand' "..."deference" has become a dirty little demeaning word, while its close relative "respect" has become a cool street-crime buzz-word mainly associated with paying feudal obeissance to those in possession of firearms. Both words have lost their true meaning."
are you actually a old moody man afanof or is this just a big joke i understand the meaning of respect and i have never shown anyone respect for carry a fire arm or any weapon i think it is cowardly!
that last post was not ment to sound quite so serious the moody man was ment to have a after it apologies
It seems not, admin. No-one seems willing to debate abstract concepts. Oh well, back to Collins John! ???
Thank you ladies, reasonable as ever. If women ruled the world it would be a better place - no need to discuss that.
personally I wouldnt call it an abstract concept at all. Language changes all the time, which is partly why English is such a rich tapestry. If you told my grandfather someone was gay he would probably assume they are having a nice day. When I tell my grandchild someone is a shirtlifter he might assume he holds and occupation not yet devised. English is a vast, rambling conglomeration of words and phrases from a huge variety of times and places, and every word has its own unique and ever-changing history. Why be precious of the meaning of certain words like 'respect' but not care qbout the change in meaning of other words? Does it matter that the word respects meaning changes with context when the notion behind it is the same for those who truly command and display it?
Not at all. Thinking about the generational shifts in linguistic connotaions simply made for a nice change from playing curveball!
yep same here. Got psychology AS level when i get back to school, but i just cannot revise sooooooooo bored.
