Not sure why people are turning their nose up at Montero. In the right set up he could be an outstanding signing.
Come on - ask yourself - when has Gino shown anything other than being a shrewd cool dude - £10m for Montero - absolutely no way he did that!
On his day he's one hell of a player. Absolutely ripped Ivanovic a new one on opening day, schooled him all night! I guess like any winger, when he's 'not at it', he stinks the place out. Standard for most wingers. One thing is for certain, we need pace, desperately. With Amrabat and hopefully Montero, we have a different dimension which can stretch teams and allow Ighalo and Deeney more space to operate in. If you watch the opposition against us, they commit so many players into a central position to combat our 'narrow' play due to having no natural width to worry about. At least now teams won't be able to do this as they'll have potentially two rapid wingers to defend against. I would be happy with this signing. He's definitely not the finished article as his final ball does need some work, but if anyone can coach him it's QSF.
Sod it, it's not my money and it's a drop in the ocean if we stay up. It's not even that out of the ordinary in today's market, when you look at what Bournemouth are paying. People massively underestimate just how much Premier League players cost. It's why some on here were absolutely certain that Berghuis would be straight into the first team once fit because 'Gino wouldn't pay 5m for a squad player'. Montero is rapid, and if QSF can get him playing then he'll routinely scare the **** out of opposition players. Plus, from what I've seen, his end product isn't nearly as bad as some people think. He's not a player to expertly plant a cross on a 50p, but if he could he wouldn't be leaving for Watford, he'd be leaving for Man City. He can whip good balls into dangerous areas, and that's good enough for me. He's just the sort of player we need.
It's not my money either, but we shouldn't be too blasé. The Pozzos have a good handle on finances, but bad things can happen in football when you spend too much!
Exactly. I'm not proposing we start to pay dangerous fees and wages. Even if I was blasé, it wouldn't matter. If the Pozzo's plan to spend 10m on a winger, then I'm confident we have the money to do so without worrying about the club's future.
So after all the excitement of the past 48 hours of a bid for a premier league winger. We are no closer to signing the supposed target. No reports have been from any reliable sources outside of this guy on Twitter. Sky sports haven't picked up on it, nor the WO or WD. Hopefully this is still happening but I am very surprised that an offer of such substantial amount has been kept under the radar from the reliable media outlets. Would love to just see it pop up on the Watford site that we have signed Montero or Townsend without anyone knowing it was going on but I struggle to believe that will be the case.
It's ok, the reliable sources on here say we are working down a list. If they run out of names, they'll just start another list. At some point it'll get to T. Smith.
His name on the back of his shirt is 'Baby Jeff'. No thanks. Edit: sorry it used to say Baby Jeff. Still, no thanks.
I stumbled across this outside the Vic the other day. Evidence of a highly organised and extensive search.
In other dramatic news, Granny Doris and a random ITK twitter account are both claiming that we have made a world record bid to sign Jermaine Jenas. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of either, although Granny D referred to him as 'the babyfaced gaptooth one off that latenight football show' and then mumbled something incoherent about rubbish collection.
Swansea are in talks with Villa to sign Scott Sinclair according the Sky Sources, so I wonder if Montero will join us once the Sinclair deal for them goes through.
Your probably right, I'm just clutching at straws because I desperately want us to sign a winger. I know the WD are saying that our No.1 target is Townsend followed by Montero then Philips but I just think Montero will suit us best.
I don't - look at how good Capoue and Gomes have been for us, and Townsend is similarly rated by Spurs fans, if not more highly, as well as still being only 24 with his best years likely ahead of him.
True but I just prefer the qualities of Montero more. More of a team player and will track back. Townsend can very selfish in good areas where a pass would lead to a goal but instead he opts to go it alone. I've watched Townsend play many many times and whilst he had age on his side, my fear would be if he doesn't change to become more of a team player then we will be just as frustrated as the Spurs fans are with him. Both have great pace and both are direct, it's just what they do in the final third is slightly different. From watching Montero last season he would try to cross or pass, whereas all the times I've seen Townsend, he will most likely opt to shoot. Either way I would be happy if we got one of them, my preference is just Montero.
If I was trying to predict with confidence the match rating of Montero and Townsend, I'd say that Townsend is likely to score between a 5-8, whilst Montero is likely to score between a 3-9. So, on his best day, Montero could play for the best team in this league, but on his worst, wouldn't even be picked for a team threatened with relegation. Townsend would make it into the starting line-up of most midtable Premiership teams regardless. I guess it depends whether you want a consistent starter or an x factor player.
If it is a choice of someone who can't get on the bench for Spuds or on the pitch with Swans - i say keep the money in the bank / play Amrabat as a winger and sign a back up striker where there is perhaps a bit more choice and Sinclair
So reports are £2.5m for Sinclair, £7m for Phillips, £10m for Montero & £14M for Townsend. None of them have really set the prem alight but an £11m quid price spread! Seems utterly bonkers. I'd rather spend a couple of million on Kacaniklic.
Worth bearing in mind that neither Capoue nor Gomes got on the bench for Spuds. A player's ability to be a starter at his club shouldn't be the standard by which his worth is judged (and I say that as someone who isn't convinced by Townsend).
Yes but one cost nowt and the other was clearly below his market Value - £14m for Townsend is all the money and some more
It's serious dosh. Our turnover was about £18m last year iirc (correct me if wrong). Sure we will make bazillions from the Prem, but it's worth keeping perspective as we are also spending bazillions. if we were relegated this season or next we could still be paying for him and his wages on a much reduced turnover years down the line, on Championship cash. As part of the Pozzo empire it's not so frightening, but it's like people with their huge mortgages at current house prices - it's still real money. £14m is also not so much the Pozzo model either - could he ever be sold on for more? Makes me think they will have to cash in on someone at some point.
totally agree Moose , wasnt that far back when we were minutes from administration ! I dont want to ever go through times like that again!
