He’d be over one hundred and ten years old now. That as was 40 years ago and the old buffer looked at least 70 then.

So pushing up the daisies is my guess.

The actor that played him died in 2001 at the age of 95, so you're basically correct on all counts. :)

I get why an apple falls from a tree, but how does gravity pull and keep "air" close to the planet ?

Because atmosphere is an element, gravity is a force. A force cannot effect an element of this nature so gravity has no say on how the atmosphere is distributed across the earth. Put simply, you can pick up and apple, throw it up in the air and watch it fall to the ground. You cannot see or touch atmosphere, the only part of it we can "see" is the wind, which is just the speed which certain air streams move.

So if gravity can’t exert a force on an element of this nature why doesn’t air just drift away? What happens at the very edge of our atmosphere ? Is there a narrow boundary between “atmosphere” and “space” or is it broad and gradual ?

Air is matter, anything with mass can be affected by gravity (I won't go into space-time curvature and light here), the force of gravity holds the atmosphere to the earth and only other forces can remove it. The earth is able to hold on to its atmosphere because the magnetic field deflects solar wind. Mars once used to have a thick atmosphere but once its core solidified the magnetic field ceased to be, then over hundreds of millions of years solar wind has slowly stripped the atmosphere.

The earth does lose some atmosphere, high energy light molecules of hydrogen or helium mostly but it also gains some back when free molecules in space enter the upper atmosphere too.

In some shops it's like that but by in large the bookies are spending money on them. There are approximately 8000 betting shops in the UK, it's slightly below the maximum of about 10k before the credit crunch in 2008.
The projects I work on for UK, Ireland and Sri Lanka are based solely on getting more content into shops, for my European clients it's more kiosk based.
Look at any high street these days, it's dying, look at how many general shopping stores, they are the minority.

    I'm afraid this isn't correct.

The atmosphere is composed of gases, and gases are subject to gravity just like everything else.

Gravity is (almost) wholly responsible for keeping the Earth's atmosphere in place.

¡English ought to adopt the ¿ and ¡ symbols at the start of written sentences and do away with those at the end.

A punctuation mark at the start of a sentence makes much more sense when you're reading. ¿Doesn't it.

You know the question or exclamation is following. ¡Useful. ¿What does it serve to know at the end. ¡It's no use now. ¡I've already read it.

A few weeks ago, my sister and I went to Chichester to do some Christmas shopping and found £50 in cash on the pavement. It was by a cash machine and also close to a betting shop so we figured someone had just walked away from one of them, gone to put the money in their pocket and missed. We stood in that spot for about 20 minutes waiting for someone to return, looking for their missing money, but they never did. We then had an ethical dilemma of what to do with the money - we even wondered at one point if we were on some kind of candid camera as the situation was so bizarre. We’ll never know if it was the cash machine or the betting shop that person had just walked away from but, if it was the latter, I should think they wish now they had bet online…

Strictly speaking, keeping money you find on the street amounts to theft.

I find it strange that only Spanish adopted these punctuation symbols. Talking of punctuation, the interrobang was suggested as a new one in the 1960s, it never took off, but it looks like a superimposed question mark and exclamation mark to denote a rhetorical question or a question asked in disbelief. The person who suggested it also included an inverted interrobang for Spanish.
