American pitbulls are in fact already illegal here, you are not allowed to buy one now but if you have one they HAVE to be muzzled when you take them out and the slightest sniff of them biting someone they are put to sleep!! The idea behind the states banning them also is that are born and bred fighting dogs.. created by man, not a natural breed and they have also had the same problem as we have recently seen in liverpool. It is widely believed, though not a certainty, that they were first created to fight each other as a sport after bull-baiting was outlawed here in the late 1800's they are in fact an offshoot of the bull mastiff. The first throws of the APBT were as a cross breed between bull baiters (Mastiffs) and terriers (English bull terriers) Once the sport of dog fighting was finally banned pretty much worldwide the american pitbull was now a breed of its own. An APBT can make a good pet, but they have to be treated with respect from an early age and not under any circumstances have any form of violence shown against them as it can cause them to "Turn" and once one tastes blood then it can be a very sad slippery slope because unfortunately the natural inbred nastiness comes to the fore (this is what is reported in the media but not proven). It is very possible to have one from a pup until a natural death with no problems and quite often that is the case with them, but the problem of them turning is a very real one and therefore they are trying to outlaw them all together. I personally think it is wrong, i know someone who had an APBT and he was one of the nicest dogs i have met, very playful and not a viscious bone in his body.
I am a serious dog lover and i especially like bull dogs, the only ones better are Siberian Huskies I dont agree with them banning them here as like i said they can make very good pets if they are treated right, but the same can be said for all dogs, though the APBT are more volatile than most. When my friend owned one we spent a lot of time looking into it for him when the laws changed and APBT were banned in this country.
