Interesting debate about the LGBTQ+ meaning. As @UEA_Hornet pointed out, the "+" means exactly that - it's all the other dozens of terms people use to describe their sexuality/gender. It is such a wide scope nowadays that just adding the addition symbol makes more sense for readability I guess.

Personally falling into the 'B' category myself, I feel the 'Q' is an outdated term now. You are either Male or Female but whether you are interested in the opposite sex, same sex or both should not in my view, have it's own label. You could also throw the term "Gay" into the same hat. I've had girlfriends and boyfriends - but never considered myself as 'Gay', I am 'Bi' for this reason. If a male or female pronounce themselves to be attracted to the same gender only, they are either Gay or Lesbian. It is alright, again in my view, to use the word 'Gay' in describing two males who are in love with each other, as it's the common terminology. Using 'Gay' as an umbrella statement for everyone who falls into the LGBTQ+ stigma should be removed I feel.

This story has made me aware of a fine piece of nominative determinism, the BBC’s ‘Showbiz Correspondent’ is called Katie Razzall.

Sounds like she should be in a magazine you might have found in hedgerows in the 80s and 90s.

Does '+' also cover those who describe their sexuality/gender as 'heterosexual/male'?

  18. Moose

That would be weird. It would mean everyone but heterosexual women.

It’s probably not a club you or I can belong to, but the consolation is that we can still be allies.

I am not totally versed on the subject, but I would say no. That ideally has a class of "Straight" - which in turn may or may not have it's own sub-categories associated with such a label. Personally, I accept people for who they are, regardless of gender, colour or sexual identity. :)

This is aimed at no one in particular and I say it as someone who probably hasn’t quite kept up with all of the terminology and categories, but if people put as much time into reading about the subject as they do claiming to not get it or mocking it, then it would probably clear things up quite quickly.

I absolutely ******* despise the word ‘woke’ but I get why it has become pejorative. It’s never nice to feel preached to and social media can distort things terrible but I generally find that if you’re willing to meet someone half way then that’s enough for them.

That's very true although, as the Q point demonstrates, to some extent it depends where you go to read up on something and/or the agenda of the person delivering it as to what some of these things mean.

Best way to be. I've never understood why people seem so intent on being defined by their sexuality - whatever it might be - that they feel the need to form themselves into groups. Really, no-one cares who's shagging who.

    Very true.

It’s part of the complete fracture between our real selves and our online selves. I’ve never met a person who is LGBT that expected anything more of me other than what is normal in polite society. In real life you can make jokes at a friend’s expense, get things wrong, ask stupid questions about their sexuality etc. Sadly the same isn’t true online.

It’s vaguely related but I had an interesting argument with my dad the other week. He was deeply baffled and a little amused that he’d had an email regarding his work from a sender who signed off with his preferred pronoun and my dad hadn’t come across that before.

He told me about expecting me to find it funny and daft like he did but instead I asked him what he stood to lose if people want to do that.

Eventually he accused me of being woke. Whatever, it’s a handy catch all to discredit the other side of the argument. It’s frustrating because my generation, ‘millennials’ if you like, is constantly being told that we have it easy, we’re lazy and entitled and we don’t appreciate the value of anything but as soon as you voice an opinion on something you’re being woke or a snowflake or a crybaby.

Nevertheless, I would guess that 90%+ of what is written about transgender is started by those who oppose something about it. The media has been relentless on it these last few weeks. Politicians being constantly asked questions about women and penises.

Answer why that is and you are a long way towards understanding why it appears to always be assaulting your ears (the topic, not penises that is).

Said it before and I'll say it again: the only thing more irritating than the woke brigade are the anti-woke brigade.

Even today there are plenty examples of violence being employed against people for their sexual preferences.

Things are undoubtedly much better than they used to be. For most (western) societies I do think it's a minority who are e.g. truly homophobic now, compared to years gone by. That minority still exists though (and it's larger in some countries than others).

It's worth bearing in mind that it's only 70 years since we forced national hero Alan Turing to be chemically castrated simply for being gay. That's really not very long ago when you think about it.

Very true. It's awful that he was treated that way. I think of him as one of the reasons we are able to use a computer (because he was part of it) - Turing, Babbage, Hopper and Lovelace(Byron). Influential people who changed the world since the seventeenth century. Prejudice was rife in that era too - it seems' humanity never looked forward past issues in our time of life either. Shame.

    Good.

If any of us assaulted a colleague for saying something we didn't like, we'd be sacked. Smith handled it like a 13 year old and clearly the legacy of his deep seated cuckholdry and his mentally abusive wife played a role.

He needs help but his actions can't be brushed under the carpet. Rock's joke was or wasn't ever the line, but you can't react to bad roasts by violence. Especially not at one of the most globally viewed entertainment events of the year.

Smith created Oscar's history for all the wrong reasons and his defenders are enabling a practice of violence being the answer to disagreeing with someone.
