Another good race despite the treacherous conditions. Taylor-Brown so unlucky to get a flat when in the leading group as it would have been a real head-to-head duel for the final run. All bodes well for the Relay on Saturday.

I know Fiji are almost unplayable at times but there were unforced errors in the first GB attacks which effectively ended the contest after a couple of mins. Their confidence is probably now completely shot. Very disappointing.

Will any BBC reporter ever be able to avoid the "How are you feeling?", "Can you put into words your feelings/emotions when you won/lost/forgot the gold medal/contest/your sanity?" in asking the same old Sally Gunnell-esque crash-course/car-crash tired cliched questions.

  4. Yep. Should be asking "do you think climate change affected the race"? and "do you think we should we return to the gold standard"? instead.

A great 1-2 in the pool for GB.

    First time since 1908!

We’re on a football forum, and to their credit, no competitor has yet answered “I gave it 110 per cent” ;)

Does nobody in Taekwondo ever just aim to get into a comfortable lead and see a match out? It seems like every match involving GB fighters ends up going down to the last second.

Same reason so many football knockout stage games go to penalties. Everyone is good and on form by then.

That’s true, but it’s amusing that the commentators are taking the plucky youngster line.

He was second favourite for the event and once the actual favourite crashed out in the first lap, the one to beat. He signed last year to the richest World Tour team with the precise goal of winning the Tour De France, so they don’t need to whisper it, just enjoy his ability.

TV likes a tearful champion. Interviewers are trying to precipitate the gush.

The whole shebang seems to need to justify itself by being ‘amazing’ and life-affirming and the best thing evah that any alien visitors to Earth would immediately identify as the best thing evah. Which sometimes it is.

Just seen it, you could not get any closer than that. It just seems like if you’re winning with a few seconds to go it’s almost impossible to be defensive as your opponent will just come at you. Attack probably needs to be the best from of defence, but I guess it’s counter intuitive under the circumstances.

Even worse is something you hear in football (but not only football) all the time: "Just how disappointed are you to have lost that semi-final?"

"About 15% less disappointed than when my girlfriend dumped me, but 24% more disappointed than when my car got scratched at the supermarket."

Well, that's was the proverbial game of 2 halves. Excellent 2nd half after a really poor 1st for GB.

  23. I understand that Taekwondo can go down to the last seconds. But so far, in 22 secs, I've seen us lose 4 and win 0. Do we ever win in the last second ourselves?

    This happened in 2015:
Great Briton! – Last Gasp Bianca Walkden Wins First World Title

Emotional Bianca Walkden described her final victory at the WTF World Championships in Russia tonight as “mind blowing.” The 23-year-old Manchester trained Liverpudlian heavyweight defeated veteran Gwladys Epangue 4-2 at +73kg to become Britain’s first world gold medalist since Sarah Stevenson in 2011.

All ‘Queen B’s’ points against France’s twice world gold medallist and triple European champion came in a dramatic last 10 seconds. Walkden, adding the world crown to last year’s Euro success, had an appeal for a face shot rejected and trailed her 31-year-old rival 2-0 as the clock ticked down. However, a lapse of concentration allowed Walkden to whip in a three point head shot followed by the award of a penalty point to complete a sensational triumph. Momentarily, the stunned new champion didn’t know she’d won before setting off on a victory lap of the mat and lifting coach Paul Green off his feet in Chelyabinsk’s Traktor Ice Arena. Victory was particularly sweet for the popular fighter, overcoming two serious knee injuries in the last four years to climb to the top of the podium.

Brief highlights can be seen at the beginning of this video:

Superb relay gold in the 4x200 freestyle.

Close for the first 2 legs but really pulled away after that almost breaking the world record!

    Excellent performance!

On the other had a disappointing day in the rowing - just one silver with 3 boats coming 4 - including one being pipped by Ireland for 3rd.

The four crews are supposed to be the cream of British rowing. The women effed up during the week and had to qualify from the reparcharge and a crap lane draw. Hats off to the Irish rowers. There is a world of difference in their levels of funding and they raised their game. A trully embarassing performance from GB.

The men's four, WTF, with that ramming attempt in the closing stages. A monumental eff-up.

Then from the ridiculous to the sublime, the mens quad skulls. No previous medals, no real history in the event, complete outsiders. However, showing b@lls and really going for it, they put so much pressure on the favoured Italians in the next lane. There was a great shot in the third quarter where you could see the bows of both boats and the Italian bow charging forward and then completely disappearing from the picture as they caught a massive crab (mis-stroke) which almost toppled them over in the water. The GB crew held their form under tight pressure from the other crews to win a fantastic silver.

You should have got flavoured ones. Japanese cherry-blossom would be most appropriate.

I used to share an office with a bloke who was married to a Japanese woman. The weird flavoured Kit-Kats he used to bring from Japan were interesting e.g. Blueberry cheesecake. His wife always used to remove the cherry-blossom flavoured ones (Kit-Kats that is).
