Haha I remember a few posters said Boothroyd would be future England manager when he was doing welll with us, would be funny if they were right

International manager is a totally different role to club manager, club management credentials are barely relevant. England need International experience, so I would go for someone like Klinsmann.

Otherwise, I would promote from within the FA structure, so Aidy Boothroyd.

Sorry, I meant with a caretaker up to the start of next season so he could fulfil his contract.

  4. Give it to Boris Johnson for a laugh

Put a camera on him the whole game and watch his antics as he demonstrates how to tackle the linesman and twick twack the football

Keith Chegwin is pro-Brexit, so he should be more than suited to taking England out of major competitions.

We would never get into Europe with Boris in charge...

Does anyone care about the England national team anymore?

Every England manager apart from Alf Ramsey has had their reputation tarnished or even ruined by being in the job. The media love to lambast the England manager historically, while overrating the talent of the English national team. Even Alf Ramsey was a failure in the 1968 Euro's, 1970 World Cup ( I mean he took off Bobby Charlton when we were winning) and then failed to qualify for the 1974 world cup when they failed to beat Poland with a 'clown' in goal.

The point is Sam should have realised he was almost certainly going to be a failure in a footballing sense anyway as soon as he took the job. Now the next England manager better have every conversation he has in private or public scripted for him. I think Sam did deserve to go but why was their a stitch up in the first place?

As for wanting the likes of Deeney to be in the England squad if you support Watford then I say forget it. I dont think hes good enough for the England team and even if he was to appear for England for a couple of games in a tournament before we are inevitably knocked out then so what?

    PLEASE.

There are literally no good English candidates, and the idea that the manager must be an Englishman is not only ******ed and with no basis in reason, it has already been broken as a policy more than once.

Appointing any of the English candidates, except for Howe, who will never ever take the job as this moment in time, would be the FA tacitly admitting that they have no clear direction for the national team to go in, and no interest in the idea of introducing a philosophy to the setup for the purpose of actually effecting change of the hideous mentality and tactical issues that we have very, very clearly suffered from for at least the last 20 years. It would be saying that, as long as we keep qualifying for tournaments, they don't really care what happens, and they can't be bothered to work hard enough to play their part in any attempt to perform at a higher level than that.

Rangnick took Hoffenheim to the Bundesliga, and in their first season actually managed them to being name 'Autumn Champions'. He just got RB Leipzig promoted to the Bundesliga as well, so he's got a track record of working with somewhat limited players. I have literally not heard a better candidate suggested, except for (possibly and debateably) the pipe dream of Wenger, and I have heard many worse, including the travesty that would be Brucie.

    Why not?

Limited players?! RB Leipzig spent more last summer than every other team in the league combined and are currently unbeaten in 5 Bundesliga games... Hoffenheim were/are pretty damn rich as well. Taking nothing away from Rangnick though, incredible coach and manager but I doubt we'd be able to tempt him away from his fantastic position at RB.

But he didn't benefit from that money spent, because he's not the coach anymore, and to be fair, yes they spent that money, but it was still on players who fit their policy of being under 24 and hot prospects. I was referring more to Hoffenheim, but in terms of RasenBallsport themselves they're still competing against teams like Dortmund and Bayern, whose players are undoubtedly 'better' as it stands.

Much as the England job often proves a poisoned chalice, it might still be a big enough opportunity for him not to turn down, especially if he was lobbying for it previously.

The spent more than the rest of the league combined was summer 2015, when he was coach. And Hoffenheim are minted, they've done the same as Leipzig, they only had an attendance of 300 fans 10 years ago!

Kyle walker is one of our few decent players so we don't need to sign a rb from Germany

Ok, sure, that's all fair and I'm aware of Hoffenheim's story, but either way, we can't say that either of them did or do have players of the same calibre of Bayern or Dortmund, or perhaps even several of the other bigger teams that they are competing with in the bundesliga.

When Wembley was being rebuilt, England rotated venues for all home games. Why not rotate England managers on a match-by-match basis? And why limit the gig to 'football people'? BY all means let Southgate do the Malta game, then give it to, say, Julian Clary, for a match, then try David Dimbleby, and so on. You could even auction the role for a worthy cause for one match only. Time for some radical thinking at the FA and this is the perfect solution

We should go the whole hog and give it to Arry because let's face it, we can't be made to look any more ridiculous than we do now.

Southgate to continue with Rooney as captain then. Why bother with any of it?

Last time around I was keen on Howe getting the job,I remain in his corner if we are to stay English.Whats the harm in giving a young manager who plays attacking style football the choice of the countries best talent to choose from. From my point of view watching England over the last few campaigns has been painful. However, I doubt he will get it or take it if offered as he probably has a big club in mind for the future and England when he is 60 plus!
If not then I guess we should go for the usual has been or a foreigner again and sit back and suffer more defensive tripe.

Was Southgate ever going to rock the boat and remove the FA's main man of the main job? Of course not. He wants the £3m a year part time Yes Man role permanently.

The squad will be virtually the same as our sensational performance over Slovakia or whatever with Rashford in for Kane.

We should just go the whole hog and replace the Manager's job with the board of FA directors. Appointing someone who isn't a yes-man only creates an obstacle for them.

What we need is some sort of cross between pro-celebrity golf and big brother: after every match to public vote to decide whether the present incumbent can carry on with the job or suggest their replacement. Mel & Sue and Mary Berry are free (and cheap). And Sooty and Sweep are returning to our screens they could do with the exposure.

  26. Oscar calling

Mary Berry gets £600k for 11, 1 hour episodes. Not exactly cheap in terms of hourly rate!

  27. Lloyd

The FA must pay the going rate to attract the best talent and at that price Mary would represent excellent value as England manager for one match only. Delighted that this idea is gathering traction. I'll write to the FA with a detailed proposal first thing in the morning

That's 11 hours which equates to 7 * 90 mins with 30 minutes in total for extra time this seems like a bargain.

"Squeak, squeak, squeak!" What's that Sweep you want 10% of the player's appearance fees paid into a Swiss bank account? Oh FFS we're back to square one.

Impressive start by Southgate. I'm starting to believe that England could be contenders for the world cup, after making Malta look like a Championship side tonight.

    Very proud of our boys!

Disagree. Think we`re just punching above our weight right now. I expected us to raise our game against Malta (which was always a freebie game anyway). Let`s see if we can do it regularly against the teams around us first before we start to dream of winning a game in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Looks like we're going to hold out for an away point here. Really feel like we're developing a solid Base for winning tournaments.
