I think the only excuse for looking at pictures of yourself on the Sao Paulo mass transit system is if they are nudies and you get a kick out of strangers accidentally getting a glimpse of your caralho.

That it's impossible to find competitive football in this country that doesn't descend into fights and kicking lumps out of each other. 5 a side, 6 a side and 11 a side all equally rubbish for a friendly game without getting kicked, called a ******* **** or someone squaring up to you every 10 minutes.

Also, that every job description wants someone who's "outgoing". It's just completely meaningless, a quiet introverted person is just as suitable for 99% of jobs as a loud extrovert and perhaps more suitable for a few. All it really achieves is making me self conscious for interviews and because every bloody advert says it I have no choice but to apply for roles knowing i'm not what they're looking for.

Disagree with this, to be totally honest. Unless there is no interaction with other employees required, having an outgoing personality may make you an easier person to approach and to work with. That's not saying an introverted person would be less capable to fulfil the job, but they may not be as valuable team member as someone whose personality cheers others up and boosts morale. Personally, I'd feel more comfortable working with someone I got along with and could have a laugh with, compared to someone who I didn't think wanted to talk to me.

Not that my opinion matters, in a thread discussing what bothers individuals!

People totally misunderstand the word introvert to mean 'quiet and bookish'. That's not it at all. I read an excellent book called Quiet, it explains the misconceptions about introverts and that introversion is about needing less stimulation. For example an extrovert and an introvert could be both as loud and outgoing as each other, but an introvert will need some time alone as well, whereas an extrovert would always crave the stimulation of social situations.

I would consider myself a textbook introvert, but if you met me i'd come across loud and outgoing. I like talking to people and having a laugh... Just not all the time!

I agree with this. I am also an introvert.

I think a lot of people that would describe theme selves as "outgoing", or an "extrovert" or as the "life and soul of the party" are often covering up their own insecurities and/or need the company of others to give themselves a boost.

Introverts can recharge their batteries by occupying themselves sometimes, and do not need to seek the attention, like the former.

 

This is spot on. I thought Quiet was really good as well, the sections on productivity and open plan offices were particularly interesting.

 

Indeed I haven't read through all of it so far, but i've found it very reassuring and it explained a lot about myself! I'd recommend it to anyone who thinks they might be introverted.

 

Fair point, but if you ignore the use of the word introverted (which I used in response to RunkleHorn's use of it), I think my point still stands - probably more so, given the acknowledgement that you can be both outgoing and introverted.

 

I didn't completely understand the point you made in your post (not being belittling, i'm probably just being slow). If your saying that an extrovert may be a better fit in some roles and some teams, then I completely agree. Most introverts would be crap at certain jobs that required constant socializing with no time to gather their thoughts. The point I was making is that introversion now has a stigma that it is in some way inferior and therefore the majority of roles are advertised using phrases such as "outgoing" even if it's not remotely relevant, so it has become meaningless through repetition.

Looking at your post a lot of the positive qualities you attribute to extroverts could also be seen as negative in a different environment, so there's no right or wrong answer.

That's again referring to people as extroverted or introverted, which was what I thought we were trying to get away with.

In terms of having an outgoing personality, which your original post was about, I'm struggling to think of a job in which someone lacking this would be preferential unless, as I mentioned, there was no need to interact with other employees which I doubt is the case for many roles. Whilst it may not be particularly encouraging to those considering applying for roles, I don't think it's an unreasonable ideal for the employer.

To be honest it's just HR *******s because they need to fill up space to make it look like they're doing something worth a salary. Nobody is going to hire somebody who just writes "non-Canuts with a strong quantitative degree" or whatever because management can just do that themselves. Over time you will realise that the personality sections of job descriptions are worthless and all that is cared about is qualifications and later on experience.

I don't play golf, then again there are a lot of different sports I don't play. However some sports like football and rugby, which I do watch, offer great sporting entertainment; other sports which I don't watch like ice hockey, basketball, etc one can see the attractiveness of those sports because they too offer great entertainment. But golf! Playing it I can understand, but standing in a field and watching golf has got to be one of the most boring and tedious things imaginable; it's not as if the entire course is visible from where you're standing - which unlike F1 where the drivers come around again.

 

So, Americans basically? Where Golf is concerned they just can't help themselves. It's when they shout that out following a tee shot on a par 5 that really boggles the mind.

The video below just highlights the point. Always the American fans, never anyone else. Occasionally quite amusing but usually just annoying. Funny how they wouldn't dare do stuff like this at The Masters!

It's incredibly difficult for the general public to get tickets for the masters therefore most of the morons are left out.

 

Good point. Probably for the best given Augusta Nat. take themselves way too seriously.

Was part of a camera crew there a few years back and they were ****s from the very start. Despite the blistering heat they did everything they could to be difficult, e.g prevented access to a buggy and insisted on arrival that we had to follow a strict chinos/shirt/shoes smart dress code for the whole crew or be kicked out. Plus other petty nonsense I won't go into, but safe to say none of which was mentioned in the numerous conversations prior to arriving. With a load of heavy kit on that course it was an absolute killer, made even more annoying as joe public walked past in his cap, flip flops and board shorts. Seems as long as they spend money and follow the draconian rules patrons can wear what they like. Not that I was bitter about it at all. :naughty:

But anyway, back on topic...people who go out of their way to make life unnecessarily difficult :dismay:

When commentators on pre-recorded football shows like MOTD give the impression that the commentary is live - and such is their phenomenal reading of the game that they're able to make astounding predictions just before a goal is scored. "The Man City fans are trying to counter the incessant Villa noise with a rendition of "Blue Moon", but Villa have a corner...are they about to be silenced...? THEY ARRRRRRRRRRRRE !!!! Benteke with a deft flick" etc.

They do the same thing for decisions/tackles etc that later become controversial thanks to manager's comments etc.
Also, "Could this be a turning point in the game?" ...Grrr, you're only saying that because you know it was!
