Injured striker Marlon King still feels he has a key role to play for Watford this term.

A knee injury brought a premature end to King's season, but manager Adrian Boothroyd ensured the 26-year-old remained close to the camp.

King walked onto the Vicarage Road pitch on crutches prior to Tuesday's defeat by Sheffield United, having giving a pre-game pep talk, and the forward is happy to be able to contribute.

"It was good of the manager to suggest that I spend time in the changing room and at the training ground while I am injured," King said.

"But that was always my plan. If I can't score any more goals this season at least I can do my bit off the pitch, trying to help in whatever way I can.

"Team bonding is massively important to us and we have a strong team ethic. The squad is very tightly-knit, and we all look out for each other and fight for one another.

"We do not have lots of superstar players like Chelsea or Manchester United, but the one thing people cannot break is our unity."

King is not expected to return until next season, but he has vowed to come back stronger than ever.

He added: "I am going to come back from this a stronger person and a better player.

"I will make those people who doubt me eat their words by giving everything I have to the team, and by scoring goals."

I like the poor headline pun "King to rally troops" - I wonder if all media sources have an emergency computerised pun generator, which can come up with a suitably weak pun for any eventuality?
