I was asked "what will we have to pay you for you to accept our offer" at a 2nd interview. Fortunately, I'd done my homework and gave a figure we were both happy with.

Also, in addition to all the other good points, first impressions are vital, so give a firm handshake and keep eye contact with the interviewer during the interview.

Finally got a response, a 2 sentence e-mail with a letter attached, with no reasoning just saying I was unsuccessful.

    Fantastic.

You could Email them back saying that's OK you've been offered a better position at (insert rival company's name here) ... won't help but at least you can imagine some kind of regret.

or you could send then an email saying something along the lines of 'thanks for letting me know and for giving me the opportunity. could you provide some feedback on my application so i can hopefully look forward to more success moving forward. also, thanks for your time and if you have any further questions about my application just let me know blah blah blahg

This is when you ask them for feedback, and make it very clear that you see your future in the industry and that specific role even. Stay polite, but basically you want to find out why you weren't the best candidate, so that next time you might have a bit of an edge.

Don't let it get to you. I'm sure you know that anyway but better said than left unsaid.

if you don't ask you don't get, asking costs nothing and you can ask ****loads of times before it becomes counter-active. 3 important lessons i've learned doing the things i do for as long as i have done them

Just applied for a very similar role at a smaller company! Wish me luck!

In the mean time check out my showreel for Live Event coverage (and book me for things!)

Got some feedback from the company the other day, they were impressed with how I spoke and my work and said I was one of the strongest editors and worked to an extremely high standard.

They went with someone who graduated in 2014 and had been working in a similar role for 12 months, saw on his linkedin that he'd done work experience and placements with the company before so not surprised they went with him. I have applied for his old job though which has come available!

Well done for impressing so much, but you were certainly up against it being up against someone who was almost an internal candidate. Best of luck with your next attempts, you'll be sorted soon.

This is an example of why the above advice is completely terrible.

Yeah he'd graduated at a Uni in the city and done work during his degree at the company, they said it was a tough decision which has made it less disheartening but annoying that they said they weren't sure I'd cope with the long hours and not many days off as I don't have full time experience of it, when I'm not going to get that experience unless I'm given the opportunity.

That is bad luck, but I suppose an understandable decision as recruiting can be expensive if they get it wrong. If they know he can do the hours you would have had to be better than him to get the job.

It goes back to a thread on here a while back. I said that as an employer then, all other things being equal, I would usually plump for someone that has some sort work experience, and almost certainly I would if it was in a similar role.

So unlucky, but the experience will improve your confidence and you'll be ok I am sure.

I think most posters have said it but chin up, It seems very unprofessional that you had to chase them for a reply, even if they dropped you an email saying they are still considering their option and thanking you for your patience but unfortunately that's the way it is. Would not give up hope, About 20 odd years ago I was down to the last 2 and the company said they would let me know, they did not, I called them, they said I was unsuccessful did not apogise the personel manager never took the call just passed the message onto the receptionist and just said "thanks for letting me know" two week later they called and offered me the job, I took it, they were a dreadful company that treated their staff and customers like dirt, lasted a year, hated every minute of it, resigned, started my own business and felt I learnt how to treat customers/staff from it, never keep them hanging on even if it is bad news, be honest and try not to hide behind a email or text always try and speak to them personally and offer some form of explanation even if it your balls up, the long term benefits will be there, may cost a few quid in the short term.

Good luck anyway and hopefully it is a blessing in disguise for you, don't take it personally or think it is your own fault, hopefully they will keep you on record and you never know. There is nothing wrong with supermarket work, I would much employ someone who has had some form of experience, even if it is not in the related industry, that's my opinion. Supermarket can have a great social side, or it did 25 years ago especially around christmas.

    How was your interview Don?

I have been invited to do a video interview for the TFL grad scheme. Never done one before and it's one of those one's where they give you a set of questions and then record your answers, you're not talking to people just a screen.

Any one done one of these before? Any tips? I have no idea what to expect/what kind of questions it'll ask.

Sounds like a dodgy porn shoot. You might be lucky, you might be unlucky depending on the other participants and which way you swing.

    Good luck.

Went well I think! Helped that the person interviewing me was from Watford and a Watford fan, really broke the ice.

Hear back soon hopefully. At Graduation this weekend found out a girl on my course had applied for the same job and didn't get an interview. Is it bad that I quite enjoyed that?

Just did my video interview and it was a horrible experience.

Because you're not talking to anyone, it's really hard not to just waffle on. You also only get 1 minute to think and then 1 minute to answer and you can't gauge if the interviewer is impressed or not... because there isn't one!

I also have a really boring voice, which in previous interviews i've been able to make a joke about with the interviewers but you can't really do that when you have a strict time limit on answers!

Highly doubt i'll get any further, but at least i've got experience in doing it now.

Sorry to hijack your thread - I have a second and final interview tomorrow for the Civil Service and just wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom, it's a meeting with the Director of an executive agency sponsored by the Cabinet Office. I've never got this far before as I've been fortunate enough to land good positions following internships or temp roles that have gone fixed term/permanent.

    Cheers

Just be yourself, be honest & relax. Don't diss previous employers or moan about anything. A second interview is simply to see if you'll fit in. polite conversation where possible before & after the interview "Nice office" etc sometimes helps you stand out.

I didn't get the job at the second interview unfortunately. Said that there was stiff competition.

    **** em.

Randomly got an e-mail from a woman in recruiting who had seen my CV online and I now have a phone interview to work as a Digital Media assistant at a company in a field I have never worked in before! Any tips for phone interviews?

the phone interview is probably the recruiter, who will be putting you forward for the face to face interview regardless of performance, so it really doesn´t matter

No the phone interview is with the manager of the company I've been given his number to ring

One thing which I learned very quickly when job hunting is that if it is being advertised by an agency on a job site you don't have to bother writing out a cover letter - if you really want to you can c+p a generic one in there, but they don't care and won't read it. They only want your CV.
